Shane Byrne's unexpected new career as he opens up about life after rugby

Former rugby player Shane Byrne has opened up about life away from retirement – as admitting he wishes he was still playing the sport. The Wicklow native professionally hung up his rugby boots in 2007, ending his career as one of the most capped Leinster players of all time and was regarded as one of most accurate line-out throwers in the world.
But life nowadays for Shane looks very different and the star now works for Bord na Mona. 'I'm in the waste management. It was a family business, and we sold sections of the business to Bord na Mona recycling and I'm now working for them.'
Asked if he missed playing on the pitch, Shane said: 'Oh god, yeah. How could you not. Look at what they are achieving now. I span a hell of a long time and when I started, Leinster was only getting going and there were only a couple of people in the stands. Now they are filling stadiums.'
He said success has driven the fans in their tens of thousands into stadiums. 'Munster started the drive in the late 90s and up to the noughties, they were the best team in Europe and we (Leinster) weren't achieving so that really got the momentum going and what Leinster did was they went right down to the grassroots and got kids into rugby.
'We need other provinces to catch up. They're just not quite there at the moment. And hopefully that will come about when you consider this the fourth sport in the country, what we're achieving is just fantastic.'
But his twin daughters, Alex and Kerry, are following in their dad's footsteps and Shane's girls play fullback and scrum half for Arklow Rugby Club. Last year, Shane beamed with pride as his daughter Kerry was named the Wicklow Rose at the Rose of Tralee.
'This was just all completely her, like we had nothing to do with it. No, we were informed, like a lot of things in her life, communication… she's 22,' he said laughing.
'She was brilliant, like, really, really impressive. They had an absolute ball. And the main thing is that she didn't win it, but she was happy with it, happy with the interviews and made lifelong friends like this. Again, they're picking the Kerry Rose, and they've gone down for the weekend for it.'
But the 53-year-old said Alex didn't express interest in entering the Rose of Tralee. 'No, she'd be the kind of girl that thinks about it, if we could just walk her into a room and tell her she has to do it. She'd be perfect, yeah, she'd be brilliant, but never say never. No other two twins have ever done it before,' he said.
In 2023, Shane signed up for a new challenge to help bridge the gap from rugby to retirement. He signed up to RTE's Dancing With The Stars and was partnered alongside pro dance partner Karen Byrne but was eliminated after orchestra week.
Speaking about his time on the show, he said: 'One of the things about it, that I suppose was the most revealing to me, was that the dancers and ourselves - those lives, would never cross. And they, like, all I can say about is they are true athletes in the true sense of the word.
'It was really impressive for me, like I really enjoyed the time. They'd be practicing the dance they have to do beforehand, and watching the interactions between each other, just a nod and a wink, and understanding very little talk, same as we used to do with the rugby league because we knew what we were doing. And watching them do that was, was I really enjoyed that end,' he added.

USA star Ilona Maher mulling move to WWE after Rugby World Cup

USA rugby player Ilona Maher is contemplating an offer to participate in WWE wrestling as a stepping stone to Hollywood after the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off on Friday in England. "I've been approached before by the WWE," she told the BBC, joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous'. "I should think about it, there is great money in it." Maher is the world's most followed rugby player with nearly nine million followers across Instagram and TikTok. She was also a contestant on 'Dancing with the Stars', posed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and was named best breakthrough athlete at this year's Espys, ESPN's annual award show. "I would love to get into the acting space and the scripted space. I think a Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson, John Cena progression - I would love to do that," Maher said. "It would be exciting to see my body type on the screen. I'll start off small, probably like a hot assassin or something, let's not get too crazy. I'm not going to be in a rom-com just yet. "We'll see. The world is open, but I do see myself coming back to rugby."

Boran and Kildare dreaming of staying afloat in Leinster

Monday evening in Carlow and Rian Boran finds himself on the same pitch facing the combined talents of TJ Reid, Chris Crummey and Lee Chin. It's all fun as the Kildare captain is taking part in the Hurling for Cancer Research charity game but in 2026 he'll lock horns with Leinster's best players for real. Tipperary may go down as the breakthrough hurling team of 2025, given their MacCarthy Cup triumph, but Boran and Kildare can't be far behind given their remarkable progress. It's only 18 months or so since they were navigating the Christy Ring Cup competition but now, after winning that and the Joe McDonagh Cup, they are preparing for life in hurling's fast lane in 2026. They will replace Antrim in the Leinster championship and just one win, as Offaly proved this season, might even be enough to keep them up. Can they do it? "Everyone has hopes and dreams - it would definitely be a dream of mine to stay up in the Leinster championship," said Boran. "But there's a lot of work to be done. I'm already looking forward to getting back in with the lads again. We'll try to drive on with the club first but we'll look forward to the new year with Kildare, absolutely." Kildare were defeated by Down in March's Division 2 league final but both sides were promoted to 1B for 2026. That will be another significant challenge for the Lilywhites, pitching them in alongside Crummey's Dubs and 2024 All-Ireland winners Clare next spring. "It's a huge challenge," acknowledged Boran of the overall test awaiting Kildare next year. "We'll try our best not to underestimate it. We know there's a huge amount of work to do to try to reach that level because it's a really different standard but we're up for trying to reach that level and we'll hopefully give a bit of entertainment to our fans too." And yet Kildare's season was in danger of bottoming out at the beginning of the McDonagh Cup. Fresh off that league final defeat, they lost their Round 1 game against Kerry in Newbridge. At that stage, the county had played nine Joe McDonagh Cup games ever and lost the lot. Remarkably, Kerry ended up getting relegated to the Ring Cup while Kildare redoubled their efforts and reeled off five wins to take the McDonagh Cup, beating favourites Laois by 10 points in the Croke Park final. "It was a lot of the lads' first time up in the Joe McDonagh Cup, it's a young team compared to previous years, so that first game definitely had a huge impact," said full-back Boran. "That was a tough one, we took it pretty hard but in fairness to the lads they showed the right attitude. Kerry are a good team as well. But we took that beating to heart and came back stronger. We had to up the physicality for the next game against Westmeath."

RTE unveils new line-up for autumn - but one hit show is noticeably absent

RTÉ's Dancing With The Stars boss says talks are still 'ongoing' for the show to return in January. RTÉ unveiled its new season launch on Thursday and the glitzy RTÉ One show was noticeably absent from the announcement of what's coming to our screen over the next few months. But ShinAwiL boss Larry Bass - who produces the show - said he is hoping for an announcement to be imminent as negotiations are 'ongoing'. He told us: 'These things take time. The summer doesn't help… but hopefully we will be doing a series, but until there is a contract, there is nothing contracted. 'We're in ongoing discussions but unfortunately the contract will only get done when everything else gets done. It feels like the peace process with Ukraine... until something is there to lock and load, we can't say for definite that the show will be back. Rhys McClenaghan and Laura Nolan were crowned Dancing with the Stars champions for 2025 (Image: Kyran OBrien) 'If you ask me what percentage would you say the show will be back, I'd say 80 per cent plus that it will be back but until we have a contract, I can't confirm anything. 'I would be shocked and stunned if they axed it at this point but I can't answer for RTÉ and until we have a contract, I can't say we are doing the show. It is all in the hands of RTÉ. They're not waiting for anything from us.' A spokesman for RTÉ said an announcement will be made ahead of the station's spring schedule launch in December.
