Knights score late to sink Dolphins as Bostock injured

Yahoo6 hours ago

Newcastle forward Brodie Jones scored in the final minute to sink the injury-hit Dolphins 26-20 in a thriller in Perth and keep the Knights' finals hopes alive.
Jones chased through a bomb and showed great determination to plant the ball down after Knights captain Kalyn Ponga had set up two tries in a brilliant display.

The Dolphins lost winger Jack Bostock to a suspected ACL rupture in the first half at HBF Park.
Bostock scored four tries in his previous outing and has been touted as a NSW representative of the future.
His loss adds to season-ending injuries already for key forwards Tom Gilbert, Daniel Saifiti and Max Plath, along with the continued absence of prop Thomas Flegler with a shoulder nerve complaint since April last year.
Newcastle have struggled in attack in 2025 but had more strike with centre Bradman Best back from a hamstring injury and winger Dominic Young returned to the club after a mid-season transfer from Sydney Roosters.
Ponga, backing up from Queensland's win on Wednesday, played a true captain's knock. He got his hands on the ball when the game was on the line and set up two tries for Best with pinpoint grubbers.

Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was also outstanding with the ball after his Maroons starring role.
Knights five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe swooped to score his 11th try of the season after a Jack Cogger bomb was dropped by Tabuai-Fidow.
Newcastle's kicking game was on song and they led 16-4 at one stage before the Dolphins hit back.
The dynamic Dolphins left edge was dangerous. Five-eighth Kodi Nikorima started and finished a move while new captain Isaiya Katoa put hole running specialist Connelly Lemuelu in with a precision pass.
The Knights lost Sharpe to an HIA and then centre Dane Gagai was sin-binned for a professional foul in the second half.
Katoa combined with versatile Kurt Donoghoe to put winger Jamayne Isaako over in the corner.
The Dolphins turned it on from their own tryline to take the lead with centre Herbie Farnworth igniting a move that was finished by Tabuai-Fidow.

Ponga laid on another try for Best with a pinpoint grubber to level it up at 20-all with 16 minutes to go before an enthralling finish that was capped by Jones' heroics.
The Dolphins had won their previous three matches and were gallant but the Knights were desperate and moved to 13th position with the win.

Four-try Johnston closes on record but Storm pip Souths

Alex Johnston is on track to break the NRL's try-scoring record this season but his four tries were not enough to prevent Ryan Papenhuyzen icing Melbourne's extra-time defeat of South Sydney. Fullback Papenhuyzen sealed the Storm's 25-24 win with his second attempt at field goal in the 84th minute, booting the ball over from 20 metres out at Accor Stadium on Saturday night. Latrell Mitchell had done his utmost to seal a Souths victory on return from State of Origin duty, including kicking to Tyrone Munro for the try that equalised the game with only four minutes to play. But he missed a potentially game-winning sideline conversion thereafter before his only field goal attempt sailed wide from 45 metres out. An error-prone Storm moved to extra time, sealing victory and jumping the Warriors into third spot on the ladder. Mitchell threw cut-out passes down the left side for Johnston's 203rd, 204th and 205th career tries. Johnston then intercepted a Jahrome Hughes pass for his fourth try of the night, moving only six behind the benchmark of 212 that Ken Irvine set in 1973. JOHNSTON HAS 4! 📣 #NRLSouthsStorm — NRL (@NRL) June 21, 2025 The winger's hopes of reaching the record appeared in doubt when the 30-year-old went down with a serious Achilles injury late last season. But he has since scored 11 tries in seven games this year, and with nine more to play in the regular season, is well on track to reach 213 by finals. He also became the first player to score four or more tries in a game against Melbourne since the perennially-successful Storm entered the competition in 1998. The loss is Wayne Bennett's 15th in a row against rival coach Craig Bellamy and came in the pair's record-breaking 44th time coaching against one another. Bennett has not beaten his former protege in any match since 2016, with Souths now in the midst of a four-game losing streak that ensures they will finish the weekend second-last on the ladder. The Storm scored in back-to-back sets to lead 12-0 after six minutes but Bellamy would have been furious that the Storm invited Souths back in with errors. The attacking powerhouse managed only a 68 per cent completion rate in the first half. Melbourne looked ready to break their hosts' hearts as Sua Fa'alogo fielded a Mitchell bomb on the 20-metre line to put Tyran Wishart in. The Rabbitohs equalised when Mitchell dared to kick a long grubber through the line for Munro from 30 metres out on the third tackle. But it was Papenhuyzen who had the last laugh.

Bundee Aki urges Lions to learn from Argentina defeat

Bundee Aki insists the British and Irish Lions must recover rapidly after seeing their goal of completing an unbeaten tour of Australia thwarted even before arriving Down Under. The Lions slipped to a 28-24 defeat against Argentina in Dublin as they lost their tour opener for the first time since 1971, albeit against dangerous opponents whose surgical finishing demonstrated why they are ranked fifth in the world. Advertisement Andy Farrell's men fly to Perth on Saturday and have four weeks to find the improvements needed to turn their ambitious but error-strewn performance into a formula capable of toppling the Wallabies. 'Faz set out the aim for us to win every single game. To not be able to come out with the result that we wanted in the first game…this has got to be one of those things that we learn from quickly,' Aki said. 'We're adults, we're old enough to be able to take it on the chin and move on quickly. Faz gives it to us straight, there's no mucking around or no hiding here, he just tells you how it is. 'There's no point in trying to sulk about it. If we bounce back quickly and try to get better every single day, this will only make us stronger and tighter.' Advertisement Aki's heavyweight centre partnership with Sione Tuipulotu generated the most excitement in selection ahead of the sold-out clash at the Aviva Stadium, but the combination failed to add up to the sum of its parts. While the Ireland centre showed his strength as a carrier to surge over in the first half and Tuipulotu had his moments with the ball in hand, together they were unable to link in the way the Lions were seeking and are unlikely to be used in tandem in the Test series. British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell (Brian Lawless/PA) 'We all know how Sione is as a player, he's class. The frustrating thing for me was I wasn't able to connect well with him,' Aki said. Advertisement 'He's an unbelievable player and there's no excuses, we've got to get better as a partnership going forward. 'Whoever plays – Garry Ringrose, Huw Jones, Elliot Daly – as a unit we've got to make sure we gel together and try to get that cohesiveness fairly quickly because we need to be better. 'Sione has been my roomy lately. He snores a fair bit at the moment, so he keeps me up at night! But he's a great man. 'He speaks out loud, which is good because we need him to be himself. I just feed off him and he feeds off me. So it's brilliant, but we've just got to be better and keep learning together.' Advertisement Aki, fly-half Fin Smith, prop Ellis Genge and wing Tommy Freeman were among those to advance their claims for a spot against Australia in the first Test on July 19, while Duhan van der Merwe and Ben Earl took a step backwards. Aki admits that when they arise, chances to impress selectors during the 10-fixture itinerary must be taken. 'When there's a group of 38 players from four different countries, you've obviously got to make sure you perform,' he said. 'Every single player that's been picked in the squad has to be able to do a job and if you don't deliver, there are guys who are willing to put their hand up and take that opportunity.'
