Knights score late to sink Dolphins as Bostock injured

Newcastle forward Brodie Jones scored in the final minute to sink the injury-hit Dolphins 26-20 in a thriller in Perth and keep the Knights' finals hopes alive. Jones chased through a bomb and showed great determination to plant the ball down after Knights captain Kalyn Ponga had set up two tries in a brilliant display. What an effort from Jones! 💪 #NRLDolphinsKnights — NRL (@NRL) June 21, 2025 The Dolphins lost winger Jack Bostock to a suspected ACL rupture in the first half at HBF Park. Bostock scored four tries in his previous outing and has been touted as a NSW representative of the future. His loss adds to season-ending injuries already for key forwards Tom Gilbert, Daniel Saifiti and Max Plath, along with the continued absence of prop Thomas Flegler with a shoulder nerve complaint since April last year. Newcastle have struggled in attack in 2025 but had more strike with centre Bradman Best back from a hamstring injury and winger Dominic Young returned to the club after a mid-season transfer from Sydney Roosters. Ponga, backing up from Queensland's win on Wednesday, played a true captain's knock. He got his hands on the ball when the game was on the line and set up two tries for Best with pinpoint grubbers. Copy and paste for Ponga and Best 🔥 #NRLDolphinsKnights — NRL (@NRL) June 21, 2025 Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was also outstanding with the ball after his Maroons starring role. Knights five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe swooped to score his 11th try of the season after a Jack Cogger bomb was dropped by Tabuai-Fidow. Newcastle's kicking game was on song and they led 16-4 at one stage before the Dolphins hit back. The dynamic Dolphins left edge was dangerous. Five-eighth Kodi Nikorima started and finished a move while new captain Isaiya Katoa put hole running specialist Connelly Lemuelu in with a precision pass. The Knights lost Sharpe to an HIA and then centre Dane Gagai was sin-binned for a professional foul in the second half. Katoa combined with versatile Kurt Donoghoe to put winger Jamayne Isaako over in the corner. The Dolphins turned it on from their own tryline to take the lead with centre Herbie Farnworth igniting a move that was finished by Tabuai-Fidow. Phins up for the Hammer 🔨🐬 #NRLDolphinsKnights Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) June 21, 2025 Ponga laid on another try for Best with a pinpoint grubber to level it up at 20-all with 16 minutes to go before an enthralling finish that was capped by Jones' heroics. The Dolphins had won their previous three matches and were gallant but the Knights were desperate and moved to 13th position with the win.

2025 Langer Trophy live stream: Ipswich SHS v Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Round 3

The younger brother of a former Blues Origin series winner shapes as shock weapon for Ipswich State High in its quest for the Langer Trophy. It took just two touches for underage teenager Baxter Best, the 16-year-old brother of Knights tearaway Bradman, to leave a palm-sized mark on the Langer Trophy last week. The boom rookie, who signed a four year deal with the Brisbane Broncos earlier this year, showed a similar stiff arm which helped his brother into a Blues jersey last year as he set up the match-sealing try against Marsden. Ipswich will be hoping Best can produce a few more of those as the school prepares to face off against reigning national champions Palm Beach Currumbin at North Ipswich Reserve on Tuesday. The match will be streamed live and exclusive at 5.30pm on KommunityTV through Ipswich State High coach Joshua Bretherton said his intention was to give the rookie a 10 minute taster in his debut. But an injury in the outside backs forced his hand early, and Best rose to the occasion. 'We felt that the best thing to do was to try and challenge him,' said Bretherton. 'To try put him out of his comfort zone. 'I thought he did a really solid job. 'I asked him to do some simple things defensively on exit and stuff and he did those things for me which is what I am most proud of. 'He did the team contribution stuff he needed to do and when the game broke open for him, he was able to do the bits everyone knows he can do.' Palm Beach Currumbin come into the clash against Ipswich with some form after bouncing back in Round 2 with a 24-12 win over Wavell State High.

2025 Langer Trophy live stream: Ipswich SHS v Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Round 3

Don't miss out on the headlines from Schoolboy Cup Livestream. Followed categories will be added to My News. He was given a baptism of fire against a tough Marsden State High in his Langer Trophy debut, and Ipswich's Baxter Best more than stood up to the challenge. But what will be in store for the younger brother of Blues Origin series winner Bradman when he clashes with the might of reigning national champions Palm Beach Currumbin? That match will be streamed live and free on KommunityTV on Tuesday afternoon, headlining a big triple header which features the Walters Cup (Year 10) and Schoolgirls Cup. A full News Corp Australia digital subscription will be required to watch the Walters Cup and Schoolgirls Cup. There is a storied history between Ipswich and Palm Beach Currumbin, with the two schools meeting in back-to-back Langer Trophy deciders between 2022-23. Another chapter of that pulsating new rivalry will be unfold at the North Ipswich Reserve from 5.30pm. Palm Beach Currumbin enter round 3 with a 24-4 confidence-boosting win over Wavell behind them. Picture: Liam Kidston Ipswich only just escaped the Makos by the skin of their teeth in round 2, with Best brilliant when he was thrust into the fray earlier than first anticipated. 'I said 'unless there's an injury, I'll put you on with about 20 minutes to go and we will give you an experience',' coach Josh Bretherton said. Unfortunately it was a concussion to right centre Tomu Cook early in the match that created the opportunity for Best, 16, to show his wares as the youngest on the field. With just his second touch of the ball, Best made a brilliant break and set up a defining try to fullback Tom Parker. Best's sound performance was a great early indication of his ability to play above his age. The Year 10 student is a rare breed because to accelerate his development, he is bypassing the Walters Cup to play Opens football. Reece Walsh (Keebra Park) and Jared Horne (current Wavell senior) are a few others to have done this. Wavell SHS senior Jared Horne, pictured as a Year 9 student, made his Langer Trophy debut in Year 10 and is making his way back from a patella fracture in his knee. 'We felt that the best thing to do was to try and challenge him,' said Bretherton. 'To try put him out of his comfort zone.' Best thrived in the new environment. 'I thought he did a really solid job,' Bretherton said. 'I asked him to do some simple things defensively on exit and stuff and he did those things for me which is what I am most proud of. 'He did the team contribution stuff he needed to do and when the game broke open for him, he was able to do the bits everyone knows he can do.' Baxter Best gets the ball away to Tom Parker. Picture courtesy of Jack O'Brien. His positive touches and runs from right centre were welcomed given the turbulent lead up to Wednesday's game that saw Ipswich lose both its edge forwards. Starting second rowers Innocent Baruani (concussion protocol) and Elsiyah Laumatia (ankle) were both late outs in the 24 hours leading up to the round 2 heavyweight bout, with Laumatia rolling his ankle the morning of. With Ipswich lacking two potent forwards, Mel Nonu stepped up to produce a titanic performance on the wing. Nonu, the younger brother of Dolphins young gun LJ, caught high balls extremely well under pressure and when his teammates were tiring late in the game, he maintained a high standard. He caught the ball all alone with Marsden defenders rushing forward and carried the ball out of the Ipswich half with vim and vigour. 'He kept showing up and carrying. I couldn't be more proud. He was so, so valuable,' Bretherton praised. Nonu's rapid rise to being one of the first picked each week for Ipswich is the product of a strong pre-season. Mel Nonu has been outstanding in 2025. Last year Nonu was getting better with every game in the Langer Reserves competition before going on to start all nine matches in this year's Mal Meninga Cup for the Jets. 'We thought he could play at this level but that he was going to have to work hard to get to this level and there was no guarantee he would've done it this year,' Bretherton reflected. 'When he rolled back in (after the summer holidays) and obviously watching how well he played for the Jets, it was like 'oh he will do it easy'. 'He was just a completely different player.' State of Origin injury crisis rocks NSW and Queensland camps ahead of Game 1

The New South Wales and Queensland State of Origin sides have been ripped apart as injuries wreaked havoc in round 11. In two days of complete NRL chaos, several Origin hopefuls have either been ruled out or are now in serious doubt as an injury crisis hits at the worst possible time for both Billy Slater and Laurie Daley. On Friday, the star of Game 3 last year, Bradman Best, was ruled out with a hamstring injury that is set to keep the Knights star on the sidelines for two to three months. Then on Friday night his teammate Jacob Saifiti, who was widely tipped to win a spot on Daley's NSW bench, picked up a calf injury that will see him miss Game 1. And the injury chaos only escalated on Saturday when Queensland Origin hopeful Tom Gilbert suffered what appeared to be a ruptured pec, after overreaching while unsuccessfully trying to stop Marata Niukore from scoring the game's opening try. If the worst is confirmed it will see Gilbert miss the entire Origin series as he will spend between 10 and 15 weeks on the sidelines. Yet the injury madness didn't stop there as in the second game on Saturday, NSW captain Jake Trbojevic was knocked out in a nasty incident. The inspirational Blues skipper was already under a lot of pressure to retain his spot and there were mixed opinions over whether he should or would retain his spot in 2025. But he is no longer a selection headache for NSW coach Daley after the Manly front rower was concussed after he got his head in the wrong position in a collision with Cowboys' Murray Taulagi. As a result of the NRL's mandatory stand-down policy, Trbojevic will be ruled out of Game 1. While his brother Tom Trbojevic seemingly played himself out of a Blues jersey as he continues to be severely hampered by a knee injury that saw him spend several weeks on the sideline earlier this year. The Manly star lacked punch in attack and his performance was riddled with mistakes. The Sea Eagles No. 1 made five errors in Saturday night's win over the Cowboys, including a knock-on with the line wide open. He also bombed another two tries and wrapped up his horror show by being sin-binned in the closing seconds. While NSW fans also face a nervous wait about the potential availability of damaging back-rower Haumole Olakau'atu after he was placed on report for a rogue kick out that struck Murray Taulagi in the head. You can watch Haumole Olakau'atu's incident at the top of the page. Ryan Papenhuyzen also faces a nervous wait after the emotions got the better of him in Melbourne's 31-26 loss to the Sharks. In the final play of the game the Storm No. 1 caught winger Ronaldo Mulitalo high while the Sharks player was defenceless on the ground. Papenhuyzen was believed to be in contention for the Blues No.1 jersey and even potentially a spot on the bench but could find himself facing a ban after Saturday night's indiscretion. The Blues side will be named on Sunday night at the conclusion of the round, with Slater to unveil his side on Monday morning.
