State of Origin injury crisis rocks NSW and Queensland camps ahead of Game 1
The New South Wales and Queensland State of Origin sides have been ripped apart as injuries wreaked havoc in round 11.
In two days of complete NRL chaos, several Origin hopefuls have either been ruled out or are now in serious doubt as an injury crisis hits at the worst possible time for both Billy Slater and Laurie Daley.

On Friday, the star of Game 3 last year, Bradman Best, was ruled out with a hamstring injury that is set to keep the Knights star on the sidelines for two to three months.
Then on Friday night his teammate Jacob Saifiti, who was widely tipped to win a spot on Daley's NSW bench, picked up a calf injury that will see him miss Game 1.
And the injury chaos only escalated on Saturday when Queensland Origin hopeful Tom Gilbert suffered what appeared to be a ruptured pec, after overreaching while unsuccessfully trying to stop Marata Niukore from scoring the game's opening try.
If the worst is confirmed it will see Gilbert miss the entire Origin series as he will spend between 10 and 15 weeks on the sidelines.
Yet the injury madness didn't stop there as in the second game on Saturday, NSW captain Jake Trbojevic was knocked out in a nasty incident.
The inspirational Blues skipper was already under a lot of pressure to retain his spot and there were mixed opinions over whether he should or would retain his spot in 2025.
But he is no longer a selection headache for NSW coach Daley after the Manly front rower was concussed after he got his head in the wrong position in a collision with Cowboys' Murray Taulagi.
As a result of the NRL's mandatory stand-down policy, Trbojevic will be ruled out of Game 1.
While his brother Tom Trbojevic seemingly played himself out of a Blues jersey as he continues to be severely hampered by a knee injury that saw him spend several weeks on the sideline earlier this year.
The Manly star lacked punch in attack and his performance was riddled with mistakes.
The Sea Eagles No. 1 made five errors in Saturday night's win over the Cowboys, including a knock-on with the line wide open.
He also bombed another two tries and wrapped up his horror show by being sin-binned in the closing seconds.
While NSW fans also face a nervous wait about the potential availability of damaging back-rower Haumole Olakau'atu after he was placed on report for a rogue kick out that struck Murray Taulagi in the head.
You can watch Haumole Olakau'atu's incident at the top of the page.
Ryan Papenhuyzen also faces a nervous wait after the emotions got the better of him in Melbourne's 31-26 loss to the Sharks.
In the final play of the game the Storm No. 1 caught winger Ronaldo Mulitalo high while the Sharks player was defenceless on the ground.
Papenhuyzen was believed to be in contention for the Blues No.1 jersey and even potentially a spot on the bench but could find himself facing a ban after Saturday night's indiscretion.
The Blues side will be named on Sunday night at the conclusion of the round, with Slater to unveil his side on Monday morning.

GWS Giants v Gold Coast AFL Round 14: Live updates, SuperCoach scores, teams
Lachie Whitfield has regained his status as the Giants' kick-in king. After taking seven kick-ins from rounds 11-13 – when coach Adam Kingsley experimented with Whitfield at half-forward for extended periods – he took 12 against Brisbane, the highest figure for the round (Eagle Tom McCarthy was the only other player in double figures). And Whitfield played on from all 12. His starting position will be crucial on Sunday, with Champion Data statistics showing Gold Coast concedes more SuperCoach points to general defenders than any other team. Allowing Whitfield and Lachie Ash to run free could be a disaster for the Suns as both teams try to cement their spot in the top eight. In the second Sunday game, the Western Bulldogs will try to push into the eight when they face Richmond under the roof at Marvel Stadium.

‘One for the ages': UFC rocked as icon retires on the spot
Jon Jones, regarded as the greatest mixed martial arts champion of all time, has retired, UFC CEO Dana White announced on Sunday morning Australian time. White said that 37-year-old Jones informed the UFC of his decision to retire the day prior. A heavyweight title unification bout between Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall had been touted, but Jones' decision elevates Aspinall to undisputed champion. 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired,' White said at a press conference in Azerbaijan. 'Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.' White went on to say that the UFC will work with Aspinall on finding him his first title defence, but Jones is yet to comment publicly on the announcement. The American (28-1) moved up from the light heavyweight division to become the heavyweight champion in 2023. He defended his belt once during his time on top, against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November last year, and had repeatedly played down talk about an impending fight against Aspinall. The potential matchup would have been one of the biggest in UFC history, but Jones continually suggested it would not change his legacy. Fans accused him of ducking the 32-year-old Englishman, and there was so much outrage that an online petition to strip Jones of the title collated more than 200,000 signatures. 'I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and money, but we'll make it up to him,' White said. 'Tom Aspinall is a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process that we've gone through. 'He's been willing to do anything — fight him anywhere and anytime and do this, and now he's like, 'I'll fight anybody. You tell me who, and I'll fight him'. 'So Aspinall has been great. He's going to be a great heavyweight champion for us, and I'm excited to work with him.' White's words came as Khalil Rountree Jr. dominated former champion Jamahal Hill in a five-round decision in their light heavyweight bout in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Baku, Azerbaijan. Jon Jones' career was one for the ages: ðŸ† 16 wins in UFC title fights ðŸ† Youngest UFC champion of all time (23) ðŸ† 20 fight unbeaten streak ðŸ† Two-division UFC champion ðŸ† 22 career wins in UFC, T-5th most all-time ðŸ† Never been knocked down in his MMA career — ESPN MMA (@espnmma) June 21, 2025 Jones became the youngest ever UFC champion at just 21 years of age, and he went undefeated in championship fights with a 16-0 record despite taking on more of them than anyone else. He is one of only fighters to boast titles in multiple weight classes, and his 22 wins are the equal fifth most in UFC history. Jones also attracted plenty of attention outside of the Octagon. He was arrested and charged for a hit-and-run in 2015 after he fled the scene of a vehicle accident which injured a 25-year-old pregnant woman. The following year, Jones was banned from competition for one year as a result a positive drug test, but he has long maintained that the positive result was due to contaminated legal supplements.

Minjee Lee leads Women's PGA Championship heading to final round
Minjee Lee is on the precipice of landing a third career major and the biggest cheque in women's golf after seizing a commanding lead at the PGA Championship in Texas. The Australian star defied more brutal conditions with a sublime third-round 3-under-par 69 to skip out to a four-shot lead at PGA Frisco's scorching and windswept Fields Ranch East course. Lee started the day three shots behind world number two Jeeno Thitikul and was unable to make any inroads on the Thai before hitting top gear around the turn. Brilliant off the tee and with the broomstick putter in hand, the Perth prodigy collected her first birdie of the day on the ninth hole, then nabbed two more on 14 and 15 to turn a three-shot deficit into a four-stroke buffer. After hitting 11 of 14 fairways and needing just 26 putts, Lee finished round three at 6-under, a score Thitikul briefly reached before stumbling with four back-nine bogeys in a rough four-over round of 76. The leading duo are the only players in red numbers as the season's third major shapes as a final-day match-play showdown. South Korean Hye-jin Choi (72), Japan's Miyu Yamashita (73) and American Lexi Thompson (75) are tied for third at one over, seven shots behind the runaway leader. Victory for the 29-year-old would earn Lee the third leg of women's golf grand slam following her 2021 Evian Championship triumph and 2022 US Open success. Lee is also hoping to snap a 19-month winless run, the longest drought of her decorated career. Victory would also secure Australian women's sport's highest earner another monster cheque of $US3.4 million ($5.25 million), the equal-highest payday in her game's history. AAP
