Deposit costs to buoy Affin Bank
PETALING JAYA: Affin Bank Bhd 's net interest income (NIM) is expected to remain resilient in the lender's upcoming second quarter (2Q25) earnings announcement, analysts say.
Affin's NIM is expected to be underpinned by a solid loan base, said Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research).
Despite some churn, the research house said Affin's loan pipeline remains robust at about RM9bil.
'Concurrently, 2Q25 NIM is expected to remain stable sequentially as proactive cost of funds optimisation efforts are set to largely offset any asset yield pressure from loan competition.
'Meanwhile, with the yields for 10-year Malaysian Government Securities currently still below 3.5%, there's significant room for Affin to capitalise on favourable trading opportunities,' HLIB Research said in a report.
HLIB Research also expects the bank's gross credit cost to remain stable, supported by steady asset quality. Additionally, improved recovery momentum should help keep net credit costs within single digits for this financial year (FY25).
'We maintain our 'buy' rating on Affin, with an unchanged target price of RM3, implying a 0.60 time FY26 price-to-book value.
'We believe the bank is on the cusp of a notable enhancement in profitability, primarily driven by a fundamental shift in its funding mix, alongside a robust loan pipeline and enhanced operational efficiencies, which are set to drive return on equity.'
The research house said while sector-wide asset yields have gradually declined, Affin's primary challenge and significant opportunity lie in managing its cost of deposits.
It said liquidity following the cut in the Statutory Reserve Requirement could partially offset the impact of the recent 25 basis points (bps) cut in the overnight policy rate (OPR) .
Deposit competition is easing and Affin is expected to benefit from an increase in low-cost current account and savings account deposits, driven by inflows from Sarawak, the bank's major shareholder.
This is estimated at around RM130mil per month by 3Q25.
According to HLIB Research, this allows the bank to shift from costly promotional rates for deposits to lower-cost payroll-based accounts, helping build a more stable and cheaper funding base.
'Interestingly, our tracker on retail fixed deposit (FD) promotional rates showed that after the 25bps OPR cut on July 9, Affin aggressively slashed its FD promotional rates by between 35bps and 50bps, whereas peers only cut up to 25bps.
'This steeper reduction suggests a deliberate strategy, likely driven by the anticipation of cheaper funding sources coming online, which enables Affin to reduce reliance on higher-cost deposits,' the research house said.

Cautious outlook ahead for auto stocks
HLIB Research revised the total industry volume up to 770,000 from 750,000 for this year compared with 818,000 last year. PETALING JAYA: Automotive stocks continue to be weighed by a cloudy outlook for vehicle sales, with both national and non-national marques showing declines, according to figures released by the Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) for June. Analysts covering automotive stocks remained cautious about the outlook as sales in the first half of the year dropped nearly 5% compared with the similar period a year ago. UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH) Research has maintained an 'underweight' call on automotive stocks, as competition remained intense with limited margin recovery and earnings upside. Its top pick remained Pecca Group Bhd , a producer of car seat covers, in which the research house has a 'buy' call and a target price (TP) of RM1.68. UOBKH Research noted that automotive stocks' valuation of 11.8 times was fair, given the muted earnings outlook and limited catalysts with upside potential likely capped in the near term. TA Research has maintained a 'neutral' recommendation, with the TIV forecast for this year of 700,000 units under review (MAA projected 780,000). The research house has a 'hold' call on Sime Darby Bhd with a TP of RM1.66, and 'sell' ratings on MBM Resources Bhd with a TP of RM4.31 and Bermaz Auto Bhd with a TP of 75 sen. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research, which has also maintained a 'neutral' stance on the stocks, pointed to intense competition from the entry of multiple new electric vehicle players challenging non-national marques amid competitive pricing strategies. It revised the total industry volume up to 770,000 from 750,000 for this year compared with 818,000 last year. Despite the challenges, the research house expected the market to normalise and saw upside potential, supported by exciting new model launches throughout the year and intensified marketing efforts by original equipment manufacturers aiming to sustain sales, albeit likely at the cost of margins. 'Order backlogs continued to decline in the second quarter of 2025 and are expected to soften further in the coming quarters, in line with weakening consumer sentiment amid a slowing economic outlook and the anticipated petrol subsidy rationalisation in the second half of 2025,' the research house said. HLIB Research projected automotive earnings to decline this year, driven by lower sales volumes and higher operating costs from more aggressive promotional activities but this would be partially offset by a stronger ringgit against the US dollar and Japanese yen. According to the research house, its top pick is MBM Resources with a 'buy' call and a TP of RM7.10, supported by exposure to national marques under Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd and dividend yields.

HLIB downgrades ViTrox to 'Sell' on tax burden, valuation concerns
KUALA LUMPUR: ViTrox Corp Bhd's earnings outlook is clouded by rising tax burdens and stretched valuations, prompting HLIB Research to downgrade the automated test equipment manufacturer. The firm cautioned that the expiry of ViTrox's pioneer tax incentive could materially erode net profits going forward, highlighting it as a key de-rating catalyst. "The higher taxation was a negative surprise, following the expiry of ViTrox's pioneer status tax incentive on June 16, 2025, which limited the core profit after tax growth to 40 per cent, settling at RM37 million," it said in a note. HLIB Research downgraded its call to "Sell" from "Hold" previously with an unchanged target price of RM2.65 based on price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 34 times based on projected earnings for the financial year 2026 (FY26). ViTrox's book-to-bill ratio normalised to 1.1 times from 1.3 times in the first quarter, reflecting the tapering of frontloaded orders ahead of US tariff changes. All segments recorded growth, driven by a 16 per cent expansion in automated board inspection (ABI) and a robust 59 per cent surge in machine vision system and test (MVST). Meanwhile, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) margins improved to 20 per cent from 17.5 per cent. Although the key segments posted strong growth and expanded Ebitda, foreign exchange losses and demand risks from tariff uncertainties continue to pose headwinds. "ViTrox maintains a cautious stance to capture anticipated demand recovery. "Ongoing, disciplined research and development investment will help the company stay technologically relevant. "However, foreign exchange volatility, higher reciprocal tariffs from the US and component shortages could weigh on its near-term margins," HLIB Research added, Despite a 40 per cent share price rally since April, HLIB Research argues that ViTrox's current valuation of price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 48.5 times based on projected earnings for FY26 is excessive.

Data centres continue to be key growth driver
HLIB Research said it foresees a DC award cycle in the second half. PETALING JAYA: The construction sector appears to be on a growth trajectory and share prices are catching up, according to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research. The key drivers of the growth story came from data centres (DCs) and public sector related jobs such as roads, railways and water, said the research house. 'The robust figure in the first half of the year reinforces the growth path for contracts in 2025, extending the order book expansion trajectory. 'In our view, with the sizeable data centre tenders set for awards in the second half, there is potential to match decade high flows last achieved in 2016,' it said. 'Domestic contract awards in the second quarter of the year came in at RM11.2bil, bringing the total sum in the first half to RM27.5bil, increasing by 33%. 'This is the fifth consecutive quarter of double digit contract value awarded,' HLIB Research added, noting that order books are poised to expand. The research house noted this being the fifth consecutive quarter of double digit contract value awarded which had expanded in the billions. 'In our view, with sizeable DC tenders set for awards in the second half, there is potential to match decade high flows last achieved in 2016,' it said. 'We are foreseeing a DC award cycle in the second half, to be driven by multiple award decisions for DC tenders placed in the first half of this year – this includes multiple multi-billion ringgit tenders for one US based hyperscaler,' it added. In the DC segment, HLIB Research noted that bigger projects are better for companies such as Gamuda Bhd , Sunway Construction Group Bhd and IJM Corp Bhd , given their competitive advantages such as balance sheet strength, track record and integrated structure. 'While news of potential artificial intelligence chip curb is concerning, in our view, Malaysian contractors are reliant on US and or Western-based hyperscaler names for sizeable DC jobs, thus mitigating uncertainties to a certain extent, in our view. 'DCs aside, the second half could see more action coming from the New Pantai Expressway extension, Penang Light Rail Transit (subcontracts and systems package) while sizeable road projects in Sabah and Sarawak may materialise,' it said. 'As for the commercial segment (including residential projects sitting on commercial plots), lack of clarity on sales and services tax treatment could weigh on the pipeline in the third quarter of the year,' HLIB Research added. The research house had an 'overweight' rating with its top pick being Gamuda – a 'buy' with a target price of RM5.70. It said contractors in the sector could broadly add to their order book from the DC segment as well as from infrastructure projects, while valuations at current levels provide room for upside.
