Bengaluru priest helms world's first AI film in Kannada on Rs 10 lakh budget

India Today22-04-2025

Narasimha Murthy, a priest from Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, has surprised the Kannada film industry by claiming to have directed the world's first full-length feature film entirely created using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Titled 'Love You', the 95-minute Kannada film has received a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), signalling a milestone moment for regional cinema and AI-driven filmmaking.advertisementMurthy, who serves as a priest at the Hanumantharai Temple, collaborated with graphic designer-turned-AI technician Nuthan to bring his vision to life. Despite being a two-member team, the duo generated the entire cast, soundtrack, visuals, and even drone-style shots using nearly 30 different AI tools. The film was completed in six months on a modest budget of Rs 10 lakh, most of which was spent on software licencing.
Speaking to The Times of India, Murthy said, 'I wanted to make the world's first AI feature film and release it. To begin with, I'll be screening it on just one screen to set the record.' The film includes 12 original songs and AI-generated dialogues, although Murthy wrote all the lyrics and dialogues himself.Murthy admitted to the limitations of the technology, saying, 'Even the regional censor officer pointed out inconsistencies in the characters' features from scene to scene. Creating emotional expressions was a challenge, and lip-syncing is far from ideal.' However, the CBFC was reportedly impressed by the film's ambition and innovation.advertisementNuthan, the film's AI engineer, highlighted the rapid evolution of AI tools, saying, 'The tools we used are already six months old. If we recreated the same film today, it would be a thousand times better.' From characters to music and cinematography, everything was created digitally, setting a precedent in low-budget regional cinema.Reportedly, Murthy is already working on two more AI-driven projects. One will explore the life of Bengaluru's founder, Kempe Gowda, and another will depict the historical figure Immadi Pulikeshi. The first of these is expected to be completed within two months.

‘Detective Ujjwalan' box office collections day 20: Dhyan Sreenivasan's film dips; mints Rs 6.84 crores

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After a decent start and a steady run in its early days, Dhyan Sreenivasan's investigative comedy thriller 'Detective Ujjwalan' is now witnessing a noticeable dip in box office numbers. The film, which blends humour with suspense, has collected Rs 6.84 crore globally as of Day 20, with Rs 6.33 crore from its domestic net collections. Gradual Decline in Daily Earnings According to the Sacnilk website, the drop in footfalls over the past week reflects the film's waning momentum. From earning Rs 85 lakhs on its opening day and Rs 78 lakhs on Day 2, the film peaked early and began to slow down after its first weekend. By Day 10, collections dropped to Rs 20 lakhs and have continued on a downward trajectory since. The last five days have seen particularly low figures — Rs 13 lakhs on Day 16, Rs 14 lakhs on Day 15, and only Rs 4 lakhs on Day 20. While the early buzz around the film helped boost its initial box office performance, sustained traction has proven difficult, especially in the face of new releases and mixed audience word-of-mouth. Detective Ujjwalan - Official Trailer No Final Verdict Yet, But Overall Performance Steady Despite the dip, 'Detective Ujjwalan' has managed to cross Rs 6 crore in India, a respectable feat for a regional film with a niche genre appeal. ETimes gave the movie a rating of 2.5 star out of 5 and our official review reads, 'There are some rules that a detective story needs to make it work and for the effect to stay with us. Some red herrings that will confuse the audience so that we are emotionally and intellectually caught up in the story, a detective who uses logic that will baffle us with its brilliance and a final revelation of the culprit that will shock us. Detective Ujjwalan does not use any of these devices in a forceful enough manner. The period settings are interesting and the village characters are loveable enough, though some of the superb comic talents from social media, Ameen, Nihal Nizam, Nibraz and Shahubas, are barely utilised. The film seems to go in the direction of most Dhyan films; a bit of an anti-climax.'

Kamal Haasan's Thug Life Sees A Dip On Day 7, Mints Rs 1.25 Crore

Upon its release on June 5, Thug Life opened to a thunderous response from the audience but failed to keep the excitement intact post Monday. Despite huge expectations, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam 's Thug Life continues to witness underwhelming box-office collections. The gangster drama which marked the reunion of two industry stalwarts 37 years after the release of Nayakan, had fans buzzing with excitement before the film's release. Upon its release on June 5, the film opened to a thunderous response from the audience but failed to keep the excitement intact post Monday. On Wednesday, the gangster drama seemed to slow down, witnessing only minimal growth. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life collected just Rs 1.25 crore on Day 7 (Wednesday), which brings the film's total to Rs 42.25 crore. The week began with a significant collection of Rs 2.3 Crore on Monday and saw a steady dip on Tuesday, earning mere Rs 1.8 crore. Looking at the downward graph, it seems the Kamal Haasan starrer is far from the state of recovery and might prove to be one of the box-office disasters of the year. The decline in the number of Thug Life's collections can be attributed to the film's clash with big players like Housefull 5. The film, starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan has been maintaining a strong hold among audiences ever since its theatrical release. Directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by Kamal Haasan, Thug Life boasts a star-studded ensemble cast including Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Nassar and Rohit Saraf among others. The storyline chronicles the life of Rangaraya Sakthivel, an ageing gangster, seeking revenge against those who betrayed him, including his own brother, former gang members and a man named Amar. As he embarks on the journey to destroy everyone he believes is threatening him, the film explores the themes of betrayal and power struggles. Sakthivel's extramarital affair with Indrani (played by Trisha Krishnan), a popular social media influencer, also forms a subplot of the storyline. Earlier, Kamal Haasan opened up about his reunion with Mani Ratnam. The actor told ANI, 'Every film is a challenge, especially when you combine it with another director, such as Mani Ratnam, with an intriguing story. Fortunately, he involved me in the story's preparation. I gave him an idea. I spent the majority of my time gathering vegetables and assisting him in making them more tasty." Kamal Haasan will next be seen in Kalki 2898 AD Part 2. About the Author Shrishti Negi First Published: June 12, 2025, 10:10 IST
