Manchester United tests loyalty of Chinese fans, stares at possible empty seats in Hong Kong friendly
Yan Gang speaks for many Manchester United fans when he says: 'We've been numbed by performances over the past few seasons.'
Manchester United once claimed to have more than 100 million followers in China, Yan among them, but like supporters of the club everywhere their loyalty is being put severely to the test.
As an illustration of United's fall from grace in China and beyond, tickets for Friday's friendly at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium against the city's representative team were still available on Thursday afternoon.
Tickets also appeared on resale websites with their prices slashed 50 percent.
United was beaten 1-0 in Malaysia by a Southeast Asian XI on Wednesday and booed off, a fresh low in a dismal season for Ruben Amorim's bedraggled men.

'Every season ends with the same old story with no sign of recovery,' said Yan, a supporter for 23 years and organiser of a United fans' association in Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong in mainland China.
Amorim's side left for Asia on Sunday, hours after concluding its worst season since 1974, to play friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.
The Old Trafford club made no attempt to hide the motivation for flying across the world straight after a draining and demoralising campaign that saw it come 15th in the Premier League and fail to lift a trophy.
'Tour fixtures drive significant additional revenue which help make the club stronger, allowing us to keep investing in success on the pitch,' chief executive Omar Berrada said.
This week's Asia visit will generate about USD 10 million (7.8m pounds) for United, the BBC reported.

China has the world's second-biggest economy and second-biggest population, making it a vital market.
United's finances are under scrutiny with co-owner Jim Ratcliffe implementing steep cuts since buying a minority stake just over a year ago. The club recently announced a further 200 redundancies were planned after 250 jobs were cut last year.
Ratcliffe claimed in March that the Red Devils would have 'run out of money at Christmas' otherwise.
Romance is dead
From Kuala Lumpur, where it was 32 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) at kickoff on Wednesday, it is a four-hour flight to a similarly sticky Hong Kong.
July friendlies in the city between Tottenham and Arsenal, and Liverpool and AC Milan, sold out within hours of going on general sale.
No such luck for United for its exhibition match with the Hong Kong team, and with a day until kick-off it faces the ignominy of playing in front of empty seats.
The 39-year-old fan Yan said that the United supporters club in Shenzhen has about 2,000 members. That number has hardly grown in the past few years, he said. Older fans make up the vast majority of members.

'I can't think of any words we can use to attract new fans because the team has a bad record and no standout stars to recruit younger fans,' said Yan.
He Zhiyi, a United fan for more than a decade, is flying to Hong Kong from the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu.
She had hoped to see the squad parade the Europa League trophy, but Amorim's side lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the final.
With it went United's hopes of sneaking into the Champions League, which would have brought badly needed revenue, prestige and pulling power.
'The team is all over the place -- players, coaches and management are not moving in one direction,' said the 32-year-old He, a football content creator and author. 'It feels like the team is killing the enthusiasm of the fans, as if the romance can't be sustained anymore.'
Zhang Chongqian, also from Chengdu, said United's 'spirit and traditions' have been lost. 'In recent years, our fans (in China) gradually stopped watching Manchester United or even football,' the 38-year-old lifelong supporter said.
Zhang will not join those fans abandoning his side, even after the poorest season in the club's recent history.
'Manchester United have been experiencing a period of sinking,' he said. 'But there are still so many fans who will never give up on them.'

"Major boost for Bihar's aviation sector": Sanjay Jha praises CM Nitish after cabinet reduced VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 3 (ANI): Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, on Tuesday, praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after state cabinet reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 29 per cent to just 4 per cent. In a post on X, Jha termed it a major boost for Bihar's aviation sector. 'The Bihar Cabinet has taken a landmark step by reducing VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 29% to just 4%. For flights under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), the VAT rate remains unchanged at 1%. Heartfelt gratitude to CM Nitishumar Ji for this progressive decision, one that will encourage more airlines to operate in the state and make air travel more accessible and affordable,' Sanjay Jha said. 'This reform is expected to significantly boost the number of flights from Patna, Darbhanga, and Gayaji, enhancing Bihar's air connectivity and opening new avenues for tourism, trade, and growth,' the JD(U) MP said. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar chaired a high-level cabinet meeting on Tuesday and approved 47 key proposals, including large-scale infrastructure projects, new government job openings, and significant policy decisions. The Bihar Cabinet approved the creation of 4,858 new posts across various government departments to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery. Among the major infrastructure decisions, a Rs 1,320 crore plan was approved for setting up a sewerage network project in Sasaram, Aurangabad, and Siwan. In addition, a Rs 328 crore water supply scheme received clearance for Ara, Siwan, and Sasaram cities, aiming to boost urban utility services. The cabinet also approved a new Bridge Maintenance Policy, which would ensure regular inspection, safety checks, and timely repairs of bridges across the state. In a move expected to improve air connectivity, the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in Bihar was reduced from 29 per cent to 4 per cent. A proposal to build a dry dock in Dujra, Patna, was also approved. The facility will be used to repair aircraft, making it the first such unit in the region. In a significant step towards women's empowerment, the cabinet decided that 'Jeevika Didis' (members of the state's women's self-help groups) would prepare clothes for children at Anganwadi centres. The area of Phulwari Sharif, Danapur, and Khagol near the capital of Patna will be expanded, and many villages will become part of these cities. (ANI)

Bruno Fernandes turns down lucrative Al Hilal offer to stay at Man United
MUNICH — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a proposed move to Saudi club Al Hilal because he wants 'to play at the highest possible level.' Fernandes confirmed Tuesday that he had received an 'exciting offer' from the Riyadh-based club to switch after what was a disappointing season for United. 'They waited for me to think about my future, because I said only if Manchester thought it was the time to move on, that I'd be willing to do so,' Fernandes said through an interpreter. 'I talked to the gaffer, Ruben Amorim, and at the time he asked me not to go. I then talked to Man United. They said they didn't want to sell me. If I wanted to go, I could, but they didn't need the money, they didn't need to sell me.' Media reports suggested Al Hilal was prepared to pay 100 million pounds to take the 30-year-old Fernandes from United while offering him a wage of 700,000 pounds per week to play for the Saudi Pro League team. 'It was a very exciting offer,' Fernandes said. 'The president of Al Hilal, he was very nice to me. He talked to my manager but then I talked to my wife and as a family we wanted to see what I wanted to do. She asked me, what do you want to do with your future?' Fernandes last year signed a contract extension to stay at Old Trafford until June 2027. This season did not go as planned as the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing 15th in the Premier League, while it also endured the heartbreak of losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. 'We had goals and we didn't meet them,' said Fernandes, a key figure for United since his arrival in January 2020. He said it would have been easy for the family to make the move to Riyadh, and for him to adjust to the team with Portugal teammates Rúben Neves and João Cancelo already playing for Al Hilal. 'I'm used to them, but I want to play at the highest possible level," he said. "I want play for major competitions. I know I still can, and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. And for better or worse, I'm still very passionate about football. This is how I see football. This is how I see my life and my future, and I'm happy about the decision I made.' Fernandes was speaking as a Portugal player before the team's Nations League semifinal against Germany on Wednesday in Munich. The winner of that game will face either France or Spain in Sunday's final. soccer: /hub/soccer
