Meta and Oakley's new AI smart glasses: Are Americans ready for wearable AI?

Meta and Oakley's new AI smart glasses: Are Americans ready for wearable AI?

Hindustan Times9 hours ago

Meta's latest partnership with Oakley isn't just about sleek eyewear—it's about pushing AI-powered wearables into the real world. Enter the Oakley Meta HSTN, a pair of smart glasses designed for athletes, creators, and anyone who's ready to move beyond screens.
The question is: are Americans ready for AI on their face, literally? Overview of the Oakley Meta HSTN glasses
Sporty by design and loaded with tech, the HSTNs pair Oakley's high-performance frames with Meta's second-gen smart glasses hardware. Think lightweight build, comfortable grip, and enough ruggedness to handle an outdoor workout.
Key features include a 3K ultra-wide camera for crisp, first-person photos and videos, open-ear speakers for discreet audio, and IPX4 water resistance, meaning you won't need to worry about sweat or rain.
Battery life has seen a solid boost—up to 8 hours of use, 19 hours standby, and a portable charging case that adds another 48 hours of juice. Priced at $399, with a limited-edition Desert K Prm Polar variant at $499, they hit shelves in the US on July 11, 2025. AI and performance features
This isn't a gimmick. Meta AI is baked into the experience, offering real-time voice commands for things like weather updates, navigation tips, or checking your calendar, all without pulling out your phone.
The camera comes with a physical shutter button and a privacy indicator LED. Video clips are capped at three minutes, but media syncs quickly with your smartphone via Meta View.
On the audio front, you get five microphones for clearer calls and smart voice interactions, while touch controls on the frame let you manage volume or skip songs. Stream your workout playlists directly from Spotify or Apple Music, hands-free.
Designed with active users in mind, the HSTNs are ideal for cyclists, runners, golfers, and anyone who wants tech that moves with them, not against them. Early US consumer reactions and market context
Initial feedback has been largely positive. Users praise the improved audio, battery reliability, and the camera's image quality compared to Meta's Ray-Ban line. Criticism? Mostly around the short video limit and lack of optical zoom, but these are trade-offs for size and weight.
Consumer appetite for smart glasses is growing, especially with over 2 million Ray-Ban Meta units sold so far. Meta's strategy is clear: own the premium active-lifestyle segment. Celebrity endorsements from Kylian Mbappé and Patrick Mahomes are already building momentum. Is America ready for everyday wearable AI?
With performance, design, and utility finally syncing up, the Oakley Meta HSTN could be the most practical take on smart glasses yet. They're sporty, smart, and surprisingly subtle. And while early adopters are leading the charge, everyday users may not be far behind.
Wearable AI isn't a what-if anymore, it's here. And Meta just made it wearable.

Perplexity AI adds WhatsApp task scheduling support: Here's how it works

Perplexity, the popular AI-powered search engine, is getting a new feature that allows users to schedule tasks on WhatsApp. Aravind Srinivas, the CEO and co-founder of Perplexity, announced the new feature in a post on LinkedIn, saying that 'this is the first time you get to feel a basic assistant on WhatsApp that sends periodic news alerts, custom reminders at a frequency you set all in simple natural language.' For example, you can ask the AI chatbot to remind you to turn off the AC in one hour or ask it to send updates about something you are interested in whenever you want. As you can see in the image below, the AI chatbot will remind you of these tasks by sending a text message on WhatsApp. To use Perplexity on WhatsApp, add +1 (833) 436-3285 to your contacts, open WhatsApp on your preferred device and start talking to the AI chatbot without having to install any additional apps. Perplexity on WhatsApp lets users do tasks like answering questions, researching topics, generating custom images and summarising content, to name a few. The AI chatbot is also available on Telegram under the name 'askplexbot.' Compared to the native app, Perplexity's WhatsApp integration is a huge step, as users on the platform don't have to sign up or log in to use the service. Last month, Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed that they were planning to add more features to the WhatsApp version of the chatbot. Some of these include a voice mode, memes, videos, fact-checking capabilities, and the newly introduced assistant functionalities, to name a few. The company also recently upgraded its chatbot on X (formerly Twitter) with new video capabilities that allow users to generate eight-second clips with sound using generative AI. Earlier this month, both Apple and Meta were reportedly considering purchasing Perplexity. While Meta has been on a shopping spree for months now, Apple's name comes as a surprise, as it could signal a potential shift in Cupertino's AI strategy.

The rise of AI travel influencers: Can they be trusted?

It's the age of artificial intelligence, and the travel industry is catching on. The evolution has been quick — automated chatbots are now being replaced by AI-generated influencers. Virtual travel influencers like Bengaluru-based Radhika Subramaiam and Germany's Emma aim to provide localised suggestions and real-time updates for travellers.(Photos: Instagram / indiawithradhika, emmatravelsgermany) Radhika Subramaniam, for instance, isn't your regular travel content creator. Fluent in Tamil and English, this AI influencer can be in Paris by day and Tokyo by night — without flight costs, hotel bookings or delays. AI influencers aren't a new concept by any means — Kyra became Meta's first AI influencer in 2022 and was soon followed by lifestyle-focused AI mom-fluencer Kavya Mehra — but are still fresh enough to be novel. It's convenient, but can you really trust the travel recommendations of someone who has never packed a suitcase, eaten street-side chaat, or faced a delayed flight? Radhika's creators think you can. According to Sudeep Subash, chief revenue officer at Collective Artists Network, 'She speaks multiple languages, never needs a visa, and doesn't take breaks. For brands and tourism boards, that's a dream. Plus, you can experiment with different styles, formats and tailor content for specific cities or festivals.' As for whether her recommendations are trustworthy, Sudeep shares, 'There is a team that reviews everything before it goes out. The effort to ensure authentic content is very human. But these personalities can analyse vast amounts of data for timely, location-specific recommendations.' While AI influencers don't need breaks, content creator Shubham Mansingka says crafting authentic guides through one's experience gives human influencers an edge. 'I once met some people who had used my Ladakh guide to figure out their trip. However, they did not know that I was the one who had written it! Such experiences can only occur with real people,' he notes. Influencer Shenaz Treasury echoes this sentiment and insists, 'Travel for me is meeting people and making real connections. AI cannot replicate stories that people have to share, and it only happens when you meet them physically.' Other AI influencers around the world Emma: A Germany-based interactive brand ambassador, introduced by the German National Tourist Board, to inspire potential visitors. She shares travel tips on Instagram, 'speaks' over 20 languages and answers people's queries like a chatbot. Thalasya: From Indonesia, this influencer has been around since 2018 and shares a mix of lifestyle and travel content, often with her virtual friend, Zeline. Sena Zaro: Also known as Sena Z (pictured above) was created by BRACAI and Cenizaro Hotels & Resorts to focus on sustainable travel guides.
