BJP keeps winning elections because Opposition is 'nakaam': Asaduddin Owaisi

India Today18-05-2025

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday said the BJP has been consistently winning elections across the country as it has consolidated the Hindu votes and that the Opposition is a failure (nakaam).Owaisi made the remarks when asked whether his party was the 'B-team' of the BJP, a charge repeatedly raised by opposition parties. He said that attempts to blame him were nothing but the Opposition's 'hatred' for his party, which largely represents Muslims.advertisement"The BJP is coming to power because the opposition is 'nakaam'. It is winning elections because it has consolidated almost 50 per cent of the Hindu votes," he told news agency PTI on Saturday. "How can you put the blame on me, tell me? If I contest in Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Kishanganj and a few other seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the BJP gets 240 seats, am I responsible?" he added.Opposition parties like the Congress have lashed out at Owaisi's attempts to grow his AIMIM outside its Hyderabad stronghold, alleging that he ends up benefitting the BJP by taking away a chunk of votes, mostly Muslims. However, the five-time Hyderabad MP hit back, accusing opposition parties of taking the Muslim votes for granted and paying little heed to their real concerns.advertisement"When every segment of society has a semblance of political leadership and that's acceptable to you, but you don't want Muslims to have a semblance of political voice, political leadership," he said.Asked if his remarks were aimed at the Congress, Owaisi said he was referring to all parties, including the BJP, Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP)."Yadav will be a leader, Musalmaan will be a beggar. Upper caste will be a leader, Musalmaan will be a beggar. How is that fair, tell me?" the AIMIM chief asked.Owaisi's remarks came at a time when he has earned accolades for his strong statements on Pakistan following the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. At the same time, he has drawn backlash from some people for his recent remarks.Notably, Owaisi is also a part of the seven all-party delegations that will visit partner countries to brief their governments on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and India's Operation Sindoor.During the PTI interview, Owaisi also underlined that Muslims have only 4 per cent participation in the legislatures and Parliament, despite the community being the largest minority group in the country with nearly 15 per cent of the population.advertisementHe asserted that India cannot achieve the 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) goal by 2047 by keeping such a large community marginalised and weak."Political parties should stop looking at Muslims as vote banks, and instead work to uplift them, educate them, treat them fairly and give them jobs. Our fight is that we don't want to remain voters. We want to be citizens," he said.Owaisi's attempts to emerge as a leader with an electoral appeal outside Hyderabad have met with some success as his party has won a few seats, especially those with a large Muslim population, in states like Bihar and Maharashtra in past elections. His unabashed championing of Muslim grievances and aspirations has won him admirers in the community across the country.(with inputs from PTI)Trending Reel

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee cut the repo rate by 50 basis points, lowering it from 6% to 5.5%. This is the third consecutive rate cut. Central banks usually reduce repo rates to stimulate economic growth by making borrowing cheaper for individuals and businesses. This translates to lower equated monthly instalments for borrowers. The RBI retained India's growth projection for the financial year 2025-'26 at 6.5% despite global uncertainties, with quarterly estimates unchanged. Read on. The Karnataka Police arrested four persons, including an official of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in connection with the stampede that took place outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Those arrested are Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of the cricket franchise, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran and Sumanth. This came after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that the state government had ordered the arrest of representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A first information report was filed against the persons based on a complaint alleging that criminal negligence had led to the stampede. Eleven persons had died and several were injured in the incident on Wednesday. Fans had gathered to celebrate the team's victory in the Indian Premier League. Read on. The Congress described the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line as an example of 'continuity in governance', which it claimed had not been acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his 'perennial desire for self-glory'. The statement came ahead of Modi inaugurating the Chenab bridge on Friday. The world's highest railway arch bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the project was sanctioned in March 1995 when Congress' PV Narasimha Rao was the prime minister and that it was declared a national project in 2002 by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The contract for the Chenab bridge was awarded in 2005, Ramesh said, adding that several segments of the project had been inaugurated by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.

Former Puducherry CM questions Speaker over projected cost of proposed Assembly complex

Former Puducherry Chief Minister and Congress leader V. Narayanasamy on Friday (June 6, 2025) questioned Speaker R. Selvam for projecting a huge sum of ₹675 crore for the government's proposal to build a new Assembly complex in the Union Territory (UT). 'The Speaker has projected such a high figure with ulterior motives. For the geographical size and present strength of the Assembly (30 elected and three nominated MLAs), the amount is disproportionately huge. Public money cannot be utilised for lavish expenditure. The projected amount could be used for public good,' he said, addressing a press conference in the UT. The Speaker had claimed that the Chief Secretary was putting obstacles in the way of the ₹675-crore project, he said, adding that Mr. Selvam had been pursuing the project for constructing a new Assembly complex since the day he assumed office. 'A few months after Mr. Selvam assumed office, he had told the media that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will lay the foundation for the complex. At that time, he had projected ₹300 crore for the Assembly complex and now, it has gone up to ₹675 crore. During our tenure, we had proposed the construction of a new Assembly at a cost of ₹200 crore, and many States in the Northeast have constructed new Assemblies for around ₹200 crore,' he said. He also questioned Mr. Selvam for his remarks that Chief Minister N. Rangasamy skipped the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi as he generally 'avoided' taking a flight. The Speaker had also said that on the day of NITI Aayog meeting, the Chief Minister had to 'perform puja' at his temple in Gorimedu. 'Mr. Selvam, as a representative of the CM, gave these two reasons for Mr. Rangasamy's absence from the NITI Aayog meeting. The reasons cited by the Speaker sound flimsy and are laughable. The Chief Minister has insulted the people of Puducherry by skipping such an important meeting, where he could have raised Statehood issue and other important subjects concerning the UT,' he said. Responding to Mr. Rangasamy's decision to skip a question on the future of AINRC-BJP alliance during a recent press conference, the Congress leader said Mr. Rangasamy seems disinterested in continuing the alliance with the BJP. 'If he decides to break the alliance with the BJP, the Chief Minister's AINRC will vanish from the political landscape of Puducherry. He will not have the courage to break the alliance,' he said. The Congress was fully prepared to face the next Assembly elections with confidence, he added.

Influencer Sharmishta Panoli Released From Jail After Court Relief

A day after getting an interim relief from the Calcutta High Court, social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli walked out of jail after she was arrested over a communally charged video linked to Operation Sindoor. The 22-year-old influencer from Kolkata was arrested on May 31 for communal remarks she made against a post that questioned India's military response after the Pahalgam terror attack. Ms Panoli was arrested in Gurugram last week after her Instagram post drew protests. The interim bail granted to the influencer yesterday came after the Kolkata police filed a case against Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of Ms Panoli. The man is facing arrest and is on the run. An Assam Police team reached Kolkata with an arrest warrant for Mr Qadri. The Assam Police filed a case against him earlier this week for posting content on social media that contained hate speech and derogatory remarks, which hurt religious sentiments. Ms Panoli's arrest sparked a political row, with the BJP and its allies targeting the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. She was produced in court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. She even received support from Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament and the leader of the right-wing Party for Freedom, who said the influencer's arrest is a "disgrace for freedom of speech" and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure she is freed.
