West Ham have £30m bid rejected for highly-rated Championship star - after Graham Potter identified midfielder as his top target
Hammers boss Graham Potter identified the 21-year-old as his top target as he looks to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season.
Relegated Saints turned down West Ham's opening offer, which is understood to be around half their valuation of the player.
It remains to be seen whether the Hammers will return with an improved bid with insiders acknowledging the two clubs' valuations are very different.
Fernandes came on as a second-half substitute in Southampton's dramatic victory over Wrexham on the opening day of the Championship season.
West Ham have strengthened their defensive line over the summer with the arrival of wing-back El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague for £19m and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Leicester City for £18m.
Getting at least one new midfielder is now the priority for Potter with the club also keen on Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey.
West Ham are yet to make a formal approach for the £40m-rated midfielder who Daily Mail Sport revealed is yet to be convinced by the idea of joining Villa's Premier League rivals.

Branthwaite had been attracting interest from several Premier League sides prior to signing a new contract at Everton this summer, and is seen as a key figure in David Moyes ' side ahead of their first season at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Fellow centre-back James Tarkowski underwent hamstring surgery earlier this summer and has been eased back into action over pre-season, with Jake O'Brien and Michael Keane also still on the books at the club. Moyes was already keen to add a new centre-back to his squad this summer prior to Branthwaite's injury, with the Scot still desperate for more faces to add to his squad after bringing in midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish. Speaking on the club's pre-season tour of the US, Moyes said: "We've got huge priorities as far as where we would like to try and buy the players if we could do. "But also, we've got a numbers situation as well, we're short in numbers, so there's a bit of both. We're trying to get the pieces we really want first, and that's what we've been fighting to do. So hopefully we can, hopefully things will fall into place. "But we're just beginning to think, my goodness, we're just not getting enough over the line. "Because we are actively working to try [and] it's not as if we're a club who are saying [that] we're waiting to sell a player before we can bring one in. But it's not really the situation. Jack Wilshere, 33, REJECTS Arsenal's offer of Under-21s manager as he holds out for first permanent senior role
JACK WILSHERE has opted against returning to Arsenal as an academy coach as he looks to pursue a senior manager role. The 33-year-old was previously the Gunners' U18s boss – guiding them to the FA Youth Cup final back in April 2023 before joining Norwich as an assistant coach in October 2024. 2 2 After leaving the Canaries by mutual consent back in April – having briefly been interim boss – Wilshere has been on the hunt for his next job, eyeing another EFL club to get his management career up and running. Arsenal are currently looking for a new U21s coach after losing Mehmet Ali to Brentford's backroom team, and Wilshere was approached for a Hale End return. Wilshere's role would have involved the U21s as well as a wider remit in player development. But now, Arsenal are believed to be close to permanently appointing Max Porter – the 39-year-old has been at the academy since 2017 and has been in interim charge of the U21s.
