New Twins OF Carson McCusker accidentally launches bat into left field during rainy matchup with Guardians
The rain got the best of Carson McCusker on Monday night.
McCusker stepped up to the plate in the second inning of the Minnesota Twins' matchup with the Cleveland Guardians as decent rain was falling at Target Field in Minneapolis. But when the right fielder went to swing at a pitch, well, McCusker completely lost control of the bat.
It wasn't just a little bit, either. McCusker sent his bat absolutely flying. The bat made it all the way into left field, where it calmly came to rest as everyone slowly realized what had happened. As Guardians players went to retrieve it, McCusker and the home plate umpire just stood there laughing.

Whoops.
To make the situation even better, McCusker had just been called up to the Twins from their Triple-A affiliate on Saturday. Monday was just his second game in the big leagues. But, to McCusker's credit, that very likely would've been a single had he actually made contact with the ball instead of trying to cut corners with his bat.
Eventually, McCusker struck out looking. The game was tied 1-1 at the time, but Willi Castro hit an RBI double later in the inning to put the Twins up by a run. By the end of the third inning, however, officials decided they had had enough and sent the game into a rain delay. The game was called off for the day and will resume on Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. CT, with Game 2 of the series to follow.
The Twins entered Monday's contest with a 26-21 record. They have won 13 of their last 14, too, after their impressive win streak came to an end on Sunday when the Milwaukee Brewers beat them, 5-2. The Guardians, on the other hand, came into Monday's game on a four-game losing skid.
While McCusker is hoping to get the hang of things with his new club, Monday's bat incident was an incredible way for him to kick off his time with the Twins.

Ronny Maurico hit his first home run of the season, a 456-foot shot into the second deck, Francisco Lindor had three hits and two stolen bases, and the New York Mets scored eight runs as they rolled past the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Jeff McNeil and Jared Young also homered, and Brandon Nimmo and Luis Torrens each drove in two runs in New York's 8-1 win -- a matchup of teams with the National League's best and worst records. The Mets, a season-high 17 games over .500 at 41-24, improved to 5-0 against the Rockies this season. The loss dropped Colorado to 12-52, matching the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the worst 64-game start to an MLB season since 1901. Clay Holmes (7-3) gave up nine hits in six innings, but just one earned run. He had six strikeouts and no walks. Maurico gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third with his homer, the longest hit by New York this season. David Zalubowski / AP Ryan McMahon hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Colorado's lone run. It snapped a 22-game homer drought for McMahon, who has 131 with the Rockies to pass Matt Holliday for 11th on the franchise's career list. Germán Márquez (2-8) allowed eight hits and four earned runs in five innings for Colorado, which has scored just 10 runs in its five losses to New York this season. Key moment Young's homer broke a 1-1 tie and kickstarted a two-run fifth for the Mets, who led the rest of the way. Key stat The Rockies' measly offensive output wasn't due to a lack of opportunities. Colorado went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Up next Rookie RHP Chase Dollander (2-5, 6.26 ERA) will take the mound for Colorado against RHP Tylor Megill (4-4, 3.77) and the Mets on Sunday.

Why United Center fell short of capacity crowd for Sky vs. Fever game
The post Why United Center fell short of capacity crowd for Sky vs. Fever game appeared first on ClutchPoints. The United Center fell short of a capacity crowd for the Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever game. However, this wasn't due to a lack of interest in the clash between these growing rivalries. Indiana dominated this matchup again winning 79-52 with Caitlin Clark out of the lineup. Unfortunately, the Sky lost Courtney Vandersloot early to a knee injury which may keep the legendary point guard out an extended period of time and clearly were rattled by that loss. Advertisement Despite the two shorthanded rosters, there were plenty in attendance on Saturday night. And Front Office Sports reporter Colin Salao confirmed why technically there was not a capacity crowd in the NBA arena. 'The Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever drew a sold out crowd of 19,496 fans to the first WNBA game in United Center. The arena normally fits close to 21,000, but there was ongoing construction that limited today's capacity, per @AnnieCostabile .' The Sky are trying to gain some momentum amid a difficult start to the season Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images The Sky now sit at 2-5 overall and are in third-last place in the league standings. No one could really get into a rhythm against a talented Fever defense, leading to Chicago shooting just 32% from the field and 20% from three-point range. This group has struggled on both ends to this point in the season, ranking third-last in offensive rating and last in defensive rating. Advertisement Turnovers were one of the main reasons the Fever were able to pull away, scoring 23 points off of the Sky's 19 turnovers. The face of the franchise, Angel Reese had another uneven performance scoring 4 points and recording 12 rebounds. The 23-year-old is off to a poor start, by her high standards, shooting just 31% from the field and recording 3.8 turnovers a game. That being said, it's certainly fair to give Reese the benefit of the doubt and expect her to grow into the season as she did last season. The star forward and Kamilla Cardoso are the two players the franchise is building around. As they continue to improve so will this team, however, other players will need to step up should Vandersloot be out a long time. The first player who comes to mind is rookie point guard Hailey Van Lith. The No. 11 pick from this year's WNBA Draft will surely get a lot more minutes going forward and needs to continue to get comfortable at this level. Van Lith did put up 7 points tonight but struggled with 3 turnovers and was a -26 on the floor. Overall, it's going to take time for these young players to reach their potential. The Sky might have to wait another season before they return to the playoffs but so long as their core continues to grow then this franchise's future should be bright.
