Workshop aims to boost governance in charitable sector

Kuwait Times24-07-2025
KUWAIT: The International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO), in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs, organized a specialized workshop on Tuesday titled 'Introduction to Compliance Management: Practical Applications' as part of its ongoing 'Tamkeen' initiative. The workshop aimed to strengthen the principles of governance and institutional compliance within Kuwait's charitable sector.
Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), IICO Deputy Director General and Head of the Tamkeen initiative Abdulrahman Al-Mutawa said the workshop reflects the organization's commitment to promoting a culture of integrity, transparency and sustainability. He noted that IICO was the first charitable institution in Kuwait to establish an independent compliance and governance department in 2022 — demonstrating a proactive approach to institutional development.
Al-Mutawa highlighted that the organization has successfully met all criteria of the institutional evaluation set by the Ministry of Social Affairs, including those related to organizational structure, risk management, governance and internal controls. He added that IICO continues to develop systems and policies aimed at achieving excellence in institutional performance.

He clarified that the workshop is part of a strategic roadmap to protect organizational reputation, minimize risks and enhance administrative efficiency in the charitable field. He also revealed plans to launch a new training program soon, which will certify 'compliance specialists' working in charitable societies in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs, providing them with the expertise needed to excel in the field.
For her part, Acting Director of the Department of Charitable Societies and Endowments at the Ministry of Social Affairs Iman Al-Enezi said the workshop is part of a broader strategic initiative to embed a culture of compliance and governance in charitable institutions. She noted that the Tamkeen initiative, launched in 2018, aims to qualify professionals working in the sector and adapt to ongoing administrative and technical developments.
Al-Enezi pointed out that since its inception, the initiative has conducted 46 training programs benefiting over 1,500 participants from various charitable organizations. She commended the efforts of IICO and the Tamkeen initiative, reaffirming the Ministry's commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance institutional performance in Kuwait's charitable and humanitarian sectors. The workshop was attended by senior officials from charitable associations and foundations, as well as representatives from the public sector, underscoring the joint efforts to prepare administrative cadres in line with international best practices. — KUNA

Kuwait Fund looks into progress on Lebanon projects amid visit

By Fawaz Al-Otaibi BEIRUT, Aug 11 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development's (KFAED) visit to Lebanon aims to follow up on the progress of development projects it is financing there, its acting chief said on Monday. These development projects are highly instrumental in keeping Lebanon's economy on an upward trajectory, Waleed Al-Bahar told KUNA amid a visit to the Lebanese capital Beirut, citing the improvement of infrastructure and basic services as the core goal the KFAED-funded projects. The KFAED acting chief went on to say that he intends on meeting a number of top Lebanese officials in a bid to bolster bilateral economic cooperation, subsequently serving the "best interests" of Kuwait and Beirut, he underlined. On talks with the visiting KFAED acting chief, Lebanon's Finance Minister Yassine Jaber spoke of the need to salvage some development projects that may have been hampered by long-standing civil unrest in Lebanon, hoping that some key projects funded by the Kuwait-based fund would come to fruition shortly. Kuwait sends 10 tons of food in first relief flight to Gaza

KUWAIT: Kuwait sent its first relief flight to Gaza on Sunday, delivering 10 tons of food supplies as part of a new airlift campaign aimed at easing the severe humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory. The flight departed from Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base and is headed to Al-Arish International Airport in Egypt, where the aid will be transferred safely into Gaza. This effort is part of a campaign organized by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) in cooperation with the Ministries of Social Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and Defense, with logistical support from the Kuwaiti Air Force. 'The launch of the Kuwaiti air bridge and the first relief flights to Gaza embody the efforts of official bodies following the high directives in the country to support our Palestinian brothers during their humanitarian hardships,' Fawaz Al-Mazrouei, Director General of the Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society, who accompanied the flight, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Kuwait's campaign comes as Gaza faces catastrophic conditions. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, at least 61,430 Palestinians have been killed in the Zionist entity's genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. This includes 217 who died from hunger — 100 of them children. The ministry also noted that 35 Palestinians were killed and over 304 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 1,778, with over 12,894 others wounded since May 27. Al-Mazrouei said the campaign reflects Kuwait's 'deep humanitarian vision and ongoing support for those in need worldwide.' Earlier this week, Kuwait's Ministry of Social Affairs announced that the nationwide donation campaign had raised KD 11.5 million. Funds are being used to purchase food and other essentials through the Kuwait Flour Mills Company, with KRCS overseeing procurement. Al-Mazrouei also highlighted continued coordination with the Egyptian and Palestinian Red Crescent societies to ensure aid reaches Gaza safely and that the most urgent needs are prioritized. He added that arrangements are underway with government bodies to add more flights in the coming days. 'The State of Kuwait, its leadership and people, stand with the brothers in times of crisis, consistent with its historic role as a center for humanitarian work,' he said. — Agencies
