Redressal on pending ORR project unlikely by July 31
'For PPP projects, it is mandatory to obtain consent from 70 per cent of the landowners and this hasn't happened in the case of the ORR project. The 3a notification issued is illegal,' he alleged.
'I have an RTI document that can prove that the project hasn't made any progress in the last two years and the government has no rights to acquire land,' he added.
Last December, the Centre had asked the state to revise the DPR by adding SGST exemptions and amendments to mining laws. The state submitted the revised DPR in January 2025. The I4,767 crore-worth ORR project is aimed at decongesting city traffic and improving connectivity to the Vizhinjam International Seaport.
'We met all authorities concerned and they have assured us to sort out the issues and start disbursal of compensation by next month. The PWD secretary informed us that the project will get the approval after the NHAI visit,' said Chandramohanan Nair, chairman, Outer Ring Road Vizhinjam-Navayikulam Janakeeya Samiti.

Karnataka caste survey
It has been full of twists, real and imagined. Caution had filled the April air as the Siddaramaiah regime dusted off Karnataka's 2015 caste survey report. Tense cabinet meets ensued, amid a feared backlash from the Lingayat-Vokkaliga caste duopoly. Meanwhile, a googly came from the Centre: on April 30, after years of holding out, it relented on including a national caste count in the 2026 census. The Congress claimed credit for forcing the U-turn, but soon made one of its own. Karnataka effectively junked the 2015 report. Instead, between September 22 and October 7, some 165,000 enumerators will fan out with handheld devices for a de novo sorting of the state's 70-odd million.

Mirwaiz showers rare praise on J&K MPs for highlighting ‘Kashmir plight' in Parliament
Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday (August 1, 2025) showered rare praise on Members of Parliament (MPs) from Jammu and Kashmir for highlighting 'peoples' plight' and urged the Centre to start 'engagement at all levels'. Seeking peace 'Neither war, nor violence, nor use of force can solve problems and lead to peace and prosperity, which the billions of people in the Indian subcontinent seek, and the swathes of poor in this region deserve. Engagement at all levels is a far cheaper and evolved alternative,' the Mirwaiz said, while delivering the Friday sermon at Srinagar's historic Jama Masjid. The Mirwaiz named and praised the three MPs from J&K — National Conference's Mian Altaf and Syed Aga Ruhullah along with Awami Ittehad Party's Engineer Rashid. He said the trio 'was the only ones to highlight the deep concerns and plight of the people at the epicentre of the basic problem and the current debate'. Critical in past The Mirwaiz's praise for the mainstream leaders is rare because, in the past, the separatists were always critical of their narratives. Referring to the ongoing proceedings of the Parliament, the Mirwaiz said, 'The three MPs from J&K spoke with passion and pain about the disempowerment and dispossession of the people of J&K. They expressed the sentiments of the people of J&K that we have all along been talking about. It is good to see that on these matters all are on the same page.' He said very few MPs, and mostly in the Opposition, talked of the human aspect of war and its costs therein, and its correlation to J&K, which 'reflects the mindset and mood of the times'. He hoped that the MPs' lament about the Kashmir situation 'will be heard by those in power in New Delhi'. 'If they really want to lessen 'dil ki doori', they must pay heed to it,' he added.

Centre to withdraw order granting release of film Udaipur files, Delhi HC told
The Centre on Friday (August 1, 2025) informed the Delhi High Court that it was withdrawing its decision granting nod to the release of the film Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, and will take a decision on the revision petitions 'afresh'. The court, which was hearing two pleas challenging the Centre's decision allowing the release of the movie, directed the parties to appear before the government on August 4 and make their submissions. The court was informed by the counsel for the film's producer that the movie is scheduled to be released on August 8 and they would take some time for making arrangements for releasing it by engaging the theatres. The court took on record statement by Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Central government as also the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), that the government will withdraw the earlier decision granting nod to the release of the film and 'take a decision on the revision petitions preferred by the petitioners afresh'. Noting the submissions, the court disposed of the two petitions filed by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, and Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani. The Centre's counsel had said the film has undergone a two-step filter, first by the censor board, which suggested 55 cuts, and second by the committee, which further asked for six cuts, totalling 61 cuts. Javed's counsel objected to the release of the film on the ground that it would prejudice his case during the trial. Kanhaiya Lal, an Udaipur-based tailor in Rajasthan, was murdered in 2022, allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, for sharing a social media post in support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma after her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
