Burjeel Holdings acquires the Medeor Hospital building in Bur Dubai

Arabian Business5 hours ago

Healthcare provider Burjeel Holdings has acquired the Medeor 24×7 Hospital building, located near BurJuman Centre in Bur Dubai for AED170 million ($46.3 million).
The Medeor 24×7 Hospital served as a trusted community healthcare provider in Bur Dubai for over a decade. Prior to the acquisition, it was operated under a long-term lease agreement, the company said in a statement.
The remaining fixed rental commitment was of approximately AED343 million ($93.4 million) over the next 15 years. The strategic transaction eliminates that significant liability and replaces it with asset ownership in a high-performing and strategically located facility.

The hospital's infrastructure is already optimised for efficient healthcare delivery and supports potential upgrades such as day surgeries and specialty clinics.
By securing full control of the hospital, Burjeel Holdings will ensure uninterrupted operations and avoid the risks and costs associated with relocation. It also enhances operational flexibility, allowing for future expansion, reconfiguration, and diversification of services without the landlord's restrictions.
This acquisition aligns with Burjeel's long-term strategy to enhance operational control, reduce fixed lease liabilities, and reinforce its asset base in strategic locations.
The hospital's location and strong patient volumes align with Burjeel Holdings' regional growth objectives, as it prioritises an increased presence across Dubai and the Northern Emirates, regions with strong demographic demand and high potential for scalable service delivery.
John Sunil, CEO of Burjeel Holdings, commented: 'This acquisition reflects our disciplined capital strategy and commitment to long-term value creation. By transitioning from leasehold to ownership in a key market, we reinforce our operational resilience and strengthen our platform for growth.
'Dubai, along with the Northern Emirates, remains a central focus of our expansion strategy, and securing full control of this asset enables us to deepen our presence and better serve these high-demand markets.'
Established in 2015, Medeor 24×7 Hospital is a multi-specialty hospital, offering a wide range of services, including mother and childcare, congenital malformation surgeries of the brain and spine, cardiology and various speciality surgeries. The hospital also houses a College of American Pathologists-accredited laboratory.

Fewer babies in Botswana acquire Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) thanks to dedicated push to eliminate mother to child transmission

Eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV is possible. And Botswana is celebrating becoming the first country in Africa – and the first country with a high burden of HIV - to be awarded a Gold Tier status by the World Health Organization (WHO), for its efforts to eliminate vertical transmission of HIV completely. This is a huge accomplishment for a country with one of the most severe HIV epidemics in the world, which in 1999 had an estimated HIV prevalence among adults as high as 30%. Women living with HIV who do not receive antiretroviral (ARV) medicine have a 15–45% chance of transmitting the virus to their children during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding. That risk drops to less than 5% if treatment is given to both mothers and children throughout the stages when transmission can occur. According to UNAIDS' Spectrum report 2024, around 360,000 people are currently living with HIV in Botswana, with 98% of pregnant women living with HIV receiving treatment. Vertical transmission has dropped to just 1.2%, resulting in fewer than 100 infants being born with HIV in 2023. The goal is to reach zero. The Path to an HIV-free Botswana The Triple Elimination Initiative, led by WHO, in close collaboration with UNICEF and UNAIDS, aims to halt vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, by encouraging countries to integrate services to improve the health of mothers and children. In May 2025, Botswana's Gold Tier status on the Path to Elimination of HIV, was unanimously agreed by the global validation committee, which assesses programme interventions, laboratory services, engagement of Civil Society Organisations and evaluates data against a set of elimination criteria. The attainment of 'Gold tier' status by Botswana can be attributed to several high impact initiatives: Pioneering interventions over the years, such as the early adoption of Option B+ (lifelong treatment for all pregnant and breastfeeding women with HIV), free antiretroviral therapy for all, including non-citizens since 2019, and decentralisation of services through District Health Management Teams. Digitising data collection systems with the Open Medical Record System (Open-MRS); Championing the empowerment of community health workers (CHWs) through increased training; Strong government leadership, including committing domestic resources. Embracing the crucial importance of Civil Society Organisations, which engage communities in reducing stigma and violence, testing partners and encouraging adherence to PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and treatment; Support from 2gether 4 SRHR 2gether 4 SRHR is a joint UN Regional Programme, in partnership with Sweden, which brings together the combined efforts of UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all people in Eastern and Southern Africa. The regional validation secretariat of the Triple Elimination Initiative includes the same UN agencies, which continue to support Botswana through its validation process, with funding support from 2gether 4 SRHR. In phase one of the programme (2018-2023), Botswana was supported as the first country globally to apply for the Path to Elimination of HIV. To meet these rigorous data requirements, 2gether 4 SRHR established a data mentorship programme, aiming to build the capacity of Ministries of Health across the region, to analyse and use data to prove progress on the path to elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Countries including Botswana also received financial support from 2gether 4 SRHR to develop HIV Prevention Roadmaps. These evidence-based, people-centred, HIV prevention plans focus on reducing new infections and ensuring long-term sustainability of prevention programming which can withstand funding shocks. Botswana was also one of ten countries to develop action plans to engage men in HIV prevention and leveraged the existing 'Brothers Arise' #Nanogang campaign, to work with men to increase their uptake of HIV services and create male friendly platforms to discuss norms. In consultation with the Ministry of Health, a guide for best practice services for men and boys is now in use. This major milestone should be celebrated not only in Botswana, but across the Region. With 2.6 million new HIV infections in children averted since 2010, the 57% decline in new HIV infections among children in Eastern and Southern Africa is one of the top global public health achievements in decades. Botswana demonstrates that an AIDS-free generation is possible. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of UNFPA - East and Southern Africa.

5th RetrofitTech and Sustainable Buildings Summit drives Abu Dhabi's net zero ambitions

Abu Dhabi: The 5th RetrofitTech and Sustainable Buildings Summit, held under the patronage of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) and co-hosted by TAQA Energy Services, successfully concluded this week, reaffirming Abu Dhabi's commitment to sustainable development, energy efficiency, and circular economy practices. As the region's leading platform for advancing retrofitting and sustainable building solutions, the summit convened key stakeholders, including government officials, developers, infrastructure experts, and technology providers. Participating entities included ADNOC Distribution, Department of Education and Knowledge, and Masdar City, alongside senior representatives from DOE, TAQA Energy Services and a number of strategic partners. The event provided a critical forum to discuss strategies aligned with the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Strategy 2030, spotlighting innovative retrofitting technologies, green building practices, and policy frameworks to accelerate progress toward the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative targets. A key theme throughout the summit was the importance of fostering a year-round sustainable community lifestyle, supported by scalable, data-driven solutions and multi-sector collaboration. Khalid Mohamed Al Qubaisi, Chief Executive Officer, TAQA Energy Services, said: 'Our participation at the RetrofitTech and Sustainable Buildings Summit Abu Dhabi 2025 reflects our ongoing commitment to driving energy efficiency and sustainability across the emirate. We are actively developing more projects across strategic sectors: industrial, educational, healthcare, and government - reinforcing our role in advancing Abu Dhabi's vision for a more efficient, future-ready built environment'. Eng. Mohamed Al-Hadrami, Energy & Water Performance Efficiency Director at DoE, commented: "Retrofitting buildings in the Emirate is a foundational element of our endeavors to enhance energy efficiency and environmental sustainability." He indicated that "these projects are set to achieve total electricity savings estimated at about 220 gigawatt-hours throughout 2025, accompanied by an increase in the number of buildings undergoing retrofitting from 200 in 2025 to 300 by 2026." Al-Hadrami also stated: "One of the most notable achievements was the approximately 185 gigawatt-hours in energy savings delivered in 2024 by 'TAQA Energy Services,' part of the 'TAQA' group, and other private energy service companies. This represents a saving of about 37 million dirhams in direct costs for commercial and governmental entities." He indicated that "the momentum is being maintained with commercial sector projects aiming to achieve savings of over 100 GWh. This will be accomplished by concentrating on building retrofitting operations, for example, the replacement of large-scale air conditioning systems, with these projects expected to commence generating significant savings by 2026." Al-Hadrami detailed: "The Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy 2030 embraces an ambitious outlook, with the goal of achieving a tenfold increase in the number of retrofitted buildings by 2030. This aligns with the Emirate's commitment to sustainability and to elevating the efficiency of power and water usage across all sectors." He further explained, "Retrofitting buildings is instrumental in lessening the environmental footprint, supporting the flexibility of the local economy, and advancing the quality of life for society." Day one of the summit featured a keynote address by Mohamed Al Hadhrami, in which he emphasised on the pivotal role of retrofitting in reducing energy consumption, lowering emissions, and improving the environmental performance of Abu Dhabi's building stock. During the second day, an in-depth workshop was held for public sector stakeholders, focused on compliance with green building regulations, strategies for retrofitting existing assets, and elevating performance against ESG metrics. Experts shared actionable insights on integrating circular economy principles, aligning with regulatory mandates, and embedding sustainability into institutional operations to drive long-term value. The summit solidified Abu Dhabi's position as a regional leader in sustainable innovation and development. It served as a catalyst for actionable change, that aims to mobilise stakeholders to prioritise energy efficiency and green practices across the public and private sectors.
