UN-Habitat presidency poised to boost global standing
Senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara's Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies Dr Mazlan Che Soh, who disclosed this, said the prestigious role would enable Malaysia to showcase its sustainable development model and serve as an example to others.
'As UN-Habitat president, Malaysia will have the opportunity to influence the direction of global policies in urbanisation, affordable housing, disaster management and climate change.
'The role will also enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation with UN agencies, member states and NGOs in implementing sustainability-driven projects,' he said, Bernama reported.
Mazlan said the appointment also enabled Malaysia to become a leading voice for developing countries in sustainable urbanisation, social equity and inclusive development.
He said Malaysia could also leverage its presidency to spearhead regional cooperation in building resilient, inclusive and smart cities, as well as create a regional centre of excellence.
Mazlan highlighted Malaysia's strong commitment to the sustainability agenda, including the introduction of the Second National Urbanisation Policy, which emphasises inclusivity, environmental responsibility, resilience and smart technologies.
'The Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 promotes inclusive economic growth, balanced regional development and environmental conservation while under the 12th Malaysia Plan, the Sustainable Development Goals have been integrated into national development planning,' he added.
He pointed out that several policies had also been developed in line with global sustainability principles, including the National Environmental Policy and National Policy on Climate Change.
On Friday, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that Malaysia's presidency was unanimously approved by 193 member states at the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya.
Set up in 1975 and elevated to a full programme by the UN General Assembly in 2001, the UN-Habitat Assembly is the highest global decision-making body when it comes to sustainable urbanisation and human settlements.
It convenes every four years and plays a crucial role in shaping global policies on cities and communities.
As president, Malaysia will work closely with the UN-Habitat Executive Board and global partners to strengthen multilateral cooperation, promoting inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable cities worldwide.

Failure to resolve Gaza crisis starkly exposes UN flaws
The genocide in Gaza epitomises a systematic failure of the United Nations to act as the world's leading institution responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The Gaza tragedy also lays bare the imminent collapse of the multilateral system. Multilateralism has given way to unilateralism that breeds protectionist policies. The failure to punish the perpetrators of the genocide in Gaza has made the UN an object of ridicule. The tragedy in Gaza exposes not only Israel's total disregard for human life and disrespect for humanitarian law, but also exposes the ineffectiveness of the UN as a multilateral institution, most blatantly due to the paralysis in the Security Council. This impasse has been building for decades. However, the tragedy in Gaza is not merely the failure of five powerful states with veto powers, or the P5. The other members of the UN (188 of them) must also be held accountable. There are mechanisms within the UN system that would allow the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to act on a threat to international peace — as in today's Gaza. These include the Uniting for Peace Resolution (Resolution 377.V) when the Security Council is unable to act due to a veto by a permanent member. This resolution allows the UNGA to recommend collective measures and it has been used a few times, including to address the Korean crisis in 1950 and Congo in 1960. Blaming the five permanent members for its failure to resolve the Gaza problem does not absolve the members of the UNGA from their responsibility. They, too, must find ways to solve the problem, including mechanisms outside the UN system. The US veto against all UN resolutions on Israel's actions in Gaza gives Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a free hand to "finish the job against Hamas". America siding with Israel should be a wake-up call for the Global South. They must realise that the UN is almost powerless when an armed conflict involves an ally of a state with veto power. UN Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire or an end to the starvation in Gaza has been vetoed by the US not once or twice but multiple times. Many other UN members are also responsible for the inaction. They have been content to issue only statements while avoiding the hard choices, such as cutting diplomatic and economic ties with Israel and other complicit powers. Under the UN Charter, UNGA resolutions are non-binding and have only moral authority. The impasse in the Security Council exposes a gap between the UN's moral promise and its political reality. Malaysia champions sustainable urban growth as ASEAN Chair
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reinforced its leadership in driving sustainable urban development across ASEAN, urging enhanced collaboration among cities to address housing, infrastructure and waste management challenges. (AFP pic) WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was nominating state department spokesperson Tammy Bruce as the next US deputy representative to the UN. Bruce has been the state department spokesperson since Trump took office in January. In a post on social media in which Trump announced her nomination, the president said she did a 'fantastic job' as state department spokesperson. Bruce will need to be confirmed for the role by the US Senate, where Trump's Republican party holds a majority. During press briefings, she has defended the Trump administration's foreign policy decisions ranging from an immigration crackdown and visa revocations to US responses to Russia's war in Ukraine and Israel's war in Gaza, including a widely condemned armed private aid operation in the Palestinian territory. Bruce was previously a political contributor and commentator on Fox News for over 20 years. She has also authored books like 'Fear Itself: Exposing the Left's Mind-Killing Agenda' that criticised liberals and left-leaning viewpoints. In a post after Trump's announcement, Bruce thanked him and suggested that the role was 'a few weeks' away. Neither Trump nor Bruce mentioned an exact timeline in their online posts. 'Now I'm blessed that in the next few weeks my commitment to advancing America First leadership and values continues on the global stage in this new post,' Bruce wrote on X. Trump has picked former White House national security adviser Mike Waltz to be his UN envoy. Waltz's Senate confirmation for that role, wherein he will be Bruce's boss, is still due. Waltz was Trump's national security adviser until he was ousted on May 1 after he was caught up in a March scandal involving a Signal chat among top Trump national security aides on military strikes in Yemen. Trump then nominated Waltz as his UN ambassador.
