Subsidised LPG cylinders for F&B micro traders continue with rakyat prices
Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, clarified that vendors providing reasonably priced services need not worry about losing subsidies.
This assurance comes as part of amendments to the Supply Control Regulations (Amendment) 2021 (PPKB (Amendment) 2021). Feedback sessions on the proposal will run from tomorrow until October 31, when Op Gasak concludes.
'Unlike the previous regulation, which restricted subsidised LPG cylinder use to 42kg at any time, the new amendment considers the needs of micro and small F&B traders,' Armizan said during a press conference.
He added that the amendment also introduces stricter control mechanisms to prevent subsidy misuse, including smuggling and misappropriation.
Earlier, Armizan met with Sabah F&B trader associations to gather input on the proposed changes.
He stressed that feedback from small traders is vital for effective risk management to curb subsidy leaks.
The minister highlighted cases where subsidised LPG was bought in bulk, with portions diverted for resale at higher prices.
'We must establish stronger controls,' he said, urging trader associations to submit proposals directly to the ministry.
A technical committee will also review 'rakyat prices' for consumers, using cost-of-living data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia as a benchmark.
Separately, Armizan addressed recent price hikes by ice manufacturers and frozen food producers in Peninsular Malaysia, demanding explanations for the increases.
'We will assess whether these changes comply with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act,' he said.

Debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, Matbali opened his speech by recalling the incident that claimed the teenager's life at her school last month. He said the case not only brought immense grief to Zara Qairina's family in Sipitang but also sparked deep concern across the country. 'This is not just sad news — it is a powerful wake-up call for all of us,' he said. 'It raises serious questions about how far we have truly safeguarded the safety of our children in educational institutions. If bullying was indeed involved, then this is no longer a matter of discipline — it is an act of violence that claimed a life,' he added, speaking with visible emotion. This is the second time Matbali has raised the issue in Parliament, having previously brought it up during the debate on the Education (Amendment) Bill 2025 on July 30. He called on the government to take proactive and transparent action to address the case, stressing that a dedicated anti-bullying law must be enacted without delay. 'Let there be clear guidelines, protection for victims and whistleblowers, and firm action against perpetrators,' he said. Matbali also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Federal Government, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the State Government, as well as all concerned parties, for their condolences and firm commitment to resolving Zara Qairina's case transparently and thoroughly. During the debate, Matbali called for Sipitang District to have a modern, advanced health complex to cater to the needs of over 35,000 residents. He expressed hope the proposal would be made a key development project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), noting Sipitang's size of 2,437 sq km — equivalent to the entire state of Melaka. 'I hope my proposal will be given serious consideration, in line with efforts to upgrade Sipitang Hospital into a specialist hospital in the future. This also matches the district's geostrategic location bordering Labuan and Sarawak, and along the international route to Brunei Darussalam and Kalimantan, Indonesia,' he said. Matbali said several health clinics around Sipitang — including Sindumin (19.6km away), Mendulong, Meligan, and Long Pasia (115km) — could use the health complex as a patient referral centre, reducing the need to send patients to Beaufort or Kota Kinabalu. He also reiterated concerns over the unfinished Pan Borneo Highway project along the Sipitang–Beaufort stretch, calling on the Works Ministry to act immediately. 'This road no longer makes travel easier; it has made things worse and has contributed to several accidents. According to official statistics, there were 16 accidents reported along this stretch from January to July this year, compared to 23 cases for the whole of last year,' he said. Matbali further highlighted stalled upgrades to Jalan Mentulud, Jalan Mendulong, and the road from Kampung Mendulong to Kampung Meligan. Other issues raised included the need for electricity in remote areas such as Kg Long Pasia, Long Mio, Meligan, Ulu Bole and Iburu, which still rely on generators, and the 'three-in-one' problem of flooding, riverbank erosion, and siltation in the constituency. 'Flooding often occurs in Pekan Sindumin, especially in Kg Skim Sindumin and Tanjung Nipis, reaching water levels up to 1.5 metres due to overflow from Sungai Mengalong,' he said, adding that riverbank erosion along Sungai Padas in Beaufort and siltation at the mouth of Sungai Sipitang were worsening navigation and flood risks.

Proposal to separate AG and public prosecutor roles to be tabled in cabinet
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that a proposal to separate the roles of Attorney General and Public Prosecutor will be presented to the Cabinet by the end of August. This move is part of the MADANI Government's legal reform agenda, implemented within two and a half years in office. 'This separation has long been demanded, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) will table it to the Cabinet at the end of this month,' Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat. He was responding to a question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) regarding outdated laws under review and their implementation timeline. Anwar noted that the government has introduced 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments. Key reforms include amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act and the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023. Other significant changes include the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 and the Ombudsman Bill 2025. 'I must emphasise that this record over two and a half years has yet to be matched by any previous administration,' Anwar said. The Prime Minister highlighted that five new acts were introduced and 34 amended in 2023. In 2024, another five new acts were enacted and 57 amended. This year, four new acts have been passed, with six amended and two new bills introduced. On anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar stated he supports strengthening the current legislation. He recalled proposing stricter anti-defection laws as Opposition Leader, which were not included in the Federal Constitution (Amendment) (No. 3) Act 2022. KPDN targeting 100,000 new price catcher users by year-end
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) aims to attract at least 100,000 new users to the Price Catcher application by year-end, adding to the more than 552,000 downloads recorded so far. Its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh expressed confidence that the target could be achieved, noting that the Price Catcher application, introduced in 2019 as a price comparison platform, has proven highly useful in helping users make informed decisions when purchasing daily necessities. She said that of the total number of registered users, only 62 per cent actively used the application, indicating that awareness of the Price Catcher platform remains low. 'I believe there are several factors contributing to this, including consumer habits, but the entire responsibility should not rest on consumers alone. Advocacy is a shared responsibility involving the ministry, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), consumers, and the community as a whole. 'It cannot be assumed that consumers are unaware simply because they do not want to know. It is the responsibility of all parties to ensure greater awareness of the application's use,' she said in an exclusive interview with Bernama recently. In this regard, Fuziah said KPDN continues to enhance the application to help consumers better understand the pricing of goods and use it as a tool for making informed purchasing decisions. 'We cannot control all prices, as we operate in a free market economy where prices are determined by supply and demand. However, consumers still have the power to choose. She added that KPDN is also actively promoting the application through consumer advocacy initiatives such as the Buy Malaysian Goods Carnival, KPDN Tour, MADANI Rakyat Programme, and Rahmah Sales, among others. 'The Price Catcher advocacy booth and exhibition are open to the public for inquiries and assistance in downloading the application. KPDN also provides briefings on the application during its programmes,' she said. Commenting on the main challenges in keeping the application updated to ensure consumers receive the latest price information, Fuziah said one issue is that some premises change their prices after monitoring has been carried out. 'These price changes depend on the business strategy of each premises. Some adjust their prices daily or twice a week, while others vary them based on the type of goods, such as fresh produce, which is often sold at higher prices. She explained that price monitoring officers (PPH) conduct checks at wet markets early in the morning and update prices before 10 am, while monitoring at supermarkets is carried out according to their operating hours, with prices updated before noon. In addition, Fuziah said another challenge is when monitored goods are not available on the shelves during inspections, resulting in no prices being recorded or displayed in the application. 'Despite these challenges, our monitoring shows that price changes are usually not significant, and the Price Catcher application can still guide consumers on the prevailing prices of goods for that day. On the method of collecting price data, Fuziah said it is done through sampling, as monitoring every premise in Malaysia would require extensive manpower and incur high costs. She added that the ministry currently has only 880 price monitoring officers, a number that needs to be increased given that 2,204 premises are being monitored at present. - Bernama
