Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan takes charge as Vice Chief of Naval Staff
After assuming the charge, he visited the National War Memorial in the national capital, where he laid flower wreaths to pay tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country.
Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988 and specialises in gunnery and missile systems. He has completed higher military education from Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), Naval War College (Goa) and National Defence College (New Delhi).
Vatsayan's Command assignments include a Coast Guard IPV, Missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and Guided Missile Frigate INS Sahyadri (commissioning crew).
His staff assignments include Joint Director of Personnel, Director of Personnel (Policy), Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning) and Principal Director Naval Plans. He relinquished the appointment of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Policy Planning and Force Development (PP and FD), HQ IDS.
He held key strategic and policy positions at the Naval Headquarters as Joint Director and Director (Personnel Policy), Director (Naval Plans - Perspective Plan) and Principal Director (Naval Plans).
After promotion to flag rank in February 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), and then commanded the Eastern Fleet. For his outstanding leadership and service, he was conferred with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in the year 2021.
According to the Navy, he later became Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy. In December 2021, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command.
In this role, he managed operational readiness, manpower development and infrastructure upgrading. Before becoming Joint Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) and then DCIDS (Policy, Planning and Force Development) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, where he contributed significantly to the formulation of policies promoting tri-army operational coordination, integration, force structure development and indigenisation.
Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff and all ranks HQ IDS, congratulated the Admiral and wished him the best of luck in his future role as the VCNS.

State deploys ‘Gaja Mitras' to tackle human-jumbo conflicts
1 2 Guwahati: In a decisive move to address the escalating human-elephant conflict, the state govt has launched the Gaja Mitra initiative, deploying rapid response teams across 80 conflict zones in eight districts. These teams, comprising local villagers, will be active during the peak winter season, aiming to curb the alarming rates of human and elephant fatalities. The 80 identified human-elephant conflict "hotspots" are in eight districts — Goalpara, Udalguri, Nagaon, Baksa, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath. Assam has witnessed over 1,400 human and 1,209 elephant deaths from such conflicts between 2000 and 2023, marking one of the highest tolls nationwide. The initiative follows a critical report from the Wildlife Institute of India, highlighting a crisis driven by habitat loss, electrocution, railway accidents, and retaliatory killings. The scheme focuses on voluntary, community-driven surveillance and response, ensuring that those most familiar with the landscape and patterns of elephant movement can respond quickly and effectively. The official added that to discourage elephants from entering villages and farmlands, the scheme includes the creation and restoration of local elephant habitats stocked with their preferred food, such as bamboo and Napier grass. Apart from the Gaja Mitra scheme, NFR is carrying out the installation of an AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines so that the speed of the trains can be controlled to protect the elephants. The Habaipur-Lumding section and the Kamakhya-Mirza section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) are the two sections where the Railways have completed the installation of the AI-enabled IDS and started its operation to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines. Lt Gen V Sreehari Assumes Command of Dakshin Bharat Area
Secunderabad: The Indian Army is reaffirming its commitment to strong leadership in protecting national integrity and maintaining operational readiness in the southern region. In this context, Lieutenant General V. Sreehari, AVSM, SC, SM, has taken over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dakshin Bharat Area, which includes Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep. A distinguished alumnus of Sainik School Amaravati Nagar, the National Defence Academy in Khadakvasla, and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Lt Gen Sreehari was commissioned into the 16 Sikh Light Infantry on June 13, 1987. In August 1992, he joined the elite Parachute Regiment and subsequently commanded the Para Special Forces Battalion during Operation RAKSHAK. He has led various units in challenging environments, including the Siachen Glacier, a Strike Corps Infantry Brigade, and a Mountain Division in the Northeast. In addition to his operational roles, Lt Gen Sreehari served in a United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and held important instructional positions at the Junior Leaders Wing in Belgaum and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. Throughout his career, Lt Gen Sreehari has occupied high-level staff positions, including Director General of Recruiting, Director General of Manpower Planning and Personnel Services at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), Major General of General Staff at Eastern Command, and Deputy Inspector General of Personnel at the Directorate General of Assam Rifles.
