The flag officer, after his appointment, paid solemn homage to the brave hearts who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation, by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Pune, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan was commissioned into the Navy on January 1, 1988. A specialist in gunnery and missile systems, he has held a wide range of command, operational and staff assignments over his distinguished naval career spanning more than three decades. At sea, he has served onboard various frontline warships, including as the commissioning crew of the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mysore, INS Nishank and pre-commissioning crew of Coast Guard OPV CGS Sangram. He also served as the executive officer of INS Mysore. He has commanded the coast guard ship C-05, the missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, the missile corvette INS Kuthar and the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri as the commissioning commanding officer. In February 2020, he took over as the flag officer commanding the eastern fleet, and led numerous operational deployments and exercises during a time of heightened maritime activity, post events at Galwan. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Naval War College in Goa and the prestigious National Defence College in New Delhi, Vatsayan has also excelled in key strategic and policy-oriented staff roles. His appointments at the Indian Naval Headquarters include the joint director and director of personnel (Policy), director naval plans (perspective planning) and principal director naval plans. On promotion to the Flag rank in February 2018, he served as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) prior to commanding the eastern fleet of the Navy. For his exceptional leadership and meritorious service of very high order, he was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2021. Thereafter, he served as the Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy and later, in December 2021, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC). In this capacity, he steered ENC's operational readiness, personnel development and infrastructure augmentation. Prior to taking over as the VCNS, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS) – Operations and thereafter, as DCIDS (Policy, Plans and Force Development) at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), where he played a key role in coordination of operations, enhancing integration, jointness, force development and framing policies promoting indigenisation across the three defence services. Upon assuming office, the Vice Admiral paid homage to fallen personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The Indian Navy stated that Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, and has held a broad spectrum of command, operational and staff appointments over a distinguished naval career spanning more than three decades. At sea, he has served on board several frontline warships, including the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, INS Nishank, and was part of the pre-commissioning crew of Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel CGS Sangram, among other assignments. In February 2020, he assumed command as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and oversaw several operational deployments and exercises during a period of heightened maritime activity following the events at Galwan. Following his promotion to Flag Rank in February 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) before taking over command of the Eastern Fleet. Before assuming charge as the VCNS, he served as Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS) – Operations, and subsequently as DCIDS (Policy, Plans and Force Development) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In these roles, he was closely involved in operational coordination, advancing integration and jointness among the Services, shaping force development, and formulating policies to promote indigenisation.

Sanjay Vatsayan Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan on Friday assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) Expert in Gunnery and Missile system, Vatsayan has had an illustrious career spanning over three decades where he has led various diverse array of command, operational, and staff appointments. Who is Sanjay Vatsayan? Vatsyan is an alumnus of several premier military institutions, including the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; Naval War College, Mumbai, and the National Defence College, New Delhi. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. He is an expert in Gunnery and Missile systems with vast experience at sea and ashore. Vatsayan has commanded a range of naval platforms, including the Indian Coast Guard Inshore Patrol Vessel, missile vessels Vibhuti and Nashak, the guided-missile corvette Kuthar, and served as the commissioning Commanding Officer of the indigenously built stealth frigate Sahyadri. He has also held key appointments such as Joint Director of Personnel, Director of Personnel (Policy), Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning), and Principal Director Naval Plans at Integrated Headquarters, ministry of defence (IHQ MoD) (Navy). He was appointed as the assistant chief of the Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) on promotion to the Flag Rank in February 2018. Vatsayan also commanded the Eastern fleet in Vishakapatnam from February 2020 to February 2021. Before his promotion to Vice Admiral and appointment as Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command (ENC), he served as Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at the National Defence Academy.

New Delhi: Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) on Friday. After assuming the charge, he visited the National War Memorial in the national capital, where he laid flower wreaths to pay tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country. Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988 and specialises in gunnery and missile systems. He has completed higher military education from Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), Naval War College (Goa) and National Defence College (New Delhi). Vatsayan's Command assignments include a Coast Guard IPV, Missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and Guided Missile Frigate INS Sahyadri (commissioning crew). His staff assignments include Joint Director of Personnel, Director of Personnel (Policy), Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning) and Principal Director Naval Plans. He relinquished the appointment of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Policy Planning and Force Development (PP and FD), HQ IDS. He held key strategic and policy positions at the Naval Headquarters as Joint Director and Director (Personnel Policy), Director (Naval Plans - Perspective Plan) and Principal Director (Naval Plans). After promotion to flag rank in February 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), and then commanded the Eastern Fleet. For his outstanding leadership and service, he was conferred with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in the year 2021. According to the Navy, he later became Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy. In December 2021, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command. In this role, he managed operational readiness, manpower development and infrastructure upgrading. Before becoming Joint Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) and then DCIDS (Policy, Planning and Force Development) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, where he contributed significantly to the formulation of policies promoting tri-army operational coordination, integration, force structure development and indigenisation. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff and all ranks HQ IDS, congratulated the Admiral and wished him the best of luck in his future role as the VCNS.
