Kota Kinabalu: Schools in Sabah must never cover up incidents of bullying, said State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Mohd Arif, who is also in charge of Sabah's education matters. 'This is the official stance of the Ministry of Education. It is neither appropriate nor acceptable to hide what occurs in any school, particularly when it concerns the welfare and safety of students,' he said, after visiting Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student of Sekolah Menengah Agama (SMA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, Papar, on Monday. Dr Mohd Arifin said this amid public calls for transparency in the investigations and social media claims of parents pulling out their kids from the school after the incident. Dr Mohd Arifin who visited Zara with Director-General of Education at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, reiterated the State's commitment to fully support the authorities in investigating the death. 'Let's allow the investigation to take its course. We must wait for the outcome of the thorough official findings,' he said. Asked about the presence of surveillance systems at the school, he said CCTV is typically installed in schools and that he plans to visit the school soon. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Four students suspended, 14 warned after viral school fight in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Four students have been suspended and 14 others issued warning letters following a violent school fight that went viral on social media. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated the disciplinary actions align with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) procedures to maintain school safety. The incident, recorded at a Kuala Lumpur secondary school, sparked widespread public concern. Fadhlina emphasised that the ministry takes a firm stance against behaviour threatening school security. 'The suspended students will undergo community service programmes arranged by the District Education Office as part of their rehabilitation process. Counselling sessions will also be provided to guide them towards positive behavioural change,' she said in a Facebook post. The ministry's response highlights its commitment to enforcing discipline while supporting student rehabilitation. Authorities continue monitoring school environments to prevent similar incidents. - Bernama

Sean Combs' lawyers offer US$50m bail to move him to house arrest

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Filepic by Reuters WASHINGTON: Lawyers for rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs ( pic ) filed a motion seeking his release from jail ahead of his sentencing in October, offering a US$50 million bail package that would place him under house arrest in Miami, reported German Press Agency (dpa). The attorneys argued that Combs poses neither a flight risk nor a danger to the public. Under the proposal, submitted on Tuesday, the 55-year-old would remain confined to his Miami residence and leave only for court appearances. Previous release requests have been denied by the presiding judge. Combs was arrested in New York in September 2024 on multiple sexual offence charges. In a high-profile trial earlier this month, a jury found him partially guilty, convicting him only on charges related to prostitution - the least severe among the five counts he faced. He now faces up to 20 years in prison. A full conviction could have led to a life sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for October 3. Combs remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in New York. Prosecutors accused Combs of abusing, coercing, and threatening multiple women over several years to fulfil his sexual demands. During the trial, which drew international attention, several witnesses testified about enduring years of sexual and physical abuse. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Teen pleads guilty to punching teacher

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: The 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty to injuring his teacher, in an incident that went viral on social media. PETALING JAYA: A 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty in the Kajang magistrates' court today to injuring a male teacher, in an incident that went viral on social media. The teenager entered the plea before magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil, Harian Metro reported. According to the charge, the Form One transition class student voluntarily caused hurt to the 29-year-old teacher at 4.48pm on Monday. Deputy public prosecutor Syafiq Zulbahrin led the prosecution, while the boy was represented by lawyer S Priyalatha. The report said media personnel were not allowed into the courtroom as the accused is a juvenile. The boy's parents were seen attending the proceedings. His mother, who is in her 40s, told reporters he was her only child and that he lived with her following her separation from his father. She also said her son regretted punching the teacher and had apologised to him. Earlier, the prosecution had proposed bail at RM5,000 with one surety, citing the seriousness of the case and the public attention it had received. The defence requested a lower amount, noting that the boy was a school-going juvenile offender. The court set bail at RM1,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 11 for the social welfare department to submit a probation report before sentencing. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
