UAE deputy PM to arrive in Pakistan today to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Arab News20-04-2025

ISLAMABAD: UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan today, Sunday, on a two-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors, state-run media reported.
Pakistan and the UAE have deepened their economic partnership in recent years. The UAE is Pakistan's third-largest trading partner after China and the United States, and a major source of foreign investment, with over $10 billion invested in the last two decades.
'Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will undertake a two-day official visit to Pakistan from Sunday,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.
It said the high-level visit reflects the deep-rooted, fraternal relations that Pakistan and the UAE enjoy.
'It also underscores the two countries' shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest,' the state broadcaster added.
The UAE is home to over a million Pakistani expatriates — the second-largest overseas Pakistani community globally — and a major source of remittance inflows to Pakistan.
Policymakers in Islamabad view the UAE as an ideal export destination due to its geographic proximity, which lowers freight costs and facilitates smoother trade.
In recent months, the two countries have signed a series of agreements to boost economic ties.
In February, during the Abu Dhabi crown prince's visit to Pakistan, the two sides signed accords in mining, railways, banking and infrastructure.
Last year in January, Pakistan and the UAE signed deals worth more than $3 billion covering railways, economic zones and infrastructure development.
The UAE has become an even more crucial partner for Pakistan amid Islamabad's efforts to achieve sustainable economic growth after suffering from a prolonged macroeconomic crisis.

Pakistan says FATF ignored India's attempts to place Islamabad on ‘grey list'

ISLAMABAD: The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has ignored India's attempts to have Islamabad placed on the anti-money laundering watchdog's 'grey list,' Pakistani state media reported this week as tensions simmer between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Various media outlets had reported that India was likely to push the FATF, a global financial crime watchdog, to add Pakistan back to its grey list during the watchdog's plenary meeting in June. These reports came following India and Pakistan's days-long military confrontation in May before both agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Washington. The FATF's grey list places a country under increased monitoring until it has rectified identified flaws in its financial system. Pakistan was taken off the FATF grey list in 2022, boosting its reputation among lenders which was essential for the country's fragile economy. 'The Financial Action Task Force has decided not to place Pakistan in the grey list at its meeting held on Saturday,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday. 'After the FATF decision, India has completely failed to achieve its objectives as the Indian diplomatic delegation made a strong effort to get Pakistan included in the grey list once again in the FATF meeting.' Neither the FATF nor the Indian government have so far commented on the development. The FATF's plenary year begins in July and ends in June. The watchdog holds its plenary meetings usually in October, February and June of each year. Radio Pakistan reported that China took 'a clear stance' in Islamabad's favor at the FATF meeting while Turkiye and Japan also 'fully supported' Pakistan in not having it placed on the grey list. 'India was trying hard to use FATF against Pakistan with the help of Israel,' the state broadcaster said, describing it as a victory for Pakistan's diplomatic mission. Tensions spiked between the two countries after India blamed Pakistan for an April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 tourists. Pakistan denied involvement and called for an independent probe. The two countries pounded each other with artillery fire, fighter jets, drones and missiles before the ceasefire on May 10. While the ceasefire between the two countries continues to persist, tensions between the neighbors remain high as India says it is holding in abeyance a decades-old water-sharing treaty with Pakistan. Islamabad had said after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty that it considered any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan to be an 'act of war.'

Pakistan Supports Iran, Urges Muslim World to Unite, Defy Israel

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that his country stood resolutely in solidarity with Iran against Israel's unjustified aggression, according to Pakistani media. During a phone call with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, Shehbaz stated that Israel's attacks violated Tehran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Therefore, Iran has the right of self-defense, as provided under Article 51 of the UN Charter. A Call for Unity Meanwhile, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has also denounced the Israeli aggression against Iran, urging the Islamic world to unite against the Israeli occupation state. 'We stand by Iran in every way. We will protect Iranian interests. Iranians are our brothers, and their grief and pain are shared,' Asif said on Saturday addressing the National Assembly following the Israeli strikes on Iran. Asif added that Israel is targeting not just Iran, but also Yemen and Palestine. Consequently, unity has become crucial in the Muslim world. 'If we remain silent and disunited today, then everyone will be targeted eventually,' Asif said. In the light of this, he stressed that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should hold a meeting to agree on a unified strategy to defy Israel's aggression. Israeli Strikes on Iran On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. Pakistan prepares for Joint Ministerial Commission with UAE to deepen trade ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday held a preparatory meeting for the upcoming 12th session of its Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the state media, as the government seeks to strengthen economic and trade relations with the Gulf nation. The JMC is the primary bilateral platform for institutionalized cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE, focusing on trade, investment, energy, labor and consular matters. After remaining inactive for several years, it was revived recently to accelerate high-level economic engagement. The preparatory meeting, according to Radio Pakistan, was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who also serves as the foreign minister of the country. 'Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has reiterated Pakistan's firm commitment to strengthening Pak-UAE economic and trade relations,' the report said. 'He made the remarks while chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Friday to review preparations for the upcoming 12th session of the Pakistan-UAE Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) in Abu Dhabi,' it added. Radio Pakistan said discussions during the meeting focused on advancing key bilateral initiatives, formalizing collaboration in existing sectors, exploring new avenues for cooperation and attracting mutually beneficial UAE investments in priority areas. The UAE is Pakistan's third-largest trading partner. Its proximity to the South Asian state helps minimize export costs, particularly for perishable goods. Pakistan has increasingly sought stronger economic partnerships with Gulf nations to strengthen its economy amid improving macroeconomic indicators. The UAE has supported Pakistan during recent economic crises, including by maintaining deposits with the State Bank of Pakistan and helping Islamabad unlock critical IMF loan tranches. So far, the government has not officially announced any date for the 12th JMC session, though it is expected to help expand bilateral economic cooperation.
