Ayer Kuning polls: Victory shows unity gov't formula won hearts in Perak
Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, also the Communications Minister, said the majority won by Barisan Nasional candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir had increased, while the votes received by his opponent from Perikatan Nasional had plummeted.
"Of the 20 district polling centres, 19 were won by the Government. This is a positive sign but we must not be complacent… still a lot that we must strive to do to ensure this victory can be consolidated," he said.
He said this at a media conference after launching the Community Day Programme at Nadi Sim Sim here on Sunday (April 27).
Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Meanwhile, he said the healthy campaigning methods used were the reason why voters in Ayer Kuning chose the Government and rejected the opposition party, which chose topics that did not resonate with the residents.
Fahmi said the people also rejected campaigns that were racist and divisive.
"We can see, it's easy to say that it's a rejection of that kind of racist politics. Malaysian will reject it, especially in Ayer Kuning where they can't accept it and they chose unity over division," he said.
Mohd Yusri, also the Tapah Umno Division secretary, won the Ayer Kuning by-election with a 5,006-vote majority after polling 1,065 votes in the three-cornered by-election on Saturday (April 26).
His closest rival, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional received 6,059 votes, while Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia garnered 1,106 votes.
The result also reaffirmed Ayer Kuning as a BN stronghold, a position the coalition has maintained since 1986.
The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on Feb 22 due to a heart attack. - Bernama

Up to 300,000 people recently joined the "March for Humanity" across Sydney Harbour Bridge to demand a ceasefire, sanctions on Israel and recognition of Palestinian statehood. Writers like Omar El Akkad and activists like Nidzara Ahmetasevic have criticised the moral duplicity of the West, which failed to learn from the genocide in Bosnia. Malaysian media has the potential to bridge the voices of the Global South with Western consciousness. On the issue of Palestine, we must no longer rely on Western news agencies whose coverage often favours Israel and marginalises the Global South. Renowned academic and thinker Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Murad Merican has urged Malaysian media to lead efforts in declaring Asean a "Genocide-Free Zone", with deep reporting and regional advocacy. Our media can elevate historical witnesses like Gaza's journalists as icons of humanity; embed narratives of compassion, inclusivity and sustainability in its coverage; and build regional networks that unite voices from Asean, BRICS+, D-8 and the Global South. Thus, Malaysia joining The Hague Group and supporting South Africa's legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice is not merely a diplomatic gesture, it is also a narrative declaration that Malaysia stands with truth. The genocide in Gaza is not just a humanitarian tragedy — it is also a test of global honesty, media courage and the resilience of meaning. The multipolar media alliance — rising from the Islamic world, BRICS, Africa and Latin America — has forged a battleground not of weapons, but of witness, empathy and interpretation. They do not merely report — they resurrect the meaning that was meant to be erased.

Kemaman Port Needs Updating, Sandakan Joins ASEAN Liberalisation -- MOT
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) – The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has requested that Kemaman Port Consortium update and submit its development proposal for Kemaman Port, in line with the port development plan and concession agreement. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the ministry has taken note of the port expansion proposal and, through the Kemaman Port Authority, has asked for the proposal to be submitted. 'In principle, MOT always encourages private investment in driving maritime activities. Therefore, MOT will facilitate any private sector party to develop ports,' he said during the winding up debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Loke also said that MOT has taken note of the Kedah state government's announcement regarding a private sector proposal to develop a seaport in the state's Sanglang area. 'MOT has not received any comprehensive proposal from the private sector for port development in that area. Any proposals for port development there remain at the conceptual stage. 'Therefore, the drafting and alignment of new port limits to develop a port in Sanglang, Kedah and Perlis, does not arise,' he said. Commenting on the issue of upgrading Sandakan Airport and the commencement of direct international flights to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Singapore, which have yet to begin, Loke said the government has always encouraged both local and foreign airlines to provide direct international flight services into Malaysia. 'MOT has taken steps such as conducting annual bilateral negotiations with foreign countries to establish and enhance traffic rights between Malaysia and those countries. MOT Ready To Discuss Cross-border e-hailing Implementation With Singapore
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Ministry of Transport (MOT) is in principle ready to discuss with Singapore the implementation of cross-border e-hailing between Johor and the republic. He said the matter had been raised with Singapore's former Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat, but the republic was not ready to discuss the proposal at that time. "This matter cannot be implemented by one party alone; both sides must agree before it can be implemented," he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for the MOT in the Dewan Rakyat today. Regarding the Special Op for Foreign Vehicle E-Hailing on Aug 13, he said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had detained and seized four private vehicles driven by Singaporean individuals, which are still under investigation by JPJ. 'Why is there this special operation? Because at the Singapore level, they are also enforcing the law on private vehicles from Malaysia, especially those from Johor Bahru entering Singapore, which are being stopped. It is said that they are providing an illegal service, such as e-hailing services. "So, we are also taking the same approach in enforcing our laws as a reciprocal approach to what is being implemented in Singapore, but we hope there is a better long-term solution so that this cross-border connectivity can be improved," he said. To address the issue of cross-border traffic congestion between Johor and Singapore, Loke said the federal government is, among other things, upgrading the main road network connecting the Bukit Chagar Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link station to make traffic flow more efficient. At the same time, he said the MOT and the Johor state government had announced an initiative to expand the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) scheme as a medium-term solution. 'The Johor government has also identified 13 bus routes from JB Sentral to strategic locations for passenger convenience. This initiative aims to create a more efficient intermediate bus network connecting residential and commercial areas to the Bukit Chagar RTS station," he said.
