Ayer Kuning by-election: Increased support for UMNO among Malay, young voters

KUALA LUMPUR: The outcome of the Ayer Kuning state by-election reflects growing support for UMNO among Malays, young voters, and various ethnic communities, said secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. He said the victory also demonstrated the public's rejection of racial politics, hate speech, slander, and narratives suggesting that Islam and the Malay community are under threat. 'UMNO extends its gratitude to the machinery of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties and Friends of BN, as well as our partners in Pakatan Harapan (PH), who worked tirelessly to secure victory for the BN candidate. 'We are also deeply grateful to all voters in Ayer Kuning for their trust and confidence in UMNO and BN, which led to a decisive win across all polling districts except one,' he said in a statement issued after the UMNO Supreme Council meeting at Menara Dato' Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) last night. In the three-cornered contest, BN candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir retained the seat with 11,065 votes against PN's Abd Muhaimin Malek (6,059 votes) and PSM's Bawani KS (1,106 votes). Meanwhile, Asyraf Wajdi also announced that UMNO will hold its first Patriotic School Convocation in conjunction with the party's 79th anniversary celebration at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, WTCKL on May 11.

Ayer Kuning polls: Victory shows unity gov't formula won hearts in Perak

SANDAKAN: The victory in the Ayer Kuning state by-election is proof that the MADANI Government's formula has captured and won the hearts of the people. Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, also the Communications Minister, said the majority won by Barisan Nasional candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir had increased, while the votes received by his opponent from Perikatan Nasional had plummeted. "Of the 20 district polling centres, 19 were won by the Government. This is a positive sign but we must not be complacent… still a lot that we must strive to do to ensure this victory can be consolidated," he said. He said this at a media conference after launching the Community Day Programme at Nadi Sim Sim here on Sunday (April 27). Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. Meanwhile, he said the healthy campaigning methods used were the reason why voters in Ayer Kuning chose the Government and rejected the opposition party, which chose topics that did not resonate with the residents. Fahmi said the people also rejected campaigns that were racist and divisive. "We can see, it's easy to say that it's a rejection of that kind of racist politics. Malaysian will reject it, especially in Ayer Kuning where they can't accept it and they chose unity over division," he said. Mohd Yusri, also the Tapah Umno Division secretary, won the Ayer Kuning by-election with a 5,006-vote majority after polling 1,065 votes in the three-cornered by-election on Saturday (April 26). His closest rival, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional received 6,059 votes, while Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia garnered 1,106 votes. The result also reaffirmed Ayer Kuning as a BN stronghold, a position the coalition has maintained since 1986. The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on Feb 22 due to a heart attack. - Bernama

BN Candidate's Win In Ayer Kuning By-election No Surprise

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir when he was announced as the winner of the Ayer Kuning state by-election (PRK) at Dewan Merdeka Tapah last night. KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- The victory of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir in the Ayer Kuning state by-election yesterday was expected and not surprising, said a political analyst. Universiti Malaysia Terengganu deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain said BN's victory gave a clear picture of the current political situation in the state, which shows good cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN. "This result is what we expected because Ayer Kuning is a traditional UMNO stronghold. We expected them to win… BN had the advantage and could win comfortably because of the votes of PH supporters. "We see the political landscape in Perak as a very unique situation because the political collaboration between BN and PH is extremely good and this was reflected in the Ayer Kuning by-election. We also saw a very mature political election because there were no hot issues, instead only local issues have coloured the polemics and election campaign,' he said. He said this as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme titled "Analisis Keputusan PRK Ayer Kuning' (Analysis of Ayer Kuning By-Election Result) last night. BN retained the Ayer Kuning seat when its candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir secured victory in the three-cornered fight with a 5,006-vote majority. The Tapah UMNO Division secretary, also known as Ustaz Yusri, garnered 11,065 votes to defeat Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional (PN), who scored 6,059 votes and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), who obtained only 1,106 votes. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Political Science senior lecturer Mujibu Abd Muis said there is a need for all parties to view the consistently low voter turnout in the past few by-elections as a serious issue. "Whatever happens in the context of a by-election, we must find a way to get voters to be more excited about them (by-elections) and view it as their civic duty (to go out and vote),' he said.
