Ayer Kuning By-election Victory Shows Unity Gov't Formula Won Hearts In Perak

SANDAKAN, April 27 (Bernama) -- The victory in the Ayer Kuning state by-election is proof that the MADANI Government's formula has captured and won the hearts of the people.
MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, also the Minister of Communications, said the majority won by Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir had increased, while the votes received by his opponent from Perikatan Nasional (PN) had plummeted.
"Of the 20 district polling centres, 19 were won by the MADANI Government. This is a positive sign but we must not be complacent… still a lot that we must strive to do to ensure this victory can be consolidated,' he said.

He said this at a media conference after launching the Community Day Programme (HBK) at NADI Sim Sim here today.
Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Meanwhile, he said the healthy campaigning methods used were the reason why voters in Ayer Kuning chose the MADANI Government and rejected the opposition party, which chose topics that did not resonate with the residents.

Fahmi said the people also rejected campaigns that were racist and divisive.
"We can see, it's easy to say that it's a rejection of that kind of racist politics. Malaysian will reject it, especially in Ayer Kuning where they can't accept it and they chose unity over division,' he said.
Mohd Yusri, also the Tapah UMNO Division secretary, won the Ayer Kuning by-election with a 5,006-vote majority after polling 1,065 votes in the three-cornered by-election yesterday. His closest rival, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional received 6,059 votes, while Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia garnered 1,106 votes.

Tengku Zafrul concedes Malaysia hit with 19pc US tariffs after refusing to cross ‘red lines', but insists won't retaliate

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Malaysia faces a 19 per cent tariffs from the United States since it refuses to cross the 'red lines' in its negotiations with Washington, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abd Aziz has said. Speaking in an interview with US-based CNBC's 'Squawk Box Asia', Tengku Zafrul said that Malaysia will however not retaliate since the US is too important as an investor and export destination for Malaysia and Asean. 'We've seen that there were some red lines that we discussed during our tariff negotiation, and they understood,' he said. 'And I mean, that's, I guess, one of the reasons why we got 19 per cent is because we don't meet up with all the requests. We didn't agree with all the requests.' The transcript of the interview was made available to Malay Mail. On August 1, the US announced it has imposed a reduced tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysian imports — revised from the initially scheduled 25 per cent. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that Malaysia will not bow to pressure that could undermine national policies, including negotiations with the US related to tariffs. He said that although investment and trade with the US are significant, Malaysia has a 'red line' in negotiations — namely the Bumiputera policy — which must not be compromised, even if it is perceived as 'discriminatory' by external parties. In addition, Tengku Zafrul also acknowledged market concern over possible sectoral tariffs, noting former US president Donald Trump has floated duties as high as 300 per cent on semiconductor products. He said semiconductor tariffs remain at 0 per cent, but warned that sharp hikes would hit Malaysia and its regional peers. 'If you look at the supply chain of semiconductor, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, I mean all the Asean countries are quite involved in that supply chain into the US, into China, into Europe. And this will have an impact to not just for Malaysia or for Asean, but globally as well,' he said. On diversification, he said Malaysia is pressing ahead with multiple trade tracks to reduce over-reliance on not only US, but also China. Tengku Zafrul also disclosed Malaysia has concluded a trade deal with South Korea that is slated to be signed at Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) or a leaders' summit. Talks with the European Union have resumed after stalling in 2012, and engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council has begun, he added. He said Malaysia is also pushing to upgrade the Asean-India Trade in Goods Agreement and has concluded a third-version upgrade of the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement with green and digital chapters. Tengku Zafrul added that with intra-Asean trade still below 25 per cent, an Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement — set for discussion in Malaysia on the 28th — will be critical to pull more small and medium enterprises into regional trade.

South Korea and US launch annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military drills

SEOUL: South Korea and the United States commenced their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises on 18 August, incorporating real-world threat scenarios and combat lessons from modern conflicts. The drills will run until 28 August, involving approximately 18,000 South Korean troops and a similar number of US personnel, matching last year's participation levels. While the overall scale remains comparable to 2024, around half of the planned 40 field training exercises have been postponed to September due to weather conditions. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff cited meteorological factors for the adjustments but also considered potential reactions from North Korea, which historically opposes such drills. Both Seoul and Washington reiterated that the exercises primarily focus on refining responses to threats posed by North Korea. North Korean Defence Minister No Kwang Chol previously condemned the drills as 'provocative actions' on 10 August, warning of serious consequences. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises aim to enhance coordination and readiness between the two allies amid ongoing regional tensions. – Bernama-Sputnik

(Photo Credit Yonhap) SEOUL, Aug 18 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae-myung on Monday called for taking steps where necessary to implement existing inter-Korean agreements, days after he reaffirmed his pledge to restore ties and trust with North Korea, including reviving the 2018 military tension reduction pact, Yonhap News Agency reported. "True security lies in safeguarding peace. What we need now is the courage to steadily take steps to ease tensions while firmly maintaining an ironclad defence posture," Lee said during a Cabinet meeting. "I ask the relevant ministries to prepare for a phased implementation of existing inter-Korean agreements, starting with those where possible," Lee said. bootstrap slideshow His remarks came after he reinforced in his Liberation Day address that his government will take measures to reduce tensions and restore trust with Pyongyang. Lee said the South under his leadership will respect the North's current system and that it will not pursue any form of unification by absorption. He also said that Seoul will take "proactive, gradual steps" to restore the Sept 19 military agreement, signed between the two sides in 2018 to reduce border tensions. "If small, practical steps pile up like pebbles, mutual trust will be restored. The path to peace will widen, and a foundation will be laid for South and North Korea to grow together," Lee said. "Amid a rapidly changing external environment, inter-Korean relations are vital to protecting our national interests and expanding room for diplomacy," he added. -- BERNAMA-YONHAP
