Karol G to headline halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast, live from Brazil
The Grammy award-winning musician will headline a halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast next month, which will stream live from Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5. That's the NFL week 1 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the reigning AFC-winning Kansas City Chiefs.
'This year has been truly rewarding, and the timing of this opportunity — to be part of such an important moment like YouTube's first-ever NFL live broadcast — is perfect,' the singer shared in an exclusive written statement. 'With my latest album 'Tropicoqueta,' I set out to represent the many facets of my Latin culture, something I'm incredibly passionate about in everything I do. I'm excited to bring that same energy and pride to this global stage and honored to continue elevating Latin culture on such a monumental platform.'
It's a natural pairing. Karol G is a global superstar, American football is growing in popularity worldwide, and many of the world's most ardent music fans call Brazil home — it's one of the many reasons 'Come to Brazil' has become a stalwart meme, a three-word stand-in for the ultimate expression of fandom.
'Our goal is to highlight the excitement and Americana of the NFL, but do this thoughtfully in a way that plays to local cultures, practices and traditions,' said Tim Tubito, senior director of global game presentation and entertainment at the NFL.
Booking Karol G 'not only excites our fans and pays homage to their culture in South America, but has an impact on a global scale,' he added. 'We hope all of our fans are ready for a historic celebration.'
The game is free to stream for fans across the globe, exclusively through YouTube and YouTube TV. It begins at 5 p.m. Pacific / 8 p.m. Eastern / 9 p.m. BRT (local time). A pre-show kicks off an hour earlier.
'To celebrate this moment, we are thrilled that global superstar Karol G will perform during our halftime show,' said Angela Courtin, VP of sports and entertainment marketing at YouTube in a statement. 'The game and performance will be broadcast worldwide for free on YouTube, blending the fandom of sports and music together for one epic cultural moment.'

Eagles great Lane Johnson continues to cement his Hall of Fame credentials
As a prep star, longtime Philadelphia Eagles star Lane Johnson torched the competition as one of the better quarterbacks in the great state of Texas. That led to a season at Kilgore College, where he played tight end and QB. He threw for 510 passing yards and three touchdowns. After his freshman year, he transferred to join the Oklahoma Sooners. That's where many of us got to know him. Philadelphia made him the fourth overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft, during the Chip Kelly era. Thank Heaven he was a Howie Roseman selection. Lane Johnson further solidifies his Hall of Fame resume This isn't meant disrespectfully. This is more of a statement of how much he has grown and what he has overcome, but you can't tell the Lane Johnson story without detailing a pair of extensions and how he has turned his life around. Johnson was recently a guest on The Pivot Podcast. He detailed stories of navigating challenges with mental health and nagging injuries. That led to the questions about how long his career might continue. Had he left the game early, we may not be talking about the Pro Football Hall of Fame-worthy icon that he grew to become. Some of the best news we all heard last season was that Johnson would return to the Eagles in 2025. He said he'd do so regardless of the outcome of Super Bowl LIX. The other members of the Eagles 'core four have retired. With that decision made, Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham hand the O.G. title to the man Nick Sirianni calls 'the NFL's best offensive tackle'. Johnson has aged like a fine wine. He has gone from an excellent and dominant young tackle to an immovable NFL icon. He has redefined what success looks like at the offensive tackle position. He learned from Jason Peters and Jason Kelce. He's now a mentor to Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, and Tyler Steen. The resume speaks for itself. Lane Johnson is a six-time Pro Bowler (2017–2019, 2022–2024). Twice, he has been named a First-Team All-Pro (2017, 2022). Three times, he has been named a Second-team All-Pro (2021, 2023, 2024). Say what you will about Penei Sewell. He's fantastic, but he owes Johnson that First-Team All-Pro nod from 2024. Most importantly, Johnson is a two-time Super Bowl champion, and that is how history will remember him (unless he wins another one). He has long proven he is worthy of Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Everything he does now adds to the icing on the cake. Watching him has been a privilege, one that will continue during the coming Eagles season. Justin Herbert to play in his first-ever preseason game as the Chargers face the Rams
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Justin Herbert will play in the first preseason game of his career when the Los Angeles Chargers visit the LA Rams on Saturday. Herbert will play one or two series in the game at SoFi Stadium, coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday. Entering his sixth season in the league, the 27-year-old quarterback has yet to throw a pass in a preseason game. When he was a rookie in 2020, the preseason was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2021, Herbert was coming off a stellar rookie year and then-Chargers coach Brandon Staley didn't want to risk an injury during exhibition play. Staley maintained that approached in 2023, as did Harbaugh when he took over last season. Trey Lance and Taylor Heinicke will play after Herbert. Lance threw for only 55 yards against the New Orleans Saints last weekend but he ran seven times for a team-high 48 yards, including a 5-yard TD run. Lance threw for two TDs in a win over the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game. Heinicke started against the Saints and was 1 of 5 for 8 yards. Herbert and wide receiver Keenan Allen will be among the offensive starters who will play against the Rams. On defense, Khalil Mack and Derwin James Jr. won't play as Harbaugh indicated they don't need the reps. 'I know they're ready,' he said. 'I remember when K Mack got traded to the Bears and didn't practice at all and then pick-6 and a couple sacks. I know they're good and ready to go.' The Chargers, who are 2-0 in the preseason, canceled their joint practice with the Rams on Wednesday, citing a rash of injuries, including the season-ending loss of Rashawn Slater. 'We felt it was more prudent to reconfigure," Harbaugh said, "and that's what we did.' ___ AP NFL:
