Police arrest hawala gang member in kidnap case
Kochi: Police arrested a man who was part of the hawala racket that kidnapped a youth from Kalamassery. Police identified the arrested person as Haris, a 39-year-old resident of Perambra.

He was apprehended by Kalamassery police team with the assistance of the Kozhikode district rural police.The victim, identified as Saurav, who hails from Meppayur in Kozhikode, was abducted on April 30 from Thameem Apartment near Cochin University. He was held hostage at various locations for two days. The accused demanded Rs 5,00,000 as ransom from his family.Kalamassery police rescued him on May 2 from Balussery in Kozhikode, with the assistance of Kozhikode district rural police.Police also arrested another accused in the case, Hashir, 21, from Perambra, who was involved with the hawala mafia and came to collect the ransom. The police also seized Rs 3.6 lakh from him. He is currently in remand.Detailed investigations by Kalamassery police revealed that an online scam gang and the hawala mafia were behind the abduction. A team led by Kalamassery inspector Latheef MB is investigating the case and the probe will be extended to other states. The accused was presented in court on Friday and was remanded to judicial custody.Two held for theft: Police arrested two men on Friday morning for robbing two rings, including a wedding ring, from a man who was sitting by the roadside near Mantra Bridge. Police identified the arrested persons as Saleem Beeran, 55, alias Bandichor, of Mattancherry, and Kunjumon, 57, of Thoppumpady.The robbery occurred on the night of April 20. When the victim tried to stop the robbery, the accused attacked him and escaped on a scooter. The accused were arrested by a police team led by Fort Kochi police inspector MS Faisal. They were arrested from their homes following an investigation based on CCTV footage and mobile phone locations, police said.

Dharamshala: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday inaugurated an Integrated command, Control and Crime response centre in Dharamshala. The state-of-the-art 'Chakshu Chakra' centre, developed under the Smart City Mission, is located at the Superintendent of Police Office, Dharamshala, according to a statement issued here. Developed at a cost of Rs 2.72 crore, the centre will serve as a centralised hub for urban surveillance, coordination, and rapid response. It is expected to significantly bolster urban governance, facilitate real-time monitoring, and improve the efficiency of public service delivery. In the future, all surveillance systems across Kangra district will be integrated with this central server, enabling seamless and comprehensive monitoring, officials said. The initiative reflects the state government's commitment to leveraging technology for smarter, safer, and more responsive urban management. Chakshu Chakra is poised to be a transformative step toward making Dharamshala a more secure, organised, and modern urban center, they added.

According to a report with The Times Of India, the techie, who hailed from Tamil Nadu, had gone to the stadium in the middle of her shift after her request for a few hours off was approved at nearly 2.30 pm. Some of her friends told TOI that Devi was a Virat Kohli fan and was determined to visit the Chinnaswamy Stadium even after entry passes were no more available online. In the hope of grabbing a pass at the venue, Devi left her laptop and her bag at her desk in the office. As she boarded a metro, she texted one of her friends that she was on her way, which turned out to be the last message from her. 'Her laptop is still on the table, her bag is here, but she is not there," one of her colleagues was quoted as saying by TOI. The colleague also said they learnt about Devi's death after they received a call from one of the hospitals, adding that they were yet to break the news to her parents. Another RCB supporter, who wondered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium after the stampede, said he did not understand what went wrong. 'We came to watch our stars. I bought tickets for the function, but was not even able to enter the stadium. Police suddenly blocked all the roads and closed all the entrances to the venue, and suddenly they started lathi-charging near the main gate," said Prashant Shetty, a post-graduate student who came along with a few of his friends. 'I don't know what we did wrong. We were invited to the function, bought tickets, but in the end got beaten up and abused. Terrible day for fans like us," he added. Meanwhile, the government, hours after the incident, announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased. What was meant to be a day of celebration became a day of mourning after 11 fans were killed in a mad scramble to attend the team's IPL victory party. Thirty-three of the team's injured supporters had to be hospitalised after a chaotic day. According to news agency PTI, the tickets for the hastily-arranged engagement programme were sold in a jiffy, but the fans crowded all the gates 12, 13 (main gates) and 10 (club house entrance) with not enough security to control them. The number swelled to unexpected levels around 3.30 pm, and it forced the police and stadium security officials to close all the gates to prevent the ticketless from squeezing in along with the ones who had valid tickets. At around 4.30 pm, many more came from the nearby Cubbon Park metro station, worsening the situation, and the police had to resort to mild use of force to disperse the huge gathering. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede claimed the lives of at least 11 fans and injured several others. After RCB's long-awaited first IPL title win on June 3 in Ahmedabad, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had organised a felicitation ceremony in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Thousands of fans gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes. However, as the crowd swelled, the situation became unmanageable. Police resorted to a lathi-charge to control the crowd, leading to panic and chaos. Seven people were killed in the resulting stampede, while several others were rushed to Bowring Hospital and Vydehi Superspeciality Hospital for treatment. "People will not forget this or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It's truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore for this tragic is also shirking responsibility," former Indian cricketer Madan Lal told IANS. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media after the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the dead. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended the arrangements, stating, 'We had arranged for 5,000 police personnel. We couldn't use force on such a young, vibrant crowd.' The authorities have confirmed that the bodies of two persons are at Bowring Hospital and that of four others at Vaidehi Hospital. Six people are being treated in the ICU of the Vaidehi Hospital and three are admitted to the ICU. The government of Karnataka had earlier cancelled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing security reasons.
