BUKAYO SAKA lay in his hospital bed on Christmas Eve, doubting whether he would be as good a player in the future as he had been in the past.
But thanks to a self-help book and the mindful joy of a new puppy, the England and Arsenal star has returned from hamstring surgery focused only on the present.

Buyako Saka was 'worried' about his future after having surgery just before Christmas

Saka tore his hamstring against Crystal Palace in December
And it is that perspective that can help put a frustrating campaign — that began with a Euros final loss for England and ended trophyless for his club — behind him.
Saka, 23, said: 'I was not happy with last season — how it went and how it ended.
'But the only thing I can do now is look forward and try to be the best version of myself and help my team-mates be the same.'
The Londoner went under the knife on December 24 after sustaining the injury three days prior in a 5-1 win at Crystal Palace.

In typical, kind fashion, he opted to do the procedure 24 hours before Christmas so the surgeons could be with their nearest and dearest the following day.
He made it home to spend Christmas with his loved ones but what followed was nearly four months out which he used for self-reflection.
The Gunners talisman said: 'I had gone from five years straight playing football, either involved with the team every single day training or playing games. Everything stops.
'You are on crutches, in hospital and need help around the house for the first few weeks.

'I got to spend more time with my family and got to do little things around the house that I wouldn't have even paid attention to when I was playing.
'On that note it was nice and I've come back with a bit more of a balanced head about football and life, and I'm trying to balance them better. It definitely helped me mentally.

Saka returned in March and played a starring role in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Real Madrid
'The first two days were the toughest, that realisation that I've got what I've got and I need an operation.
'You start to think, 'Am I going to be the same?' as players came back from this injury and weren't the same.
'After two days my surgery was done, and successful, and you just look forward. I was really positive and put in all the work I needed with my diet, in the gym, on the pitch and the physios would say the same. I feel I've come back in a good place.'
Saka is a keen reader of non-fiction and was inspired by a recommendation from Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta during his time sidelined.
It is called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and its message struck a chord with the talented winger.
He added: 'It's a really good book. It's about not thinking about the past, not thinking about the future, just being in the moment.
You start to think, 'Am I going to be the same?'
Saka
'Sometimes I can think, 'Oh, am I going to come back in the best shape?' Or, in the past, 'What could I have done to prevent injury?'
'But all that is not necessary. It's only going to bring bad energy, negativity to your body.
'One of the best things I took from the book is always ask yourself, what's necessary in this moment right now and try to live that way.'
Saka spent Christmas Day in a brace and on crutches at his cousin's, having had surgery at 5am the previous day.
He claimed it took him 'ten minutes' to get to the dining room for dinner.
So when his lively new Cockapoo called Tucker turned up soon after, it was not easy 'to get after him', as Saka put it, even if having the pooch has been a 'good and funny experience'.
On Tuesday against Senegal at Nottingham Forest's City Ground, Saka hopes to feature for the first time under Thomas Tuchel, who he describes as 'demanding and intense' on the grass but 'relaxed and nice' off it.
Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich chief Tuchel has been brought in with the sole remit of winning the World Cup next year after a series of near-misses under predecessor Gareth Southgate.
The German has won all three of his games, without conceding a goal, but underwhelmed with performances, especially in Saturday's drab 1-0 victory over Andorra in Barcelona.
And Saka admits England sometimes have a motivation issue against the smaller nations.

Arsenal team-mate Myles Lewis-Skelly has been called up to England again
But the bottom line — and Saka knows this best after a tough 12 months — is that winning is what matters most.
He added: 'Every player is different and I can't answer for every player but naturally in the bigger games everyone is going to give a bit more.
'In these other games we need to find a level where we can maintain that same quality and drive and hunger for the whole game.
'It's not easy at times but we need to find that and get these games over the line.
'The Andorra game, we still won, got another three points on the board and kept a clean sheet. It's job done.
'The expectation is to win, rather than entertain. If you can have both, then perfect. But we feel more the expectation is to win than to entertain.'

Martin Zubimendi Arsenal transfer saga nears conclusion after bold move

Martin Zubimendi looks set to be Arsenal's first signing of the summer transfer window but there are a number of other deals the Gunners are hoping to complete to ensure they remain in the title race next season Arsenal are set to be one of the major players in the transfer window this summer, though fans are still awaiting the club's first signing as they bid to put a difficult 2024-25 season behind them. The Gunners are hard at work trying to lure a new striker to the Emirates after being left without a recognised No 9 for much of the Premier League season. Mikel Arteta 's side still managed to finish second but ended up 10 points behind Liverpool and also crashed out of the Champions League in the semi-finals. ‌ Arteta will need quality reinforcements if he wants to challenge Liverpool for the title again, while the pressure is on because rivals Chelsea and Manchester City have already strengthened. ‌ Arsenal are hoping to strengthen in every position if they can but a midfielder and striker are the priorities, with more room in the wage budget after sealing the exits of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney. Mirror Football has taken a look through all the biggest Arsenal transfer news and rumours. How Arsenal clinched Zubimendi deal Without doubt, Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is Arsenal's primary focus as things stand, but fans have been sweating on the deal after the player's comments saying he was unsure about his future. There have also been reports from Spanish outlet Marca that Real Madrid are ready to swoop for Zubimendi and hijack Arsenal's deal. But despite the speculation, it's understood Arsenal have now struck a deal to sign Zubimendi by agreeing to pay £54m for his signature - which is £4m more than his release clause. ‌ According to the Athletic, Sociedad told Arsenal they wanted the deal to go through in July due to accounting reasons, while the Gunners have been negotiating over the structure of the deal - hoping to pay in instalments - which has added to the delay. As a compromise, Arsenal have now agreed to pay over the odds for Zubimendi in order to spread the cost over a couple of years. It's understood Real Madrid's interest was not a reason for delaying the deal and Arsenal are now happy with the outcome. ‌ Saliba contract could complicate Guehi move Another position Arsenal are keen to bolster is their backline after suffering a number of injuries in that position last season. Gabriel, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori all struggled with fitness issues at various points and Arteta will need consistency at the back if his Arsenal side is to mount a serious challenge for silverware next season. While he will be eager to sign a new centre-back, the Spaniard is also desperate to keep hold of key defender William Saliba amid speculation he could join Real Madrid. ‌ The Gunners are hoping to tie Saliba down to a new contract, but that in itself could complicate any move to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi. Arsenal walked away from a deal for Guehi last summer after reportedly being quoted £70m, but he now has just one year remaining on his contract. ‌ There could be difficulties attempting to lure Guehi to the Emirates, however, when the England international knows that Arsenal have two formidable defenders in Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes - which could mean a struggle for game time. The Athletic reports that Arteta is eager to add another centre-back to his ranks but with Guehi having interest from the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle and ex-club Chelsea, he may feel a move elsewhere would be best for his career. Marquinhos finally leaves Arsenal Arsenal have confirmed their latest outgoing deal with Brazilian forward Marquinhos moving permanently to Cruzeiro after being loaned out for a number of seasons. ‌ The 22-year-old joined Arsenal from Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo in 2022 and hopes were high for the youngster - but he failed to make an impact at the Emirates. Marquinhos' first and only season playing for the club came in the 2022-23 campaign, where he featured six times, and has since been loaned out to Norwich, Nantes, Fluminense and Cruizeiro. ‌ Cruzeiro have now opted to make that move permanent, bringing an end to his difficult spell. Arsenal had originally signed Marquinhos for around £3m after finding a loophole in his contract, angering Wolves - who had struck an agreement to bring him to Molineux. There were fears Wolves could take legal action against the player, Arsenal and Sao Paulo before the Molineux outfit opted not to go ahead with it.

Paul Scholes urges Man Utd to 'just buy' £68m England star during Senegal defeat

Paul Scholes urged Manchester United to 'just buy' Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze during England's 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Thomas Tuchel suffered his first loss as England manager as the Three Lions were booed off the pitch by supporters at The City Ground on Tuesday night. Eze was brought on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 win against Andorra on Saturday but played a full 90 minutes in the defeat to Senegal and played a key role in the build-up to Harry Kane's early opener. The 26-year-old was one of England's only positives against Senegal and Scholes was clearly a fan of the Crystal Palace midfielder's performance. During the game, Scholes posted a picture of Eze in an England shirt with the caption: 'Just buy him.' Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Eze heads into the summer off the back of a superb season with Crystal Palace having scored the winner against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. In all competitions, scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists for Oliver Glasner's side. Eze has attracted interest from Tottenham and it's understood that he has a £68 million release clause in his deal with Palace which can be activated in the summer transfer window. Speaking last month, Scholes' former teammate, Dwight Yorke, also urged United to make a move for Eze. More Trending 'Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace would be perfect for Manchester United,' Yorke said. 'Yeah, he scored at the weekend in the FA Cup final, but it's not just about that. A year ago, maybe more, I said this kid and Michael Olise – who went to Bayern – United should buy them for £100 million. Put £100m down and you will get two fantastic players. 'Instead, they listened to the figures in the hierarchy, which is understandable, but it's glaring just how good these two are. 'Eze has the decision-making, the talent, he's a good athlete, he can create and score. He's at the right age to step up and play on a bigger platform. It's a no-brainer.' Tottenham close to agreement with Brentford over Thomas Frank appointment

Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday – 16 days after he led them to Europa League success – and quickly set their sights on Frank. After positive initial talks over the weekend, confidence started to grow on Monday that Frank would be the man to replace Postecoglou and Tottenham made an official approach to their Premier League rivals later in the day. "One of the best stories in English football" 💬 We sat down with Thomas Frank to get his review of the 2024/25 season as we secured a second top ten finish in three years ⤵️ — Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) May 30, 2025 Discussions continued into Tuesday and centred on Frank's contract at Brentford, which runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. Talks are set to enter Wednesday, but an agreement between Spurs and Brentford over a compensation package to appoint Frank is close, PA understands. Further progress is required over Frank's backroom staff and how many will follow the Danish coach to Tottenham. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. One of the first decisions he would be faced with if appointed concerns the future of Tottenham captain Son Heung-min. A post shared by Son HeungMin(손흥민)🇰🇷 (@hm_son7) Son had a 12-month option in his current contract triggered in January. 'I still have one more year left on the contract,' Son said on Tuesday, as reported by Korean agency Yonhap. 'Rather than saying anything at this moment, I think we should all wait and see what happens.'
