Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko clinched her maiden WTA tour-level title with her triumph over Naomi Osaka on Friday in the final of the Canadian Open.
The home hope got the better of the seasoned Osaka in front of adoring fans to become the fifth youngest to clinch the coveted title at the event in Montreal.
The 18-year-old became the second-youngest player in the Open Era to defeat four Grand Slam champions in a single tournament. The only player to achieve this feat at a younger age is the legendary Serena Williams at the US Open in 1999.

Wasim Akram Asks Pakistan To Recall Out-Of-Favour Star For Asia Cup: 'Would Definitely Include...'
Wasim Akram has reminded fans how the discarded batter had performed for Somerset in 2019. Fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has called for Pakistan's premier batter Babar Azam to return to the T20I squad for next month's Asia Cup, emphasising the need for an experienced player in the lineup. Pakistan dropped Babar from the T20I format after his last appearance against South Africa in December 2024. His subpar scores and unimpressive strike rate made it clear that he was no longer part of the management's plans. With the Asia Cup approaching and Pakistan still trying to determine its best combination for high-stakes T20I cricket, Akram has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reintegrate Babar into the team. He even stated that if he had the authority, he would have made that decision. 'If I had the authority, I would definitely include Babar Azam in the national T20 team. The Asia Cup and then the World Cup are approaching, and we need a senior batter. Fans may recall that when he represented Somerset in 2019, he scored runs at nearly a 150 strike rate. He has the ability to adapt his batting according to the situation," Akram said during an interview. The 'Sultan of Swing' supported his case by highlighting Babar's ability to adjust his batting style according to the situation. Akram believes Babar, being one of the 'world's best," can shoulder the responsibility and lead the team. Akram advocated for Babar's comeback, considering he has a lot left in him and his versatility to play in different positions, making him an asset for head coach Mike Hesson. 'When we're chasing 140 or 160, especially against big teams, we need someone who can take responsibility and carry the other 10 players along with him. Babar is among the world's best players. He adjusts his game to the format and match situation — he's done it in the past and can do it in the future as well," he said. 'Babar still has a lot of cricket left in him and can achieve much for Pakistan. We all need to support him. The coach can play Babar at any position he wants. In my opinion, number three is ideal for him, but it will depend on the situation. If there are more overs left, someone else could also go in to bat first," he concluded. The Asia Cup will kick off on September 9, and Pakistan will begin its campaign on September 12 against Oman at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Mitchell Marsh Announces Australia's New T20I Opening Pair: 'It'll Be Myself And...'
Last Updated: Australia have locked in their T20I opening pair for the foreseeable future leading up to the world cup next year. Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh has confirmed the opening pair for the 'foreseeable future" as the team starts gearing up for the next year's T20I World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. Australia will start its preparations for the major event with a three-match T20I series against South Africa, beginning on Sunday. Marsh has announced that he will open Australia's batting order, forming a strong partnership with Travis Head. During the 2021 T20 World Cup, Marsh played at the number three position, a move that turned out to be brilliant. The powerful all-rounder delivered a Player of the Match performance in the final, leading Australia to their first T20 World Cup title. Now, the 33-year-old has stated that he will keep his position at the top after opening in five consecutive games against the West Indies last month. Marsh and Head have never opened together in the shortest format. 'It'll be myself and Heady up the top for the foreseeable future. Obviously, we've played a lot together, (we've) got a great relationship, so (we'll) start there," Marsh told reporters in Darwin on Friday. Including Marsh and Head, Australia has tested five openers in the format since David Warner's last appearance after last year's Caribbean World Cup. Marsh did not reveal details about the rest of the batting lineup but confirmed discussions about Tim David's role. Last month, David showcased his explosive batting in the third T20I against the Caribbean side, scoring a 37-ball century, the fastest T20I century for Australia. 'We've spoken about it … we saw that in the Caribbean, that he came in earlier than he would normally. His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins for us," Marsh said. Australia T20 squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.
