Mitchell Marsh Announces Australia's New T20I Opening Pair: 'It'll Be Myself And...'
Australia have locked in their T20I opening pair for the foreseeable future leading up to the world cup next year.
Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh has confirmed the opening pair for the 'foreseeable future" as the team starts gearing up for the next year's T20I World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
Australia will start its preparations for the major event with a three-match T20I series against South Africa, beginning on Sunday. Marsh has announced that he will open Australia's batting order, forming a strong partnership with Travis Head.
During the 2021 T20 World Cup, Marsh played at the number three position, a move that turned out to be brilliant. The powerful all-rounder delivered a Player of the Match performance in the final, leading Australia to their first T20 World Cup title.
Now, the 33-year-old has stated that he will keep his position at the top after opening in five consecutive games against the West Indies last month. Marsh and Head have never opened together in the shortest format.
'It'll be myself and Heady up the top for the foreseeable future. Obviously, we've played a lot together, (we've) got a great relationship, so (we'll) start there," Marsh told reporters in Darwin on Friday.
Including Marsh and Head, Australia has tested five openers in the format since David Warner's last appearance after last year's Caribbean World Cup. Marsh did not reveal details about the rest of the batting lineup but confirmed discussions about Tim David's role.
Last month, David showcased his explosive batting in the third T20I against the Caribbean side, scoring a 37-ball century, the fastest T20I century for Australia.
'We've spoken about it … we saw that in the Caribbean, that he came in earlier than he would normally. His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins for us," Marsh said.
Australia T20 squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.

‘I think it's doubtful': Jonny Bairstow gives honest thoughts on England future
A few years ago, England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was one of the staples in the national side. Fast forward to 2025, the player looks to be a long way away from making a comeback in the team with Bairstow himself not looking confident of returning in England colours. 'Oh look, if that comes, that comes but I think it's doubtful judging by the fact that I've not heard too much,' Bairstow said after scoring an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls for Welsh Fire in the Hundred. Bairstow last played a T20I match for England in June 27 vs India at the semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. His last ODI match was back in 2023 vs Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in an ODI World Cup group Stage match and his last Test was at Dharamsala against India in March 2024. It was also his 100th Test for the country, making him the 17th player in cricketing history to reach that milestone. ''I've not really heard too much.'' Jonny Bairstow says he is not confident about a return to international cricket. He scored a scintillating 86* off just 50 balls to nearly get Welsh Fire over the line at Sophia Gardens this evening. #BBCCricket #TheHundred — Test Match Special (@bbctms) August 9, 2025 Despite having such a long career, Bairstow has never had a settled role in England's Test side. His batting position has changed over the years and whether he would keep wicket has also never been certain. Bairstow took to the Bazball approach like a fish to water. He was the posterboy for the philosophy in its early days and gave the initial ignition to the method in the summer of 2022, helping England chase big totals in the final innings of Tests. Bairstow played in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians and scored 85 runs in 2 matches after he was drafted in for the IPL 2025 Playoffs, replacing English compatriot, Will Jacks. His last stint in the IPL was with PBKS in 2024 where he played in 11 matches. The 35-year-old, however, has a respectable record in the IPL, mainly on the back of a strong profile with the Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2019 and 2021 and a superb 108 not out for PBKS in the league's record 262-run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

Labuschagne Wants To Prove 'Doubters Wrong', Targets Opening Spot In Ashes
Last Updated: Marnus Labuschagne, dropped from Australia's Test team, aims to return by opening in the Ashes series against England. He sees it as a chance to reflect and prove doubters wrong. Dropped Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne is determined to bounce back and prove his doubters wrong, expressing his willingness to open in the Ashes series against England. Labuschagne, traditionally Australia's number three, was excluded from the Test tour of the West Indies in June and July after a prolonged lean spell. In his first public comments since being dropped, he told The Australian newspaper on Sunday that the setback might have been a blessing in disguise. 'It was tough because you never want to be dropped," the 31-year-old said. 'But almost as soon as their (selectors) words came out my mind shifted straight away to, 'Okay, how am I playing the Ashes … how do I make that happen?'. 'This has given me an opportunity to reflect and not having the pressure of the media saying, 'Marnus has got to go'. 'There is a tipping point but it's something I thrive on, proving the doubters wrong and being able to find a way. 'Missing those West Indies Tests gave me the chance to sit back and think, 'This is where I want to be and this is how I'm going to get there'." The 58-Test veteran was moved from his regular position at three to open in the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June, where he scored 17 and 22 before being dropped. However, with his replacement, Sam Konstas, struggling at the top of the order, Labuschagne said he is ready to try again. 'I would be happy to do that — I would love to," he said, with Cameron Green ably filling the number three slot in the West Indies. 'If opener is where I need to bat to be playing in the Test team, that's fine. 'If you had asked me where I prefer to bat, obviously I have batted at three my whole career, but at this stage you don't get a choice." Labuschagne will return to action for Australia in three home one-dayers against South Africa this month. He will then focus on the Sheffield Shield, aiming to impress selectors enough to earn a recall for the five-Test Ashes series starting in Perth on November 21. view comments First Published: August 10, 2025, 13:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
