‘I think it's doubtful': Jonny Bairstow gives honest thoughts on England future

Indian Express2 days ago
A few years ago, England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was one of the staples in the national side. Fast forward to 2025, the player looks to be a long way away from making a comeback in the team with Bairstow himself not looking confident of returning in England colours.
'Oh look, if that comes, that comes but I think it's doubtful judging by the fact that I've not heard too much,' Bairstow said after scoring an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls for Welsh Fire in the Hundred.
Bairstow last played a T20I match for England in June 27 vs India at the semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. His last ODI match was back in 2023 vs Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in an ODI World Cup group Stage match and his last Test was at Dharamsala against India in March 2024. It was also his 100th Test for the country, making him the 17th player in cricketing history to reach that milestone.

Despite having such a long career, Bairstow has never had a settled role in England's Test side. His batting position has changed over the years and whether he would keep wicket has also never been certain.
Bairstow took to the Bazball approach like a fish to water. He was the posterboy for the philosophy in its early days and gave the initial ignition to the method in the summer of 2022, helping England chase big totals in the final innings of Tests.
Bairstow played in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians and scored 85 runs in 2 matches after he was drafted in for the IPL 2025 Playoffs, replacing English compatriot, Will Jacks.
His last stint in the IPL was with PBKS in 2024 where he played in 11 matches. The 35-year-old, however, has a respectable record in the IPL, mainly on the back of a strong profile with the Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2019 and 2021 and a superb 108 not out for PBKS in the league's record 262-run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

Australia ODIs In Sight, Rohit Sharma Starts Training With Former India Assistant Coach Abhishek Nayar

India ODI captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday started training at a suburban Mumbai facility with former national assistant coach Abhishek Nayar amid clamour for a "youth only" policy in the 50-over format following the success of the inexperienced Test squad in England. Rohit had taken a break from the game for a couple of months post the IPL as Indian men's team embarked on a difficult tour of England. He also announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the five Test series in England and is now a one format player. He was on a family holiday in England and came back last week. Rohit posted an Instagram story from a gymnasium with his close friend Nayar, who also at times doubles up as his personal coach. Nayar, who has also worked the likes of Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, Rinku Singh and young KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, was India's assistant coach batting till Champions Trophy, following which he was sacked. However, all those who have personally worked with Nayar have spoken about the changes he has brought in their games, including Rahul, who worked with him prior to the start of the England Test series where he scored 532 runs. The picture is an indication that Rohit is not in a mood to throw in the towel yet and would like to still believe that he would be good enough to play in the 50 over World Cup in 2027, still 26 months from now. The current national selection committee would want to ensure that a stable core is created for the 50 over set-up and with players who are available for the next two years. A school of thought in the Indian team management is that Rohit should be offered a farewell series and that should be Australia with Shubman Gill being announced as the new 50-over skipper. But how the selection committee and more so BCCI's influential office-bearers look at events is equally important. Rohit is an ODI legend with 32 hundreds, third highest in the all time list after Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49). For the record, Rohit was the 'Player of The Match' against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final. PTI KHS BS BS

No Women's World Cup Matches At Chinnaswamy Stadium? Report Makes Big 'Unsafe' Claim

Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium will no longer host any matches of the upcoming 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, according to a report. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has come under the scanner ever since a stampede killed 11 fans and injured scores of others, who had thronged the areas near the stadium to take part in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title celebration. Last week, the cabinet approved Justice John Michael D'Cunha's Commission verdict, which deemed the iconic venue "unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering". According to a report by India Today, the state government has refused to give clearance to the venue, citing serious safety concerns flagged by the court hearing last week. "Sources in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) confirmed that fixtures originally planned in the city, including the opening ceremony, will now be shifted to other venues. The decision follows the cabinet's approval of Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission's findings, which deemed the stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events," the report said. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to host the opening game and the final of the ICC Women's World Cup later this year, as well as the opening ceremony. The report also revealed that the KSCA has expressed its disappointment over the verdict, highlighting the stadium's record of successfully hosting over 750 matches and nearly 15 IPL seasons without incident. "Even our request to host matches without spectators was turned down," the report quoted a KSCA official as saying. This also comes after the venue was denied permission to host the KSCA Maharaj T20 Trophy. The fourth edition of the tournament was scheduled to be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium from August 11 to 28, but the failure to obtain a clearance certificate from the city police forced the association to shift the matches to the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Cricket Stadium in Mysuru.

Rajasthan Royals' Post On Sanju Samson Viral Amid Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders Trade Rumours

Rajasthan Royals (RR) Sanju Samson has been in the news of late, having reportedly expressed his desire to leave the franchise ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Cricbuzz recently reported that the differences between the two parties is so severed that the cricketer's family is openly saying that Samson does not want to continue with RR. "Serious differences have cropped up between Sanju Samson and the Royals management - so much so that the designated captain has formally requested to be traded or released into the auction," the report stated. "Members of Samson's family openly say that he no longer wishes to continue with the Royals. Some current IPL and international players close to him also indicate that his relationship with the franchise has not exactly been the way it used to be." Despite the rumours, Samson has remained tight-lipped over his future. During a recent interaction with former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, Samson laughed off the rumours and credited RR for playing a major role in shaping his career. Recently, RR took to social media and shared a post quoting Samson remark. "RR means the world to me," Samson had said on Ashwin's YouTube channel a few days back. — Rajasthan Royals (@rajasthanroyals) August 10, 2025 Reports have claimed that Samson has requested for a direct trade or a release ahead of the next IPL auction. Franchises like Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been linked to Samson in recent weeks. Samson, who was one of the five players retained by RR ahead of the mega auction, missed the majority of IPL 2025 due to an injury. RR crashed to a ninth-place finish in IPL 2025, which saw Riyan Parag captain the team on multiple occasions in Samson's absence. If Samson does leave RR, it would bring an end to their 11-year association.
