US sporting power backed by dope-tainted athletes; WADA raises red flag over 'Enhanced Games'

Time of Indiaa day ago

In a controversial move, the United States is set to host a multi-sport event known as the '
Enhanced Games
,' where athletes will be allowed to use performance-enhancing substances without being subjected to drug testing.
The bold initiative challenges traditional sporting norms and has sparked widespread debate over ethics, safety, and the future of competitive sports.
The inaugural edition of the event is scheduled to take place in
Las Vegas
from May 21 to 24, 2026. Officially launched last month, the Enhanced Games will consist of events in athletics, swimming, and weightlifting.

Winners of each event at the Games will receive a prize of $250,000, with an additional $1 million bonus awarded to any athlete who breaks a world record.
The lucrative prize pool is part of the organizers' strategy to attract elite competitors, despite widespread criticism of the event's permissive stance on performance-enhancing substances.

WHO IS ARON D'SOUZA?
According to the BBC, the Enhanced Games were founded by Aron D'Souza, who originally floated the idea of a pro-doping athletic competition. The controversial project is backed by a venture capital fund that includes high-profile investors such as Donald Trump Jr., son of the US President, and billionaire entrepreneur Peter Thiel.
CAN COCAINE AND HEROIN ALSO BE USED?
Participants in the Enhanced Games will be allowed to use certain substances that are banned in traditional elite sports; however, drugs such as cocaine and heroin will remain strictly prohibited, reported BBC.
Organizers have stated that some doping protocols will be conducted under medical supervision to ensure athlete safety.
Only substances approved by the
United States Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) will be permitted for use by participants in the Enhanced Games. This list differs significantly from the one maintained by the
World Anti-Doping Agency
(
WADA
), which governs substance use in elite sports.
ENHANCED GAMES MUST BE STOPPED: WADA
Reacting strongly to the announcement of the Enhanced Games, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) chief Witold Banka has urged US authorities to intervene and prevent the drug-fueled event from taking place next year.
Speaking in Lausanne during an address to Olympic officials, Banka condemned the concept of the Enhanced Games — scheduled for 2026 in Las Vegas — where athletes will be allowed to use performance-enhancing substances.
He declared that the event "must be stopped," warning that it poses a serious threat to the integrity and health standards of global sport.
"We all must stand up and condemn those who put greed and ego before the well-being of athletes and the values of fair competition," Banka said.
"As the
2028 Olympic Games
in Los Angeles approach, we cannot allow what should be a celebration of honest sporting endeavor to be overshadowed by this cynical attempt to undermine clean sport.
"WADA is now urging the authorities in the US to seek ways to prevent the Enhanced Games from going ahead as planned. For the sake of athletes' health and the purity of sport, it must be stopped."

Armand Duplantis sets new meet record at Oslo Diamond League with 6.15m pole vault

Armand Duplantis at the 2025 Oslo Diamond League meet. (Getty Images) Swedish pole vaulter Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis secured victory at the Diamond League meet in Oslo on Thursday, setting a new meet record of 6.15 meters in favourable weather conditions at the Bislett Stadium, continuing his dominance in the sport where he holds the world record of 6.27 meters. The US-born athlete, who won Olympic gold and broke the world record three times in 2024, maintains his position as the sport's leading figure, having recorded the 11 highest jumps in history. Duplantis was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for 2024, becoming only the second track and field athlete after Usain Bolt to receive this honour. "I am very satisfied. To get a stadium record here was in my plans after a few visits here with difficult conditions. It was great to finally get the right conditions tonight," Duplantis said. The competition began with Duplantis entering at 5.62 meters, while three competitors - Sondre Guttormsen, Ben Broeders, and Ernest John Obiena - failed to clear their initial heights. At 5.72 meters, three more vaulters - Sam Kendricks, Menno Vloon, and Ersu Sasma - were eliminated, while Renaud Lavillenie cleared the height on his final attempt before withdrawing. Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis successfully cleared 5.82 meters on their first attempts, while Kurtis Marschall failed to progress. Karalis was eliminated after three unsuccessful attempts at 5.92 meters, leaving Duplantis as the sole competitor. T he Swedish champion cleared 6.03 meters on his third attempt, surpassing his own 2022 meet record by one centimeter, before successfully vaulting 6.15 meters. "It did get cooler so that was why I stopped jumping. On Sunday in Stockholm it would be an absolute dream to break the world record. In fact I could retire if I do! At the moment the forecast is good for Sunday and I am feeling good, I am in good shape and tonight shows I am jumping well so who knows, it may be possible. I need to build on tonight and get ready now for the big one," Duplantis stated. The victory adds to Duplantis's impressive Diamond League record, where he has lost only four times in 40 meetings since 2020. His world record progression has been methodical, improving one centimeter at a time from 6.17 to 6.27 meters.

WTC Final: SA pacer Ngidi insists match ‘in balance' even as Cummins, Carey help AUS surge ahead on Day 2

Pat Cummins produced a sensational spell of four wickets for just one run to finish with figures out 6/28, helping Australia bowl South Africa out for just 138. Alex Carey's fighting 43 then helped the defending champions end Day 2 on 144/8 from 73/7. read more Australia captain Pat Cummins celebrates after dismissing his South African counterpart Temba Bavuma on Day 2 of the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord's. Reuters Australia captain Pat Cummins starred with the ball and Alex Carey made valuable runs following a dramatic collapse as the holders retained the advantage in the World Test Championship final against South Africa on Thursday. Fast bowler Cummins produced a sensational spell of four wickets for one run, sparking South Africa's collapse to 138 all out on the second day in reply to Australia's first innings total of 212 at Lord's. Australia collapsed to 73-7 in their second innings, with Kagiso Rabada (3-44) and Lungi Ngidi (3-35) doing the bulk of the damage. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD But Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc (16 not out) shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 61 before the wicketkeeper was lbw to Rabada shortly before the close. The last over of the day saw Starc dropped on 14 when Marco Jansen shelled a routine catch off Wiaan Mulder. At stumps Australia were 144-8, a potentially decisive lead of 218 runs. A remarkable 28 wickets fell in two days on a pitch which, while offering some assistance to the quicks, was by no means unplayable. But a match scheduled for five days, could now finish before the end of the third. 'In England when it's overcast, the ball seems to do a bit more,' Starc told the BBC. 'Everyone is quick to jump on the batters but you've got to notice the good bowling from both sides.' Ngidi, meanwhile, insisted South Africa were still in the game. 'It's in the balance right now,' he said. 'Two wickets in hand, if we can knock those over and maybe chase 225, people are going to get their money's worth.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rabada, who had taken 5-51 in the first innings, tormented Australia again with two wickets in the 11th over. He had Usman Khawaja caught behind for six and, two balls later, removed Cameron Green for a duck following the number three's four in the first innings. Wickets continued to tumble after tea. Left-arm quick Jansen had Marnus Labuschagne, in his first Test as an opener, caught behind for 22. And Australia's 44-3 became 48-4 next over when Beau Webster, who top-scored in Australia's first innings with 72, fell lbw to Ngidi. 'Led from the front' Australia were reeling at 73-7 after Cummins was bowled off his pad by an excellent Ngidi yorker. But Carey and Starc led a defiant response that kept their side on course to retain the title. Earlier, Cummins finished with figures of 6-28 as he reached 300 career Test wickets and secured a coveted place on the Lord's honours board with a five-wicket haul. 'He does it time and time again,' said Starc of Cummins. 'He led from the front before he was captain and now as captain as well. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The quality and skills he has in his pocket – I'm thrilled for him to get a bagful. To go to 300 is a special effort.' South Africa lost their last five wickets for 12 runs as Cummins ripped through the batting order. Only South Africa captain Temba Bavuma (36) and David Bedingham (45) offered meaningful resistance during a fifth-wicket stand of 64. After lunch, Cummins struck four times in a mere 17 balls of devastating pace bowling. South Africa had resumed on Thursday at 43-4, battling to put enough runs on the board. Bavuma, who faced 37 balls for his overnight three not out, changed gears with a lofted cover-drive for four off left-arm quick Starc before pulling Cummins for six. Cummins had his revenge, however, when Bavuma's checked drive was brilliantly caught at cover by a diving Labuschagne. He then dismissed Kyle Verreynne lbw for 13 and, three balls later, held a simple return catch as Jansen fell for a duck. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Australia skipper ended the innings with his 300th Test wicket, Rabada well caught low down at deep square leg by Webster.
