'She Wanted Justice': Silence, Fear Grip Balasore's FM College After Student's Self-Immolation

Outside the college gates, posters demanding justice for her and candlelight tributes reflect the anguish engulfing the campus.
Named after the renowned Odia social reformer Fakir Mohan Senapati, Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College is considered one of the premier educational institutions in North Odisha. Established in 1944, it was among the only seven colleges set up during British Odisha and remains a landmark of Balasore with deep historical significance.
Today, however, the institution's reputation lies shattered. A 20-year-old girl died, days after she set herself on fire after allegedly being cornered and denied justice. Outside the college gates, posters demanding justice for her and candlelight tributes reflect the anguish engulfing the campus. Inside, a heavy police presence and an eerie silence indicate that something deeply troubling occurred within these walls, pushing her to take such an extreme step.
Guards stood quietly at their posts. When approached by this reporter, one guard said, 'She was a good girl, very helpful. But we don't know anything. We can't say anything."
The spot where she attempted self-immolation was right in front of the Principal's office. Faculty members and students nearby were reluctant to speak, adding to the unsettling silence.
Dilip Kumar, a faculty member passing by, stopped and spoke to News18. 'No one could ever imagine that a student would take such a step. This has never happened in our college's history. We are stunned. Now we are hearing that the Principal delayed the enquiry report despite serious allegations. That day, she demanded justice. She wanted a solution – an immediate solution. We are shell-shocked. Admissions and all academic activities have come to a halt. We don't know who is protecting whom."
A sense of fear looms large on campus. Fear of whom or what remains unclear. But one thing is evident – this young woman felt completely cornered. She was an active student leader of ABVP. ABVP leaders told News18 that they had taken up her case but claimed the Principal was adamant about shielding the accused professor.
'She wanted justice, but she felt cornered. That is why she took this drastic step," said a person who knew her, adding that the Principal's behaviour further shattered her confidence.
Candlelight marches have begun in Balasore demanding justice for her. But the question remains – will she get it?

'Your Computer Is At Risk': How Fake Call Centres In Chandigarh Tricity Duped Foreigners

Last Updated: The ED claimed to have busted a major tech fraud racket, following midnight raids on illegal call centres that were duping foreign nationals via spoofing and brand impersonation Pop-up messages, cloned websites, and fake support hotlines, with text as cliche as 'your computer is at risk" – this is how illegal call centres in Chandigarh Tricity played on their victims' fears, most of whom were elderly or non-tech savvy foreign clients. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed to have busted a major tech fraud racket, following midnight searches on illegal call centres in the Chandigarh Tricity area under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). It said these entities duped foreign nationals with spoofing and brand impersonation as a core strategy. According to top ED sources, these entities systematically impersonated global tech brands to cheat foreign customers, funnelling proceeds through structured shell companies, spoof websites, payment gateways, and later laundering them via banking channels and hawala. The operations were professionally disguised and run under the garb of BPO and IT services, the sources told News18. The ED sources said entities like Visionaire and Terrasparq have been operational since 2016, showing the longevity and adaptive nature of these networks. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? The sources said Faisal Rashid Peerzada, director of FSAL Technologies Pvt Ltd, was involved in spoofing, fund control, backend operations. Arshdeep, director of Bios Webtech (US entity) and a close aide of Faisal, helped mask Indian control. They said Sahu Jain, director of Visionaire and Terrasparq, had been operational since 2016 and was linked to US firm CTS Mobility owned by his sister Priya, who was a potential overseas conduit. This is not an isolated scam but a tech-enabled, well-orchestrated fraud ecosystem. They were using front companies in India, showing a calculated effort to evade domestic scrutiny. It also suggested centralised orchestration by Faisal and Jain, they added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Right-wing activists thrash NGO members over suspicion of religious conversion

Agency: Indore, Jul 24 (PTI) Right-wing activists on Thursday allegedly bashed up members of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Indore over suspicion of religious conversions, showed a video that surfaced in the public domain. The NGO has denied the charge, stressing that it works across various sectors for rural uplift. No police complaint concerning the alleged assault has been received yet, an official said. The alleged incident took place outside the Indore Press Club premises, where Howl Group founder Sourav Banerjee and other members of the NGO had arrived to address a press conference on the allegations. Two women associated with the NGO were also present. A group of individuals disrupted the press conference, creating a commotion. When he and others stepped out of the venue, they were assaulted by right-wing workers, who accused the NGO of indulging in religious conversion, showed a video. 'We have been working in Shukrawasa village of Dewas district for the past five years in areas such as education, healthcare, employment and legal aid. The suspicion around (religious) conversion is completely baseless," Banerjee told reporters. Banerjee said the right-wing activists assaulted the NGO members without any evidence. 'Let them bring even a single person whom our NGO has converted," he challenged. He alleged that some 'corrupt and anti-social elements" in Shukrawasa were spreading rumours against the organisation and obstructing their work for personal gain. Meanwhile, local Bajrang Dal leader Avinash Kaushal, who was present at the site, alleged that the NGO was converting innocent Hindu villagers to Christians and had 'brainwashed" some youths into distancing themselves from their families. Ravindra Parashar, in charge of the Central Kotwali police station, said no formal complaint has been received from any party regarding the incident outside the Press Club premises. Man held for throwing his son into borewell in Jaipur

Agency: Jaipur, Jul 24 (PTI) Apparently disturbed over his son's illness and his wife leaving him, a man allegedly threw his toddler son into a borewell here claiming that he was dead, police said on Thursday. The incident took place late Wednesday night in Deepola village of Jaipur district. The accused father, identified as Lalit, appeared to be frustrated over his 18-month-old son's illness and domestic tensions, including his wife's prolonged stay at her parental home, said Station House Officer Jamwa Ramgarh Rampal Sharma. Local informed the police, which started a rescue operation as soon as they reached the spot. They lowered a camera into the borewell. It was not clear whether the child survived or died. According to police, Lalit visited a doctor on Wednesday and got medicines for his son. 'He claimed that his son died last night and after this he threw the boy in the borewell after wrapping him in a white cloth. He said this to his brother. When locals got information about it, police were informed," the SHO told reporters. 'Lalit is under detention and being questioned. Initially, he said that he was disturbed as his wife had left home after a dispute nearly a month ago and is presently living with her parents," he said.
