Alessia Russo's feelings as England Lionesses star's brother enters Love Island

Daily Mirror5 hours ago

Alessia Russo is set to lead the line for England in the upcoming Women's European Championships but her brother - once a budding footballer himself - faces a different summer
As Arsenal and England star Alessia Russo prepares to lead her country's charge at the upcoming European Championships, her brother faces a rather different summer. While Alessia is in Switzerland with the Lionesses, Gio Russo will be on Love Island.
Gio (short for Giorgio) was once a budding footballer himself, playing for a number of non-league clubs, and has a big interest in sport himself. However, as the reality show star explained, his sister is also a Love Island fan.

"She's really excited, she watches every year and reckons I can do well so she's excited to see how I get on," Gio told ITV. With Gio looking for love, he has also outlined the need for any potential partner to be into sport.

"My sister plays pro football, so being interested in sport, they don't have to know football or understand it, but if they can show some sort of interest because it is such a prominent thing in our family," he said. "It would be hard if they hated it.
"Other green flags are having a nice family, I'm sick of being the 7th wheel in my own family!" added Gio ahead of his late addition to the show, which began on June 9.
The timing of the reality show meand Gio could miss a great deal of Alessia's involvement at the Euros. England begin their campaign against France on July 5, with The Netherlands and Wales rounding off the group.
England and France were also paired together in qualifying, with Alessia scoring for Sarina Wiegman's team during a victory in Saint-Etienne. The Arsenal star scored four times for the Lionesses as they won the Euros on home soil in 2022, and was England's top scorer in qualifying for the 2025 tournament with three.
Wiegman's team have a farewell friendly on Sunday, at home to Jamaica at the King Power Stadium. Alessia Russo scored in England's most recent game, a UEFA Nations League match away to Spain, though that ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Gio, isn't the only islander with football connections. Dejon Noel-Williams, son of former Watford striker Gifton and a Grenada international footballer in his own right, is also part of the line-up.
"I've met all kinds of famous people through him," said Dejon, who works as a personal trainer and semi-pro footballer. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. I've met David Beckham, he was really nice."

Arsenal ‘mess' around Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres explained

Could Arsenal yet choose to prioritise an alternative centre-forward? It is still possible. They have continued to be linked with Ollie Watkins, the subject of a failed bid in January, but sources insist another offer for the Aston Villa striker is now unlikely. Arsenal have also looked at Brighton's João Pedro, as revealed by Telegraph Sport earlier this summer, among other attackers in Europe. As well as signing a No 9, Arsenal also want to strengthen their attack by adding a new winger. Long-term target Nico Williams is seemingly heading elsewhere, although any move for the Spaniard was always going to be extremely complicated financially. If there is a deal to be done for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, Arsenal would be keen to do it. The Brazilian international is seen as one of Europe's most exciting wide players and his future at Madrid is far from clear. A move for the 24-year-old, if Arsenal are encouraged to make an offer, would not be expected to happen until much later in the window. Another potential winger target could be Chelsea's Noni Madueke. Telegraph Sport revealed last week that Madueke is on Arsenal's radar, although the strength of their interest remains unclear. Partey yet to be offered new deal Arsenal would almost certainly need another new central midfielder if Partey leaves the club as a free agent this summer. The 32-year-old ideally wants to stay at Arsenal but, as it stands, no agreement has been reached over a new deal. Partey is known to have interest from other clubs in Europe and in the Middle East, and he may find a more lucrative contract in another league. For all the focus on new signings, Arsenal are also keen to use this summer as a chance to reward their existing stars with new deals. Bukayo Saka and William Saliba are both in line for extensions, while Arsenal are finalising a new contract for teenage sensation Myles Lewis-Skelly. Ethan Nwaneri, another academy graduate, is also in talks over a new deal. The departure of Kieran Tierney and uncertainty over the futures of Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko will likely necessitate a defensive signing, too. Arsenal are long-term admirers of Ajax defender Jorrel Hato (Telegraph Sport first reported on their interest in January 2024) and have been linked with making another move for the Dutchman this summer. It remains to be seen whether they choose to rival other clubs for Hato's signature. Clearly, there is plenty of work to be done this summer. Arsenal may not have announced any signings yet, but their supporters should not worry. The wheels are in motion.

Tommy Fury recalls what he really thought of Jake Paul before fight

The former Love Island star has traded verbal jibes with the YouTuber-turned-boxer over the years before finally settling their rivalry back in 2023 Tommy Fury has admitted that he did not know who Jake Paul was after he was called out by the 'Problem Child' nearly four years ago. The pair have traded barbs online over the last few years before finally settling their rivalry two years ago. At one point, the fight seemed destined to never take place. The bout was initially due to take place back in December 2021, but with just under a week until the first bell, the Brit withdrew due to an injury and a medical problem. ‌ Nearly a year later, the dust-up was rebooked. However, just weeks to go until the bout, Fury pulled out once more - this time citing visa issues which were preventing him from entering the United States. The clash was booked for a third time in 2023 and they pair finally traded leather. Despite being knocked down in the final round, Fury would go on to score a victory on points. ‌ Despite their iconic rivalry, Fury surprisingly admitted he did not know who Paul was at first - despite the American's large following on social media. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Beast podcast hosted by Eddie Hall, when asked how the Paul fight came about, Fury replied: "Tyson (Fury) again. Funnily enough. I was boxing on a Frank Warren show in London during lockdown and they put me as co-main along with the main event. I boxed, I won, it was good. Then Tyson put up the ratings on Twitter... he screenshotted the ratings and he put them up and he tagged Jake Paul." In typical Paul fashion, the 28-year-old was quick to respond to Fury's post, before 'TNT' went back-and-forth in a verbal spat with the 'Problem Child' before finally settling their differences in the ring."At this time, Jake Paul was making a little bit of noise in the boxing ring and he just started," Fury continued "Obviously Tyson, being Tyson, he got on a video and went 'you think you are a boxer do you? Well, look at Tommy's ratings. Come and fight him!' I thought 'ok!' I did not even know who Jake Paul was at this stage because he was not a boxer at this point. Jake replied and he said 'oh Tommy, if you want to fight, do no get your big brother to call me out... do it yourself!' And I thought 'ok, here we go. This is where it is starting!' "Then I jumped on the internet and went 'I do not need anybody to call you out, I am right here and I am going to fight you... no problem!' And then it just escalated into a social media war. Loads of fights that should have happened didn't and it finally came off. It was a two year battle... calling each other every single day on social media, a lot of bad blood, a lot of hype around the fight and a lot of interest." Since their initial encounter, the duo have frequently exchanged jibes online in an attempt to set up a rematch. However, so far, no rematch has been confirmed. Paul triumphed over Mike Tyson in his most recent fight in November and is set to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr this weekend. A victory against the Mexican would undoubtedly fuel speculation about a second bout with the former Love Island star.
