EA Tried to Stop an ‘Anti-DEI Mod' for ‘The Sims 4'—but More Keep Surfacing

WIRED15-05-2025

May 15, 2025 4:10 PM The download automatically changed Black NPCs to white, trans NPCs to cis-gendered, and gay NPCs to straight. And it's just the beginning. Photo-Illustration:A mod for The Sims 4 that removed LGBT and Black nonplayable characters (NPCs) from the game and automatically changed them to 'straight' and 'white,' respectively, has reappeared in spite of EA's attempts to shut it down. WIRED has found dozens of similar racist, homophobic, and antisemitic mods for other popular games.
The Sims mod, called DEI Remover 1.0.0, was first made available in March last year, but it recently blew up after @DanielleBuilds, a Sims creator with over 300,000 followers, posted a screenshot of it on Facebook and asked people to report it. In addition to removing Black NPCs, the mod was designed to make NPCs 'healthy, (not fat),' switched colorful hair types to 'natural' hair colors, and changed any LGBT couples sharing a home in the game to siblings. A photo accompanying an overview of the mod shows NPC Celeste Michaelson, who is Black and trans, being changed to a white woman.
An admin on the video game forum RPGHQ said that they received a request from the IP enforcement department of EA to delist the mod. The admin, who goes by the user name 'Rusty Shackleford,' described this as an act of targeted censorship, and included screenshots of what they said was correspondence with EA.
'I write on behalf of Electronic Arts Inc. ("EA"). It has come to our attention that you are hosting material that infringes copyrights owned or controlled by EA,' reads the screenshotted email, said to be from EA's IP senior counsel Lisa Chin. The email identifies the DEI Remover mod as the 'infringing material.' EA has not responded to WIRED's request for comment.
On May 6, the original post moved to a new thread, where the mod was reposted with a copyright disclaimer for 'Fair Use' along with instructions for downloading it. Some commenters cheered and jeered the repost, with one saying 'cut off one head, two more shall take its place. heil hydra,' and another saying, 'Yea I'm sure antagonizing litigious publishers will work out well.'
The Sims has a track record of culture and LGBT representation going back over a decade. In 2023 the franchise featured the Celeste Michaelson NPC in the expansion pack Growing Together, while in 2022 it featured a lesbian couple on the cover of the My Wedding Stories game pack. That same year, The Sims 4 provided a free update to allow users to add gender identity to their game with customizable pronouns, and in April 2025, the game released free downloadable content featuring LGBT-themed clothes and decor. The franchise has also released items to help celebrate holidays in the past, such as Juneteenth-themed clothing, Christmas trees, Hanukkah menorahs, and Kwanzaa kinaras.
Meanwhile sites like Patreon continue to host mods that erase this diversity in The Sims 4. In addition to DEI Remover, RPGHQ hosts dozens of controversial mods for other games, including a mod called 'Balduran Salutes Hitler' for Baldur's Gate 3, and 'Negro Remover' for Stalker 2 . WIRED found one Patreon account from December featuring a mod that switches out inclusive language, such as changing 'spouse' to 'husband and wife,' and removes the pronouns on premade sims. That Patreon creator explained they created it because the franchise had 'fully embraced the pronouns (sic) idiocy.' WIRED has reached out to Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World, and Patreon, and has not received a response.
Video game mods allow users to download third-party add-ons created by other players that affect the gameplay experience. For the PC and Mac versions of The Sims 4 , mods have become integral to the Sims community as a whole, giving players free access to custom content like clothing, furniture, and artwork, and in-game capabilities such as functional banks, preschools, and adult content.
Many in the modding Sims communities were up in arms over the DEI Remover mod. One TikTok user said they were inspired to start a new series called 'F You, Sims Community.' Comments echoed her frustrations, with one commenter saying, 'may everyone who downloads this experience the worst save corruption bugs.'
The quick replacement of the banned Sims 4 mod demonstrates that keeping on top of the issue can be like playing a game of Whac-A-Mole.
While this mod was created last year, President Donald Trump's executive orders targeting DEI initiatives have contributed to a more hostile climate for marginalized Americans.
While modding has been a key element within the franchise for decades, EA's mod policy states that it has the right to 'address any inappropriate Mods, including Mods that infringe the intellectual property or privacy rights of others, contain obscene, objectionable, or harmful content, jeopardize the integrity of The Sims 4 gameplay, or otherwise violate the EA User Agreement.'

USWNT honors former captain Becky Sauerbrunn with bobbleheads, fireworks and a dominant win

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Former U.S. women's national team defender Becky Sauerbrunn got a hometown hero's welcome on Tuesday at Energizer Park ahead of, during and after the U.S. defeated Jamaica 4-0 to close out a successful international window. Having retired from professional soccer last December after a 16-year career, the former captain returned not only as part of TNT's broadcast crew covering the USWNT's friendly, but also to receive a proper sendoff. Advertisement 'I'm not used to having a lot of spotlight on me for something like this, but it's really about celebrating the people who got you here,' Sauerbrunn told reporters Monday. For someone who's never been entirely comfortable in the spotlight, Tuesday night must've been overwhelming — in a good way. Sauerbrunn was born in St. Louis, Mo., and developed her game there as a budding talent until she left for the University of Virginia in 2003. Her hometown sent her off in style with a celebration that included fireworks, a very realistic bobblehead, a standing ovation and a birthday cake (she turns 40 years old on June 6) fit for a legend. 'You know you've made it when you've got a bobblehead,' U.S. head coach Emma Hayes told reporters in her pre-match press conference. A post shared by The Athletic Full Time (@tafulltime) A commanding presence at center back, Sauerbrunn earned 219 appearances with the U.S., anchoring the team's backline to two FIFA Women's World Cup titles and a 2012 Olympic gold medal. It's quite a legacy for someone who never sought the spotlight. And it's one the current USWNT squad deeply respects and hopes to carry forward. As the team bid farewell to Sauerbrunn off the field, the next generation made sure she had no reason to worry about the future on it. Hayes's squad delivered a dominant 4-0 win over Jamaica, applying relentless pressure for 90 minutes with 82 percent possession and allowing only two shots from the opposition. Though the accomplished defender never got her goal for the U.S., Sauerbrunn came very close two years ago at the same stadium that bid her goodbye. On Tuesday, it was rookie Ally Sentnor who scored twice in the first half and Sauerbrunn's close friend Lynn Biyendolo who added two more as soon as she came on after the break. Meanwhile, the backline, Saurebrunn's old territory, was anchored by captain Naomi Girma, a fitting torchbearer for the legacy left behind. Advertisement 'I know I just said nobody can (fill Becky's shoes), but I think the next obvious person would be Naomi,' Biyendolo said. 'The two things that they have in common are that they didn't want the role, but it just found them. And I think that makes the best leaders, is somebody who just doesn't want it, but it's so natural at it.' Girma, the most expensive transfer in women's soccer history, had a rocky start at Chelsea after joining in January, sidelined by a string of injuries. However, she is back and delivering. With both a Women's Super League title and an FA Cup under her belt, she is proving to be worth every penny. As Hayes put it, bringing her back 'is like getting the Rolls-Royce out of the garage.' Girma told that she thinks 'Becky was one of the best leaders this team has ever had.' That kind of legacy doesn't happen overnight. Listening to her former teammates after the match, it was clear: the trust and respect Sauerbrunn commands were built over years of grit, consistency, and quiet leadership, beginning with her debut in 2008, when she earned her first cap against Canada at the Four Nations Tournament in China, playing through the match with a broken nose. 'Becky is a legend, an icon,' Kerry Abello, who made her debut for the U.S. on Tuesday, said after the match. 'The game of women's soccer will never be the same without her.' Abello was only nine years old when Sauerbrunn debuted in 2008. Like many new generation of USWNT players, she grew up looking up to her. On the pitch, Sauerbrunn was a tireless, dependable center back; off it, she was a steady leader who played a key role in collective bargaining negotiations with the U.S. Soccer, representing her teammates at the table year after year, and helping the team achieve equal pay. She was always calm and composed, even when one of her teammates messed up. 'Becky doesn't get mad often, but if you mess up, like pass to the wrong player… she'll give you this look,' Biyendolo said after the match. 'That 'I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed' look. That's the Becky look.' A post shared by U.S. Soccer WNT (@uswnt) Ask anyone who played alongside Sauerbrunn about the 'Becky stare,' and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. Hayes didn't get the chance to coach Sauerbrunn—she took over the U.S. team in May 2024— but her admiration also runs deep, especially for how the defender has shaped the next generation. Advertisement 'It's always nice when the people you leave behind talk about someone in such a way,' Hayes said. 'I can say this without hesitation, I've got a locker room not just the senior players, but less experienced players that talk about her in the highest esteem, both as a leader and as a human being, and I don't think you could want anything more than that in life.'

Here's how to buy a Switch 2 at launch

The Switch 2 has finally arrived — well, at least in some parts of the world. Nintendo's latest console officially launches in the US tomorrow, June 5th, bringing with it more processing power, a larger 7.9-inch LCD display, and an all-new racing title in the form of Mario Kart World. Preorders for the $449 hybrid console remain sold out; however, if you're looking to grab one on launch day, rest assured that a handful of retailers have announced availability, both in-store and online. So far, Walmart, GameStop, Best Buy, and Target have all confirmed that they will have limited console stock on Thursday, June 5th. The same retailers will also offer the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Switch 2 camera, first-party carrying cases, and other accessories that are set to launch alongside the console later this week. We'll be publishing a ton of Switch-related coverage in the coming days — including our full Switch 2 review —but in the meantime, we've rounded up all the details you need to know if you want to attempt to secure a console on day one. After all, there's no telling what post-launch availability will be like, despite Nintendo's attempts to build up an inventory of its next-gen portable system to meet demand. Walmart Walmart customers will be able to snag a Nintendo Switch 2 at Walmart Supercenters starting on June 5th at 12AM ET / June 4th at 9PM PT, while supplies last. Online orders will open at the same time, with stock subject to availability. Walmart has confirmed its launch day slate will include the standalone Switch 2 ($449) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499), along with games and the following accessories: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54) Hori's Piranha Plant Camera ($59) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.88) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.88) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59) GameStop GameStop will have additional Switch 2 stock available both in-store and online when the console launches on June 5th. In-store launch events will kick off at 3PM local time on June 4th, with in-store pickups beginning on June 5th at 12AM EST / June 4th at 9PM PST. Online orders will also open on June 5th at 12AM ET/ June 4th at 9PM PT, according to GameStop spokesperson Nicolle Robles. GameStop hasn't detailed which console configurations will be available at launch, but we can assume the retailer will offer both the standalone console ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99), as well as games like Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ($79.99). We can also anticipate GameStop offering the following accessories: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54.99) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.99) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84.99) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59.99) Best Buy As detailed on Best Buy's landing page for the Switch 2, 'most stores will have a limited inventory of systems, games, and accessories for in-store purchase' beginning on June 5th at 12:01AM ET / June 4th at 9:01PM PT. Best Buy has stipulated that it anticipates people lining up ahead of the console's midnight release, including those who previously preordered the standalone console ($449.99) or the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) and are showing up for in-store pickup. A number of Switch 2 games and accessories will also be available to purchase online at launch; however, the retailer has specified that it will not be opening online orders for the console itself during launch week. Target If you missed the initial preorder window, Target has confirmed that it will offer both the standalone Switch 2 ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) in-store on launch day, with online orders opening in the 'early morning' on June 6th. Consoles will be limited to one per guest, and according to its FAQ, there will be a 'designated queuing location' for customers to line up before stores open on June 5th. Target employees will distribute physical or digital tickets either until all tickets have been claimed or 10 minutes prior to opening. If you do manage to obtain one, your console purchase is guaranteed. As expected, Target will offer 'additional software, amiibo and accessories' while supplies last. The retailer wasn't clear on which accessories will be available on June 5th, though based on preorder availability, we expect the following:
