Thousands to join US ‘Fight the Trump Takeover' protests against Republican redistricting plans

Americans in dozens of states are staging rallies Saturday against plans by US President Donald Trump and Republican leaders to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, The Guardian reported.
The demonstrations, held under the banner 'Fight the Trump Takeover', are taking place in at least 34 states. The largest event is in Austin, Texas, where Trump has supported a mid-decade redistricting plan that could give Republicans five extra seats in Congress.

Other states may also redraw their districts. According to The Guardian, Republican leaders in Florida, Missouri and Ohio are weighing similar moves, while California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has said he will launch a counter-redistricting effort.
The Democratic National Committee is supporting today's protests. It said: 'From coast to coast, people will be showing up at their statehouses, city halls, and community spaces to make it clear – we see what Trump is doing, and we won't stand for it.'
Activist groups such as Indivisible, MoveOn and Planned Parenthood are also involved. Ezra Levin of Indivisible told The Guardian: 'In the fight against authoritarianism, not every single protest needs to match the scale of the one before it. What matters is sustaining the pressure.'
Drucilla Tigner, of Texas For All, added: 'Though this fight started in Texas, it doesn't end here. This isn't just about redistricting or one state's politics. It's about the future of our democracy.'

World record: Ukrainian's 'ghost' snipers kill Russian soldiers from 4 km; AI and drone-assisted rifle used

Representative Image (AI-generated) A Ukrainian sniper unit reportedly set a new world record on Thursday for the longest confirmed sniper kill, striking Russian forces from over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). The shot, fired using a Ukrainian-made rifle and assisted by artificial intelligence and drone guidance, killed two Russian soldiers near Pokrovsk, Ukraine, Fox news reported quoting the Kyiv Post. Military journalist Yuri Butusov said the record-breaking shot occurred on August 14 using a 14.5 mm alligator rifle under the guidance of an unmanned aerial vehicle system. The attack happened amid intensified Russian assaults in the Pokrovsk area, a city that once had more than 60,000 residents. The previous record was held by a 58-year-old Ukrainian sniper who eliminated a target from around 12,400 feet (3,800 meters). The record-breaking shot occurred a day before President Donald Trump 's closely watched summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin . During a joint press conference, Putin described the talks as conducted in a 'constructive atmosphere of mutual respect.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington DC on Monday. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said that the two leaders will 'discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.'

Congress Should Check Voter Lists Now, quips Chandrashekhar Bawankule

Nagpur: Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has attacked the Congress over their allegations regarding voter lists. "The upcoming local self govt elections in the next few months will be held on the same voter lists on which the assembly elections were conducted. Therefore, if Congress leaders have any objections, they should raise them with the Election Commission right now. They should not blame the voter lists for their failure after losing elections," quipped Bawankule on Sunday. Speaking to the media, Bawankule said voter lists are always released before elections. At that time, all parties are given time to raise objections. During the assembly elections, lists were posted at a lakh booths in Maharashtra. "At that time, no Congress leader raised any objection. They didn't raise objections even during the election period. However, 7 months after the elections, Rahul Gandhi raised objections," he said. "When 31 Congress MPs were elected in Maharashtra, they didn't raise any objection; at that time the voter lists were correct. Congress party has objections only where BJP wins. However, our 2.5 lakh beloved sisters voted for us, we waived electricity bills of 45 lakh farmers, they voted for us. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Also, in Kamptee assembly constituency, we conducted new voter registration by setting up 17,000 booths. This increased voters by 34,000. An increase in votes doesn't mean voter lists are incorrect," said Bawankule. He further appealed to Rahul Gandhi that if he still has doubts, he should check the voter lists for the upcoming local self govt elections, and he should deploy his workers in Maharashtra for this work. When asked about Mahayuti contesting local self govt elections together, Bawankule said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, state BJP president Ravindra Chavan and other leaders have given instructions to contest within Mahayuti. However, where it's not possible, instructions have been given to local leaders to ensure that friendly fights do not harm Mahayuti, he clarified. Speaking about above-average rainfall in the state, he said instructions have been given to conduct panchnamas and provide compensation according to SDRF and NDRF criteria. He also said orders have been given to district magistrates to remove unauthorized churches built for religious conversions in several tribal districts, including Nandurbar. ‘Historic decision': Zelensky hails US offer of security guarantees to Ukraine

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday hailed the United States' offer of security guarantees as a 'historic decision', a day before his meeting with US President Donald Trump. Zelensky called the 'coalition of the willing' meeting on Sunday 'very useful'.(AP) This comes after US envoy Steve Witkoff hinted that the US was prepared to commit to security guarantees. 'Security guarantees as a result of our joint work must be truly very practical and provide protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and must also be developed with Europe's participation,' Zelensky said. He further called the 'coalition of the willing' meeting on Sunday 'very useful'. The meeting, held via video conferencing, was attended by a group of Ukraine's allies, including Britain, France and Germany. Zelensky said that all parties agreed that state borders must not be changed by force. The Ukrainian president reiterated the resolution of the key issues in the Russia Ukraine conflict in a 'trilateral format', which includes Russia, Ukraine and US. Trump could offer a NATO-like protection to Ukraine, and Russia is open to the idea, one of his top foreign policy officials told Reuters on Sunday. This comes before the meeting between Trump and Zelensky, who will be joined by the European leaders. 'We were able to win the following concession, that the United States could offer Article 5-like protection,' Witkoff earlier told CNN's "State of the Union" program. He said that the US can offer an Article 5 protection, adding that it was the first time that Russia had agreed to something like this. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty regards an attack on any one of its 32 member nations as an attack on all. Witkoff hinted that a security guarantee of this scale could be extended to Ukraine in lieu of NATO membership, which Putin has objected to. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had also accompanied Trump to Alaska for the summit with Putin, said in an interview with the CNN that the talks had 'made some progress'. 'Ultimately, where this should lead is to a meeting between the three leaders, between Zelensky, Putin and President Trump, where we can finalize, but we got to get this thing closer before we get to that point,' Rubio said.
