5 Underrated College Football Transfers Who Could Shine in 2025

Miami Herald23-07-2025
The transfer portal continues to reshape college football. While the biggest names grab the headlines, several overlooked players are in position to make a major impact this fall. These five transfers might not be getting national attention - yet - but don't be surprised if they become household names by season's end.
Brown brings a dangerous mix of speed and experience to LSU after three standout seasons at Kentucky. The former top-300 recruit from Nashville totaled 1,528 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, while also becoming one of the most explosive return men in the country. His five career kickoff return touchdowns lead all active FBS players. Now in Baton Rouge, Brown is expected to be a key piece in a loaded Tigers offense.
Davis was quietly one of the top defensive backs in the Pac-12 last season. He broke up 15 passes and didn't allow a single touchdown in coverage. After withdrawing from the portal once already, Davis made the move to Washington and will now anchor a secondary that needs playmakers in its first year as a Big Ten member.
A two-sport athlete and former blue-chip recruit, Robinson showed flashes of his potential at USC with 747 receiving yards and seven scores across two seasons. He heads to Tallahassee with a chance to become a key weapon in Florida State's vertical passing game. His size and athleticism will give defenses fits, especially in red-zone situations.

Fields might be one of the most reliable wideouts in the country that few talked about. He caught 113 passes for 1,619 yards and 10 touchdowns the past two seasons at Virginia. At 6-foot-4, he gives the Irish a big-bodied target who can win contested catches and move the chains.
After dominating the FCS level, Gronowski brings a proven track record to Iowa. He accounted for over 12,000 total yards and 130 touchdowns at South Dakota State, capturing the Walter Payton Award in 2023. If Iowa's offense takes a step forward this season, the experienced dual-threat quarterback will likely be the reason why.

Hollywood Brown returns to State Farm Stadium as member of Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs' only former Cardinals player is Hollywood Brown, but he won't likely play in the preseason opener. The Arizona Cardinals will face the Kansas City Chiefs in their preseason opener Saturday night at State Farm Stadium at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. Arizona time). It will be a bit of a homecoming for one former Cardinals player. Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown will be returning to State Farm Stadium since he signed with Kansas City last offseason. Brown played two seasons for the Cardinals. They acquired him in a draft-day trade in 2022. In two seasons, he played in 24 games, missing eight games to different injuries, caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He is the only former Cardinals player on the Chiefs' offseason roster. However, Brown might not get to play. He has been nursing an ankle injury he suffered last week. The Chiefs starters will start the game against the Cardinals starters, but we shouldn't expect to see Brown suit up. NASCAR post-race weekend penalty report after Iowa

NASCAR post-race weekend penalty report after Iowa originally appeared on The Sporting News There was nothing major on the NASCAR penalty report from over the weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway beyond one Xfinity Series loose or unsecured post-race lug nut infraction. Taylor Gray, crew chief Jason Ratcliff and the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 team was hit with a $5000 fine for the offense. As per section 8.8.10.4a in the NASCAR Rule Book, this infraction was met with a $5000 fine to the organization. There were no penalties from the Cup Series weekend. This is a notable update because the cars driven by Denny Hamlin, Ross Chastain, Ryan Blaney and Alex Bowman were taken back to the NASCAR R&D Center for a random inspection but that turned up no infractions. Two Iowa football stars named preseason All-Americans

The Iowa Hawkeyes are littered with talent up and down their roster on offense, defense, and special teams. With a veteran presence, as they carry most years, the Hawkeyes retained some key contributors for another year and are seeing them receive proper notoriety. Two of those key pieces returning are kick and punt return specialist Kaden Wetjen and offensive lineman Gennings Dunker. Both are expected to continue their success at Iowa with big years in 2025. Wetjen and Dunker helped Iowa win games in 2024, and the same will be expected from them this year. With the expectations on them, both of the Iowa stars have been named Sporting News preseason All-Americans. Both were named to the second team. Kaden Wetjen flashed his magic last year for Iowa on special teams. The return specialist put on a show when he touched the ball and made opponents pay for kicking it to him. Wetjen returned 26 kickoffs, averaging 28 yards per return with a touchdown, and returned 26 punts for 12.6 yards per return with another touchdown. Gennings Dunker figures to be a staple on an Iowa offensive line that could be the catalyst of their success this year. He enters his fourth year with the program with 34 games and 25 starts under his belt. His experience and dependability will be called on by Iowa's offense all season long.
