Hours after the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced "a major new initiative" for collaboration with Mexico to target criminal gatekeepers controlling cross-border smuggling routes, Mexico's president flatly denied that any such agreement exists.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking at her morning news conference Tuesday, rejected the DEA's description of "Project Portero," which the agency unveiled a day earlier as a "flagship operation" aimed at disrupting the networks moving drugs, firearms, and money across the U.S.-Mexico border.
"The DEA put out a statement yesterday saying that there is an agreement with the Mexican government for an operation called Portero," Sheinbaum said. "There is no agreement with the DEA. The DEA puts out this statement, based on what we don't know. We have not reached any agreement, none of the security institutions (have) with the DEA."
Sheinbaum clarified that the only ongoing activity was a workshop in Texas attended by four members of Mexico's police force.
The DEA statement had pointed to that workshop, describing it as an exercise where Mexican investigators trained at one of its intelligence centers alongside U.S. prosecutors, defense and law enforcement officials, and members of the intelligence community.

Emmanuel Haro Update as Police Serve Search Warrants at Family's Home
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The disappearance of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro has sparked an investigation by police into his whereabouts as deputies said in an update that "several search warrants" have been served at the family's home and the car of Emmanuel's father was seized. Newsweek reached out to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (SBCSD) via email Tuesday night for comment. Why It Matters The original report by the child's mother, Rebecca Haro, of the alleged abduction of Emmanuel in a parking lot of a shopping center raised immediate concerns of public safety. What To Know In an update on Monday, deputies said that "Investigators have served several search warrants at the Haro home and utilized K9s to aid in the investigation. Additionally, a large amount of surveillance video has been obtained from areas of interest and are being reviewed." The sheriff's department added that "extensive searches" for the infant have been undertaken in the cities of Yucaipa and Cabazon. Local media outlet KTLA in Los Angeles also reported that the vehicle belonging to Jake Haro, Emmanuel's father, "was previously seized to be processed for evidence," citing the sheriff's department. In an interview with KTLA, Rebecca previously said that the incident occurred outside Big 5 Sporting Goods on the night of August 14, where she went to buy a mouthguard for her older son's football practice. Haro said she brought Emmanuel with her and noticed he needed to be changed. "I was going to get the diaper and somebody said, 'Hola,' and I don't remember anything since," Rebecca, who had a black eye, said in tears, KTLA reports. "I woke up here on the floor," she said, adding that she did not see the child afterward. In a follow up post about the investigation on Saturday, deputies said they interviewed Emmanuel's mother and father and could not rule out foul play. "Investigators interviewed multiple individuals, including Emmanuel's parents Jake and Rebecca Haro. During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview. At this point in the investigation, investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel," the update said in part. Authorities did not issue a statewide AMBER Alert because no vehicle or suspect descriptions met the alert criteria, KTLA reported. Jake's history with law enforcement was also reported by The Orange County Register, noting that he had previously been convicted of felony willful child cruelty in June of 2023. Vincent Hughes, defense attorney representing Jake and Rebecca Haro, commented on the father's past, according to CBS News, saying, "There was a conviction for child cruelty, which Jake is not running from. He's not hiding from his record; it's publicly available information." CBS News also reports that a 2-year-old was removed from the parents' home after the mother's story stirred doubts among authorities. "Not one thing has been cited as an inconsistency," Hughes said, according to CBS News, adding that "law enforcement is being extremely tight-lipped about the situation." Local media outlet FOX11 LA is also reporting that Emmanuel's parents are receiving death threats, according to Hughes. Baby Emmanuel Haro, who remains missing this week. Hughes, according to CBS News: "Find Emmanuel, that's all the family is asking for. Nobody is searching for a 7-month-old child, and that's the biggest issue here." Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg's Chances of Beating JD Vance in 2028: Poll
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new poll shows potential 2028 presidential election matchups between Vice President JD Vance and prominent Democratic leaders as next year's midterm campaigns are on the horizon. Why It Matters Early polls, especially in crucial swing states, have gained significance as potential contenders for the 2028 presidential election begin to emerge. Even with the election still a few years away, polling could offer insight into candidate viability, voter sentiment and evolving party dynamics, particularly after the pivotal 2024 election cycle. What To Know In the poll released Tuesday by SoCal Strategies and sponsored by On Point Politics and Red Eagle Politics, California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom secured 39 percent in a potential matchup with Vance, who landed 37 percent. The survey shows 23 percent were undecided in the matchup. In a race against former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Vance trailed with 37 percent of the vote compared to Buttigieg's 41 percent. The survey shows 21 percent were undecided. The poll surveyed 700 U.S. adults on August 18. "The survey was weighted by age, gender, race, education, and 2024 vote to match the Bonfire National Voter File," the pollster noted. ESPN host Stephen A. Smith also came close to Vance in the survey, receiving 35 percent of the vote compared to Vance's 37 percent. Previous polling has shown Vance as the clear GOP primary front-runner. The field is more crowded for Democrats, as former Vice President Kamala Harris, Newsom and Buttigieg all are early top contenders. Tuesday's poll also shows President Donald Trump's overall approval rating at 45 percent versus a disapproval rating of 48 percent. (Photo by) What People Are Saying Columbia University professor Robert Y. Shapiro, to Newsweek via email on Tuesday: "It is of course much too early to tell anything significant from this other than the 2028 election is likely to be close just like the last presidential elections. See the high percent undecided as well. "The data may suggest that Vance is not as strong a candidate as Donald Trump, but we would need to compare the hypothetical of Trump running for an imaginary third term against Newsom or Buttigieg. Regardless of what might happen in the midterm election, it looks like 2028 will be another nail biter..." Trump, while answering questions during a news conference on the 2028 Olympics, when directly asked if Vance is the successor to MAGA: "Well, I think most likely in all fairness, he's the vice president. I think Marco [Rubio] is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form. I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, so it's too early obviously to talk about it but certainly he's doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point." What Happens Next Pollsters and analysts were expected to release additional national and state-level surveys in the coming months as midterm campaigning ramps up.
