BIRMINGHAM - High-flying Aston Villa dispatched Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Premier League on Friday to improve their chances of more Champions League football and leave their visitors firmly focused on next week's Europa League final.
With Villa dominating possession in a party atmosphere for their final home game of the season, the breakthrough came in the 59th minute when centre-back Ezri Konsa whipped home after Ollie Watkins headed the ball into his path from a corner.
Midfielder Boubacar Kamara rifled home Villa's second in the 73rd minute to end the tepid resistance of Spurs, who hope to salvage an otherwise miserable season in Bilbao next week if they can beat Manchester United to lift the Europa League.
With one fixture left, Villa went fourth in the Premier League with the win - a point above Manchester City in the last Champions League qualifying spot albeit Pep Guardiola's side have two games more to play. Chelsea, in sixth, were also playing on Friday in the later kickoff. REUTERS

Pulisic, who played 50 games for AC Milan in the recently-concluded season, said he would miss the Gold Cup to rest and recover, with former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas among those who criticised the decision. In an interview with the CBS Sports podcast on Thursday, Pulisic said he had asked to play in friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland, but was not involved in those matches because Pochettino wanted a consistent squad heading into the Gold Cup. The AC Milan winger said he understood the head coach's decision, while adding that those questioning his commitment to the national team were "way out of line". Asked about Pulisic's comments, Pochettino told reporters on Saturday: "Players (do) not need to understand or not understand. Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan. "Because if not, OK, we invert — we swap the position (coach and player), no ? That is obvious. The most important thing is that we explain why we decided not to include (him) in the two friendly games. "And then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand... I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin." The U.S. suffered defeats in both of their friendly matches, losing 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 at home against Switzerland. They will look to snap a four-game losing run when they begin their Gold Cup campaign with a match against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose, California later on Sunday. [LOS ANGELES] Freshly crowned kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) arrived this week in the United States for the Club World Cup and are treating Fifa's lucrative new competition not as a nuisance at the end of an exhausting season but as a serious objective. 'I think it is an incredible competition,' PSG coach Luis Enrique said of the Club World Cup in the immediate aftermath of his team's Uefa Champions League triumph in Munich two weeks ago. 'Our aim is to be competitive and try to win a fifth trophy of the season.' The Qatar-backed French giants could be forgiven for wanting some time to bask in the glory of their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich which allowed them to finally win the Champions League for the first time in their history. There had been numerous agonising failures in Europe's elite club competition, as well as billions of euros spent on transfer fees on stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, prior to captain Marquinhos raising the trophy aloft.
