Dixon mayor loses bet with Rockford over high school 2025 Stateline Quiz Bowl tournament finale
"I lost a bet, but I lost a bet for a good reason," he said.
On May 21, Dixon High School's Scholastic Bowl team faced off against Keith Country Day School's team in Rockford in the finale of the 2025 Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl hosted by WTVO and FOX 39. The special televised tournament started with 28 local schools in the region that competed in the academic trivia-style games until the best two teams went head to head in the finale.
During the live broadcast, Hughes challenged Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara to a bet.
Hughes said he thought "it was a nice way to get the kids some recognition, not just on the local level, but a little municipal rivalry as well as the high schools."
The mayor whose school lost would personally donate $100 to the winning school's extracurricular activities. They also would have to wear apparel from the winning school at the city's next council meeting, and the information needed to go out on the city's social media.
It was a close match, but Keith Country Day beat Dixon, and Hughes followed through with the bet's terms.
"Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a Keith Country Day hat or shirt, but Mayor McNamara was very happy to provide me with a city of Rockford hat," Hughes said.
Still, "it was a heck of a deal for both Keith Country Day and Dixon High School to make the finals," Hughes said, adding that it's the first time Dixon has made the finals.
The Dixon team is led by coach Tom Padilla, and the high school students who participated in the match were Nathan Stauter, Ronan Quick, James Cocar, Sebastian Seibel, Brady Rosinski, Jeremiah Frye and Owen Winters.

This detail was revealed in The Athletic's deal sheet on Tuesday, when James Pearce wrote: "Koumas, the 19-year-old who has also attracted some permanent interest, is wanted by Sheffield United, Hull City, Wrexham and Preston North End." As such, the Welsh interest certainly feels plausible and potentially, Koumas could join them on loan. The temporary move would solve the Windass injury absence that appears to be a concern and the Reds could trust that the Welshman would be getting substantial minutes for a team in his homeland. All of the parties would subsequently benefit from the deal and this potential agreement appears to have sufficient legs, although we'll have to see if anything actually develops over the next two weeks. Liverpool have a lot on their plate and it might be decided that Koumas could come into the first team if the recruitment team struggle to get another forward across the line before deadline day arrives. For now, uncertainty will prevail but I'd expect to see some movement on his future in due course.

Oregon Ducks have three of top 100-ranked players in college football for 2025 season
In the same week that a trio of Oregon Ducks were named 2025 AP Preseason All-Americans, those same three players have been named to ESPN's top 100 players in college football prior to the 2025 season. Safety Dillon Thieneman was the first Duck to appear on the list at No. 44. The former Purdue Boilermaker was one of the team's lone standouts, finishing with a team-leading 104 total tackles (70 solo) and six passes defensed. Next was running back Makai Hughes, who also transferred to join Oregon's program this offseason. Coming in at No. 30 on the list, Hughes established himself as one of the top running backs in the country during his two seasons at Tulane — regardless of conference. "Hughes rushed for 2,779 yards combined the past two seasons, more than any other returning back in college football," ESPN's Jake Trotter wrote. "Hughes should bring a level of physicality to the Oregon offense; he broke 38 tackles last season, tied with North Carolina's Omarion Hampton for fifth most in the nation." Tops on the list for the Ducks is defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei, who's ranked as the 20th best player in college football. It should come as no surprise, as he was an All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and notched 10.5 sacks in the regular season. That led the conference. "The Ducks lost several key players off last season's defense, including tackle Derrick Harmon, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Trotter wrote. "But Uiagalelei is a big reason the Ducks could be just as disruptive up front after ranking third in the Big Ten with 40 sacks in 2024." With less than two weeks to go before Oregon kicks off their season against Montana State, the preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Ducks' trio of stars. 'Slow and unimaginative' - Blues fans on Solihull Moors draw
Carlisle United fans gave us their views on X after the 1-1 draw with Solihull Moors - here's a selection of their comments. Team selection baffling, lack of subs to change anything even more baffling. Hughes has got some work to do, playing players in a system and in positions they're familiar with would be a good start. (@RyCUFC) Not a performance to write home about. Poor from the start, midfield looked disjointed and gave the ball away too cheaply. No urgency and no one to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. We need someone that can dictate a game, we haven't seen that player yet. (@cumbrianbluess) Bizarre line up, reluctant to make subs until it's too late. Slow on the ball, lack ideas. Lack strength, lack desire. Nothing new (@riegaan) Frustrating. Gonna be a lot of games like this across the season but we have to move the ball quicker.
