Dixon mayor loses bet with Rockford over high school 2025 Stateline Quiz Bowl tournament finale
"I lost a bet, but I lost a bet for a good reason," he said.
On May 21, Dixon High School's Scholastic Bowl team faced off against Keith Country Day School's team in Rockford in the finale of the 2025 Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl hosted by WTVO and FOX 39. The special televised tournament started with 28 local schools in the region that competed in the academic trivia-style games until the best two teams went head to head in the finale.
During the live broadcast, Hughes challenged Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara to a bet.
Hughes said he thought "it was a nice way to get the kids some recognition, not just on the local level, but a little municipal rivalry as well as the high schools."
The mayor whose school lost would personally donate $100 to the winning school's extracurricular activities. They also would have to wear apparel from the winning school at the city's next council meeting, and the information needed to go out on the city's social media.
It was a close match, but Keith Country Day beat Dixon, and Hughes followed through with the bet's terms.
"Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a Keith Country Day hat or shirt, but Mayor McNamara was very happy to provide me with a city of Rockford hat," Hughes said.
Still, "it was a heck of a deal for both Keith Country Day and Dixon High School to make the finals," Hughes said, adding that it's the first time Dixon has made the finals.
The Dixon team is led by coach Tom Padilla, and the high school students who participated in the match were Nathan Stauter, Ronan Quick, James Cocar, Sebastian Seibel, Brady Rosinski, Jeremiah Frye and Owen Winters.

Wrexham open door to Liverpool wonderkid move
Liverpool are rarely short of offers for loan moves and it can be difficult to make the right choice. Of course, the player has to want to taken on the opportunity to play elsewhere for a season at a more competitive level, but the club has to make way for the player, giving them regular minutes. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! If those conditions aren't met, then the move isn't right and Liverpool will be disrupting the players' development more than enhancing it. Richard Hughes has to make sure everything is all in order. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Right now, a few Liverpool wonderkids are being considered for a move and a well-respected club in the football league is rumoured to be looking at a move for one of them. The stars are aligning. Koumas off to Wales? According to TeamTalk, show-stopping club Wrexham - who have been promoted three seasons in a row - are interested in a move for Lewis Koumas, a young teenage winger in Liverpool's academy. In their report, it said: "It is understood that Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas remains a target, especially with Josh Windass facing an extended absence through injury, but ambitious Wrexham are now looking to stiffen their defence." Of course, the report might have considered the young talent for a permanent move, which might well prove to be difficult to complete. But Liverpool are unwilling to sell Koumas in any case. This detail was revealed in The Athletic's deal sheet on Tuesday, when James Pearce wrote: "Koumas, the 19-year-old who has also attracted some permanent interest, is wanted by Sheffield United, Hull City, Wrexham and Preston North End." As such, the Welsh interest certainly feels plausible and potentially, Koumas could join them on loan. The temporary move would solve the Windass injury absence that appears to be a concern and the Reds could trust that the Welshman would be getting substantial minutes for a team in his homeland. All of the parties would subsequently benefit from the deal and this potential agreement appears to have sufficient legs, although we'll have to see if anything actually develops over the next two weeks. Liverpool have a lot on their plate and it might be decided that Koumas could come into the first team if the recruitment team struggle to get another forward across the line before deadline day arrives. For now, uncertainty will prevail but I'd expect to see some movement on his future in due course.

Oregon Ducks have three of top 100-ranked players in college football for 2025 season
In the same week that a trio of Oregon Ducks were named 2025 AP Preseason All-Americans, those same three players have been named to ESPN's top 100 players in college football prior to the 2025 season. Safety Dillon Thieneman was the first Duck to appear on the list at No. 44. The former Purdue Boilermaker was one of the team's lone standouts, finishing with a team-leading 104 total tackles (70 solo) and six passes defensed. Next was running back Makai Hughes, who also transferred to join Oregon's program this offseason. Coming in at No. 30 on the list, Hughes established himself as one of the top running backs in the country during his two seasons at Tulane — regardless of conference. "Hughes rushed for 2,779 yards combined the past two seasons, more than any other returning back in college football," ESPN's Jake Trotter wrote. "Hughes should bring a level of physicality to the Oregon offense; he broke 38 tackles last season, tied with North Carolina's Omarion Hampton for fifth most in the nation." Tops on the list for the Ducks is defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei, who's ranked as the 20th best player in college football. It should come as no surprise, as he was an All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and notched 10.5 sacks in the regular season. That led the conference. "The Ducks lost several key players off last season's defense, including tackle Derrick Harmon, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Trotter wrote. "But Uiagalelei is a big reason the Ducks could be just as disruptive up front after ranking third in the Big Ten with 40 sacks in 2024." With less than two weeks to go before Oregon kicks off their season against Montana State, the preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Ducks' trio of stars. 'Slow and unimaginative' - Blues fans on Solihull Moors draw
Carlisle United fans gave us their views on X after the 1-1 draw with Solihull Moors - here's a selection of their comments. Team selection baffling, lack of subs to change anything even more baffling. Hughes has got some work to do, playing players in a system and in positions they're familiar with would be a good start. (@RyCUFC) Not a performance to write home about. Poor from the start, midfield looked disjointed and gave the ball away too cheaply. No urgency and no one to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. We need someone that can dictate a game, we haven't seen that player yet. (@cumbrianbluess) Bizarre line up, reluctant to make subs until it's too late. Slow on the ball, lack ideas. Lack strength, lack desire. Nothing new (@riegaan) Frustrating. Gonna be a lot of games like this across the season but we have to move the ball quicker. Set up wasn't right as we lacked width and creativity until we made changes at 0–1. Stuff to learn for the players and Hughes. Positive is, we're still unbeaten. (@parkinsonross) Timid, ponderous, slow and unimaginative. Davies was excellent, Linney tried to spark us into life and Kelly was ok. The rest of them are woeful, 3 CDM for a home game against an unfancied side is shocking. (@Halpinforpope) The negatives.. midfield selection lacked creativity. Grant looked completely out of sorts. The positives.. Davies as an attacking threat. Macadam looking a very useful midfielder. Mugabi a decent league debut. Overall disappointing but it's too early to panic just yet (@Wisey6575) Too many negatives to list but a few positives in amongst it all. Mugabi played well as did Davies. We've stopped losing and it looks like we can play as badly as we like and still pick up points. Let's see if we can improve over the BH weekend. Very early days yet UTB (@Nick_Brown86) Solihull looked up for it more than we did and probably deserved to win the game. We lacked width and creativity in midfield, changes coming too late again. Also, get the lights sacked off from the Warwick (@kai_thompson9) No creativity, we actually done well in stopping them from creating much, but then we spoilt that by setting them up for their goal.. & we barely created anything ourselves.. not sure why more changes weren't made.. thought Embleton & Robson should've been brought on. (@joeleigh95) Wasn't great but he made the changes necessary from Saturday, Armstrong playing on the right done us no favours but time will tell. If you go off fans opinion, we would probably have a new manager every 10 games and 11 signings every window. Can't happen. (@philipscott20) Slow, lethargic. Needed a big tackle from us to get crowd going. No bite. Got annoyed when Hughes was trying to get the crowd going. I'm afraid Murray looked like rabbit in headlights. Need to get a grip. PS I'm not normally negative but it was dire. (@Paddockgirlie) Too slow, no urgency, and outplayed again at home by a team who we should be putting to the sword. Credit to Solihull, better team by far tonight. That midfield is a mess, and defence isn't much better…more recruits needed desperately (@Alex_Jordan85) Left-back Sam Murray in action on his home debut (Image: Ben Holmes) A team of Linneys and we would be alright. But that's not the case. Thank god the transfer window is still open; clear as day we need that creator in midfield because all our best firepower was on the pitch getting next to no service. Murray squandered his claim not attacking (@CameronEllis_) Lack of creativity in midfield. Disjointed at best. Poor at worst. Their fans out sang the home crowd and could feel the tension in the ground which translates to the pitch. Must improve if we want promotion (@FreddyWhit40948) Five points from three games is play-off form, even after two poor performances at home. It's probably best that any fanciful ideas about automatic promotion have been put out of fans' heads quickly. We need to knuckle down to support the team through a long hard season. (@MikeEwins) Ridiculous team selection. Two holding midfielders and a defender in midfield. Is it any surprise there was no creativity? How is Thomas team captain when he's an accident waiting to happen? Recruitment, other than Linney and, hopefully, Feeney looks to have been poor again. (@MikeTurney7) Teams are gonna come here like "it's their cup final" it's been hope we're not gonna get a bloody nose every time we're at home because something is lacking in large parts of these last two games. Luckily the ante was upped again tonight to save face but it's poor (@LindaNi121202) Made no sense dropping Whelan (our best player since Christmas) and Embleton (our only creative midfielder) (@peterbell83) Only positive is that we are unbeaten- but pretty worrying that Hughes doesn't appear to know his best 11 . We're 3 games in and he still appears to be in pre-season mode making wholesale changes! (@McCarlisle1) Unless there is a dramatic improvement we can wave goodbye to automatic promotion and we will be lucky to make the play offs. Sparky needs to get a grip, wholesale changes did not need to be made from our last game. Bank Holiday games will be interesting. (@peterjo91525330) 3 defensive mids at home made no sense, nobody wanted it off the defence so we were punting. A left back who seemed scared to do anything other than turn back, same as Harper but then we don't switch it fast enough. With 3 upfront, their shape kept Linney on the outside (@paulmason2000) Hughes needs to find his best team sharpish or he's gonna be out the door. Nowhere near a side that wants to compete at the top of table, really worrying. (@lewisrids3) Changes from Saturday were necessary but the shape they had to set up to fit them totally nullified Linney. It was ponderous, lacked drive & running. That pass from Grant was sloppy & born out of the negativity the midfield showed most of the game. Well behind the points tally. (@Andythehood) Negative eleven, 3 of whom cant possibly have been match fit, puzzling one really especially being at home. (@cufccraig1983) Massive question marks on Hughes now. Team selection was awful. Refused to make sub to try and change the game. I've got awful feeling we be looking for a new manager after 10 games again. (@MartynWaller1) Tactically weak, hoofing it to Linney and hoping he does something with it appeared to be the plan after 60 minutes. Hughes needs to own that one, should have made some substantial changes. 2 games in a row we've been miles off a promotion chasing side. (@DeckchairBlues) I'm a die hard fan and season ticket holder who is already thinking of other things to busy myself with on match days. Think that says it all. Had enough.
