FM Sitharaman highlights India's reforms, investment opportunities in FFD4 Summit in Spain

Time of India5 days ago
Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs
Nirmala Sitharaman
, currently on an official visit to Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, delivered a strong pitch for mobilising private capital for sustainable development at the International Business Forum Leadership Summit titled "From FFD4 Outcome to Implementation: Unlocking the Potential of Private Capital for Sustainable Development" in Seville, Spain.
Addressing global leaders and investors, Sitharaman highlighted that while private investment has shown encouraging growth in recent years, thanks to a rise in innovative financial instruments and traditional sources, much more needs to be done.
In a social media post, the minister said, "Private capital mobilisation remains significantly below what is required, with low and middle-income countries receiving a disproportionately small share. This underscores the urgent need for targeted efforts to overcome investment barriers and better align financial flows with development priorities."
Highlighting India's own journey, Sitharaman stressed the importance of addressing perceived investment risks in emerging
markets
.
India, she noted, has taken significant steps to overcome these challenges. Sitharaman stated, "India has addressed this challenge by establishing independent regulators, implementing transparent bidding processes, standardising contracts, and improving the
ease of doing business
. These reforms have significantly enhanced investor confidence and reduced transaction costs."

The Finance Minister also highlighted the role of strong domestic financial systems. India has focused on strengthening its banking sector and deepening capital markets to support large-scale financing in infrastructure and industry.
She said India's regulatory frameworks now better balance investor protection with innovation and flexibility, creating an enabling environment for long-term investment.
FM added, "Our regulatory frameworks have evolved with market needs - balancing investor protection with innovation and flexibility - creating a more conducive environment for long-term investment."
One of the standout examples presented by Sitharaman was India's transformation in the renewable energy sector. From just 2.8 GW of solar energy installed in 2014, India has expanded its capacity to over 110 GW.
This success, she said, "was enabled by clear national targets, streamlined procurement, and government-backed risk mitigation. This model attracted institutional investors, including pension and sovereign wealth funds."
On the sidelines of the FFD4 Summit, Sitharaman also held bilateral meetings with various global leaders.
She met Shane Reti, New Zealand's Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Universities, Statistics, and Pacific Peoples. Both ministers discussed cooperation in defence, education, technology, and agriculture. The two leaders reaffirmed the shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties between India and New Zealand.
Sitharaman also spoke about India's growing International Financial Services Centre at GIFT City and highlighted investment opportunities in banking, bullion exchange, capital markets, the FinTech ecosystem, insurance, and reinsurance.
She also noted the importance of educational ties, with many Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand.
The Finance Minister also held talks with Reem Alabali-Radovan, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Sitharaman congratulated her on her new role and discussed cooperation under the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership.
The discussions included collaboration in areas such as green energy, urban mobility, sustainable urban development, and ecological livelihoods. Minister Alabali-Radovan expressed interest in deepening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation with India.
Sitharaman is leading an Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs during this official trip from June 30 to July 5.
Her itinerary includes a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, where she will hold a bilateral meeting with the Portuguese Finance Minister and interact with the Indian diaspora and investors. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she will address the 10th Annual Meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB) as India's Governor and also participate in the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting.
She is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with her counterparts from Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Russia. (ANI)

TN tribal women become taxpayers after generating Rs 1.98 crore through SHG

Union minister of tribal affairs Jual Oram with the tribal women COIMBATORE: A group of tribal women in Thanikandi village in Coimbatore district have become taxpayers after generating an overall turnover of Rs 1.98 crore in the last seven years. Their journey began with an initial working capital of Rs 2,200, forming a self-help group (SHG) that has gained attention and appreciation of Union minister of tribal affairs Jual Oram. In 2018, a group of eleven women in Thanikandi village near Booluvampatti registered an SHG to start a small business in the locality. Each of them invested Rs 200 to start a petty tea stall and a tiffin stall. The shops were established with the support of the Isha Foundation, where they were provided fundamental education on business tactics, savings, banking, profit and loss and other business nuances. It is noteworthy that despite their lack of education, they have shown progress in expanding their business. All these tribal women, who were least connected to urban growth, previously did seasonal jobs like honey harvesting and agriculture for livelihood. According to Isha's tribal welfare team coordinator Chidakasha, the women have helped form nearly eight more SHGs in neighbouring villages and extended support to establish similar businesses like selling bakery items. "Initially, with a collective investment of Rs 2,200, they bought groceries and managed the rest with whatever was available at home, including a kerosene stove. They struggled to pay the initial investment. However, over the years, the situation has drastically changed, and they are now willing to apply for loans and expand their business,' Chidakasha said. He said the annual turnover was Rs 25 lakh in 2018. It reached up to Rs 49 lakh in the financial year 2024-25, making them fall under the eligible taxpayers. 'Though the tax amount is a meagre Rs 400, it is a great leap towards their empowerment. In the current financial year, if their turnover increases further, they will also get registered for the Goods and Services Tax (GST)," he said. Gayathri P, a member of the SHG who runs a bakery, said, "This helped us improve the standards. The important thing is that we were the first from the village to fly to Chennai four years ago and later took a couple of other villagers along with us to Bengaluru two years ago. All the expenditure was through the profit gained and savings from the business. We run nearly nine tribal shops from our SHG. We have plans for expansion to set up our production unit. "

Kumaraswamy challenges Congressto secure Tamil Nadu nod for Mekedatu

Mysuru: Union minister HD Kumaraswamy Saturday challenged the Congress govt in Karnataka to get its ally in Tamil Nadu to approve the Mekedatu project, claiming he could obtain the Prime Minister's approval in just five minutes if it succeeded. "I stand by what I said earlier. Congress neither has the strength to convince the Tamil Nadu govt nor to confront it. Without that, the Mekedatu project cannot be implemented. If they can convince their ally, I will get the PM's approval in five minutes," he told reporters. Kumaraswamy said, "It was the Congress that had earlier claimed it would implement the Mekedatu project. They have been silent for two years and are now shifting the responsibility onto me. How can I proceed? Let them first get their ally's consent. If the Tamil Nadu govt is boldly challenged and Mekedatu is taken up, then only it would be possible." You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Criticising Congress for what he described as token gestures, he remarked, "What's the point of opening an office for Mekedatu without even convincing Tamil Nadu? Congress functionaries claimed they would implement the project. They should fulfill what they promised. They came to power after holding a padayatra in the name of Mekedatu. In the past two-and-a-half years, they have merely wasted time. If they now try to blame me, how is it justified?" The Mekedatu project is a proposed reservoir and drinking water project across the Cauvery river in Bengaluru South district. While Karnataka argues it is crucial to meet Bengaluru's drinking water needs and includes a hydropower component, Tamil Nadu opposes the project, fearing it would reduce the downstream flow in violation of Supreme Court orders and interstate water-sharing agreements. Taking a swipe at state minister Priyank Kharge's recent remark about banning RSS, Kumaraswamy said, "Forget banning RSS, Congress is getting banned everywhere. The people themselves are rejecting Congress. Let them first try to preserve their own existence. Don't give statements to divert attention from real issues." Alleging that Congress functionaries were targeting him due to political anxiety, he said, "They are afraid of me. That's why Congress leaders constantly chant my name. Ever since BJP and JD(S) formed an alliance, Congress has lost sleep. So they keep targeting me."
