Ekurhuleni crackdown sees mass arrests and crime prevention efforts
The operation brought together multiple stakeholders who followed up on leads, traced suspects, and worked to curb crime in the area.
According to Ekurhuleni District communication officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the operation aimed to protect residents and ensure that offenders were brought to justice. It began on August 13 and concluded on August 14.

On the first day, detectives traced suspects throughout the district, resulting in 301 arrests.
These included 192 arrests for contact crimes, 18 for contact-related crimes, nine for property crimes, 54 for other serious crimes, and 37 for gender-based violence.
In a separate effort, members of Crime Intelligence arrested a suspect for dealing in drugs.
The following morning, Katlehong Police Station's station commander, Brigadier Albertina Vesi, led joint operations in Edenvale alongside other senior officers.
The initiative included SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, security companies, and other local stakeholders.
During the Edenvale operation, 43 illegal immigrants were detained, two suspects were arrested for drug possession, one was arrested for dealing in dagga, and another for possession of illicit cigarettes.
A shebeen was closed for non-compliance, and two second-hand goods stores were fined for failing to comply with regulations.

The operation also had a preventative focus. Members of social crime prevention distributed educational pamphlets at Greenstone Shopping Centre, providing information about gender-based violence and urging community members to report abuse.
Senior officers and law enforcement officials conducted a walkabout at the centre to promote police visibility and engage with management.
Vesi thanked all members and partners for their ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the district.

Nongoma man arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, assault rifle
Zululand District police arrested a 42-year-old suspect in KwaNongoma for being in possession of four unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The arrest was carried out in the early hours of Sunday morning, when police officers from the Zululand District Task Team and the Crime Intelligence acted on a tip-off that a resident of the Gwabe area in KwaNongoma was in possession of unlicensed firearms. KZN SAPS said, once the information was verified an operation was executed and the police pounced on the suspect at his home. 'The suspect was found inside the house and when the members conducted a search, they found a .303 rifle with a scope attached, an AK47 assault rifle, an Uzzi, as well as a 9mm pistol. 'The firearms were found under the mattress of the bed he was sleeping on. The suspect could not produce a licence for any of the firearms found in his house,' said the provincial police. Atteridgeville crime sweep nets hundreds of suspects for various crimes A high-impact crime-combatting initiative, involving multiple law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of 319 suspects for various crimes in Atteridgeville this past weekend. The operation formed part of the district's ongoing initiative to combat crime with a focus on enhancing visibility, restoring order, and improving community safety. According to police spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, the operation follows a structured approach that includes roadblocks, stop-and-searches, compliance inspections, and tracing of wanted suspects. 'Its main objective is to make communities safer through co-ordinated, visible policing and partnerships with stakeholders,' Van Dyk said. Spearheaded by the Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Brigadier Moses Dladla, the operation was supported by members of SAPS and comprised different stakeholders. Home Affairs, TMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, and Community Safety departments assisted. Van Dyk said the detectives were responsible for the arrest of over 200 suspects for different criminal offences. 'Several suspects were arrested for a variety of criminal offences, which include 251 arrests by detectives, 66 for gender-based violence-related offences, two for murder, five for attempted murder, three for armed robbery and five for rape.' He said about 31 undocumented foreign nationals were detained, and they are now being processed by immigration authorities. Van Dyk emphasised that the multidisciplinary operation saw thousands of people, and hundreds of vehicles searched. '[A total of] 1 210 people and 890 vehicles were searched, which led to the arrest of 18 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 86 traffic infringement notices issued, amounting to R47 050,' he said. He stated that the weekend operation specifically targeted crime hotspot areas. 'The police patrolled and searched 33 crime hotspots, leading to the arrests of 10 suspects for public drinking, with one suspect arrested for drug possession when four bags containing various drugs and a ball of crystal meth were found in his possession,' said Van Dyk. Police inspected 33 liquor outlets, leading to the closure of six for non-compliance, and liquor and a gambling machine were confiscated and seized, with two arrests made for illegal gambling. Dladla commended the teamwork of all participating departments and highlighted the importance of community support.
