I tried on a bunch of dresses from Gap, RW&CO, Banana Republic & more — these are the best ones, starting under $50
Anyone who knows me knows I love dresses. As a shopping writer who has made a profession out of trying on clothes, I've become quite adept at spotting frocks that flatter my 48-year-old body.
However, it had been a while since I last visited the likes of mall brands like Banana Republic, Dynamite and RW&CO, and I wondered if I would still find their frocks flattering. To my surprise, I actually found a ton of dresses that were both flattering and affordable. Intrigued? Check out nine of the best dresses for 40+ women below.
Banana Republic Mixed-Media Cut-Out Midi Dress
$126 $260 at Banana Republic
As a mom of two young kids, I don't often wear white dresses, but this Banana Republic midi dress immediately caught my eye. The stretch jersey twist top fits perfectly, and the centre cutout adds just the right amount of exposure. Plus, the 100 per cent cotton poplin skirt is made even better with its side seam pockets. One reviewer described this dress as "elegant and sophisticated," and I couldn't agree more. While it's usually $260, you can snag it at more than 50 per cent off right now — but sizes are going fast, so hurry!
Dynamite Flared Oxford Mini Shirt Dress
$70 at Dynamite
The dress selection at Dynamite was dynamite! This collared one is especially flattering. Thanks to its gathering and shirring at the waist, my mom pooch is nowhere to be seen. I also really like the oversized sleeves of this comfortable cotton mini. It's sexy, fun and I can easily dress it up or down.
Talbots Modern Poplin Midi Dress - Stunning Floral
$170 at Talbots
I hadn't shopped at Talbots since I was a kid, when I reluctantly went with my mom. However, I've heard great things about their revitalized look, so I decided to stop in — and I was blown away! This cotton dress, with its dropped waist, capped sleeves and seam pockets, is so pretty. I loved the floral pattern and appreciated the hidden back zip closure for a more secure fit.
Gap Lace-Trim Maxi Slip Dress
$47 $118 at Gap
When it's hot and humid, nothing beats a slip dress. This rayon-nylon blend from Gap features adjustable straps and a lace trim that makes this middle-aged mama feel sexy. The side slit enhances the dress's appeal, making it perfect for lounging around the house or for an evening walk on the beach. Plus, the wrinkle-free fabric is ideal for travel.
H&M Oversized Tie-Belt Dress
$45 at H&M
H&M is one of my favourite stores to shop at, particularly when I'm looking for something stylish on a budget. This oversized floral dress perfectly embodies everything I love about dresses; it's cute, flowy and flattering. The front buttons and removable tie belt further enhance the playful style, and the balloon sleeves also add a fun touch.
RW&CO Sleeveless Halter-Neck Maxi Dress
$140 at RW&CO
I spotted this dress as soon as I entered RW&CO and knew I had to try it on. The halter neck ties in the back, and the flowy fabric feels amazing. You could pair it with a brown belt for structure, but I actually love the flare silhouette.
Banana Republic Cotton Poplin Wrap Maxi Dress
$260 at Banana Republic
Banana Republic does it again! With a flattering V-neck front and concealed button closure, this ankle-length dress suits a variety of bust sizes. I love the deep side pockets, and the leather trim around the straps adds a nice touch. The only downside? It's quite pricey, ringing in at over $250.
RW&CO Extended-Sleeve Denim Midi Dress
$130 at RW&CO
I'm obsessed with the heavier fabric of this cute denim number from RW&CO. The midi length combined with button-front and a tie-waist combines for a really flattering silhouette, and I'm loving the '90s Shania Twain vibes this frock is giving off. Pair it over a long-sleeve tee and with cute ankle boots in the fall, and you're off to the races.
Levi's Ravina Midi Dress
$100 at Levi's
Levi's isn't the first place I think of when shopping for dresses, but I popped in on a whim and found this cute A-line one number. The smocking at the back made for a very comfortable fit, and the 100 per cent cotton fabric is sure to feel great on even the most humid of days. Also, the bra-friendly straps make it ideal for anyone who wants to wear some support underneath.

Anne Hathaway's 'Devil Wears Prada 2' Wardrobe Includes Chanel Sandals and Valentino's Unreleased Panthea Bag
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The devil may wear Prada, but Andy Sachs wears Valentino. The movie's sequel is currently underway and new looks are emerging with each day of filming. Thus far, Anne Hathaway has sported anti-fashion 'fits with runway elements—seemingly, as a callout to her former stomping grounds. Yesterday, she appeared on setwearing a tank top and jeans, styled with a black vest and Chanel sandals. Later that day, the on-screen journalist churned out yet another stylish 'fit worthy of her former career path. On July 21, the Oscar winner embodied her character's aura, wearing a denim boiler suit on the streets of New York City. The '70s-inspired onesie came courtesy of Re/Done's 2022 collaboration with Ford Motor Company, featuring a smattering of automotive patches atop the mechanic's staple. All in all, Hathaway's Devil Wears Prada 2 look channeled pre-makeover Andy—save for a few notable designer accessories. She re-wore the vintage Chanel dad sandals from earlier that day and also debuted Valentino Garavani's new Panthea Bag, a slouchy leather tote which debuted in Alessandro Michele's Fall/Winter 2025 collection. Complete with V-shaped stitching, a simple rectangular silhouette, and double handle options (gold chainlink and studded leather), the bag felt authentic to Andy's subdued style. To no surprise, Hathaway got her hands on the Panthea months before it's set to hit shelves. Similar to Katie Holmes's unreleased Chloé Paddington Bag, which she wore on the set of her own upcoming film, Hathaway's tote is only accessible to A-listers until this fall. Then, it will officially become shoppable to the masses—likely, at a mid-four-figure price point. Thankfully, the wait is almost over: Fall 2025 collections will launch in a matter of weeks. So, keep an eye on your nearest Valentino storefront for Hathaway's Panthea purse. If you simply cannot wait (relatable), these similar styles should tide you over. Ten of the best pieces to shop from the new Topshop collection
Topshop is so back, baby. The cult high street brand has returned with a brand new collection, which balances old Topshop favourites (yes, Joni and Jamie both make an appearance) with fresh garments for 2025. A potential Topshop revival has been rumoured since September 2024, when ASOS sold a 75 per cent stake in the company to Danish fashion business Heartland for £135 million. The comeback was confirmed in May of this year as Topshop teased its return on Instagram. But this weekend, the dream becomes reality. Topshop has finally returned to the hallowed halls of reclaiming its place as a standalone brand. The new collection features a 40-piece edit by It Girl and Topshop muse, Cara Delevingne, which is live now. The edit includes a delicate silk dress in avocado with pink lace, a structured, striped jumper that looks set to become an A/W staple on the streets of London, and, of course, Joni jeans. Elsewhere, Topshop's wider offering (totalling 177 items) features shaggy faux fur shoulder bags, cinch-waist shirts and oversized knits galore. Before it sells out (and we predict it will), here are some of the best pieces to shop now. Lace Insert Midi Dress, £69, Foldover Longline Bandeau, £34, Wide Stripe Pull On Trouser, £45, Halter Layer Chiffon Dress, £65, Twill Clean Skort, £36, Reversible Fur Collar Bomber, £90, Contrast Stitch Mini Dress, £45, Knitted Relaxed Cardigan, £40, Halterneck Maxi Dress, £62, Striped Straight Leg Trouser, £46,

It Isn't Too Late to Have a Bandanna Boy Summer
Lately it's felt as if there are no more turn-of-the-century trends left for fashion to recycle. Skinny-soled sneakers? Done those. Baggy denim jorts? No longer unholy. Nerdy rimless glasses? Very much back. And then, during an episode of 'Love Island USA' last month, two of the reality dating show's male cast members walked into the communal kitchen wearing identical bandannas folded in half, triangle style, and tied back over their heads—a look not often seen since Tupac, David Foster Wallace and innumerable biker gangs pioneered it some 30 years ago.
