Recently, Kamal Haasan also wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), claiming his comment has been 'misinterpreted'.
Telugu actor Rana Daggubati has reacted to the controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan's 'Kannada born out of Tamil' comment. In a recent interview, the Rana Naidu 2 actor was asked about the backlash that Haasan has been facing ahead of the release of his movie, Thug Life.
Reacting to the same, Rana Daggubati told India Today, 'Social media has become a place to make an opinion. Earlier, you didn't have that. Anything gets touchy and political quite quickly."
When asked how can an actor move past such issues, Rana Daggubati added, 'If the media and the news, and people become smarter (and understand) that actors are not the ones to advocate for the way society lives – it will be a better place. I think you should look at scholars, politicians and learned men and women to lead a way into society."
'You'll never bring a poet to the same stage. Neither do people speaking those languages. If there's a poet in Marathi who's written some fabulous poems, we wouldn't bring them and honour them like we do with film stars. If the lens turns towards more important and current things, the country would become a much better place," he concluded.
What Is The Controversy Regarding Kamal Haasan's Comment?
Kamal Haasan landed in a big controversy recently when he attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai, where he made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. 'Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. That's why when I started my speech, I said 'my life and my family is Tamil'. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," he said.
The actor's remarks quickly went viral and triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. The film has also been facing ban calls in Karnataka. A complaint was been filed against the actor.
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) recently, claiming that his comment has been 'misinterpreted'. 'It pains me that my statement at the Thug Life audio launch, spoken out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr. Rajkumar's family, especially Shiva Rajkumar has been misunderstood and taken out of context. My words were intended only to convey that we are all one and from the same family and not to diminish Kannada in any way. There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of Kannada language," a part of his letter read.
