Former Mamelodi Sundowns owner Angelo Tsichlas killed in car accident

Former Mamelodi Sundowns chairperson Angelo Tsichlas has died in a car accident on Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Pretoria, sending shockwaves through the South African football community.
A family member confirmed the tragic news, although further details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Tsichlas, husband of Natasha Tsichlas – former Sundowns managing director and current vice-president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) – was a key figure in South African football for decades.
Together, the couple were at the helm of Mamelodi Sundowns from the late 1980s through 2003, when Patrice Motsepe acquired the club. A pillar in Mamelodi Sundowns' golden history
From 1990 to 2003, Angelo and Natasha Tsichlas co-owned Mamelodi Sundowns alongside Abe and Solly Krok, helping steer the club through one of its most formative periods.
Even after the club changed ownership, Angelo remained involved, including a stint in 2015 as chief technical adviser.
Angelo Tsichlas is widely credited with helping professionalise club operations and lay the groundwork for the success Mamelodi Sundowns enjoys today.
Current Confederation of African Football (CAF) president and Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe expressed his grief in a heartfelt statement:
'I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Angelo Tsichlas, who was an outstanding football administrator and a close friend… Angelo, Natasha, and the Tsichlas family will always have a special place in my heart and in the hearts of the Motsepe family and the Mamelodi Sundowns family.'
Motsepe lauded Angelo's role – along with the Kroks and former owner Zola Mahobe – in shaping the trajectory of Sundowns:
'We are immensely grateful to them for laying the foundations for the current success of Sundowns. Angelo Tsichlas will forever live in our hearts and minds.'
Mamelodi Sundowns released a separate statement echoing Motsepe's sentiments: 'The chair [Tlhopie Motsepe] and the Motsepe Family, the board of directors, technical team, players, management, staff, supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC and the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences.'
The club extended prayers for comfort and strength to the Tsichlas family, friends, and associates during this difficult time. Post your condolences below, by …

Drake 'curse': Did US rapper bet on Dricus?

US rapper Drake has been roped into the UFC World Champion title loss of Dricus du Plessis to Khamzat Chimaev. According to many social media users, the artist's 'curse' is to blame for the South African's defeat. On Saturday, 16 August, the Russian-born wrestler dominated the fight against his opponent in the Octagon. According to a Grok post, Drake reportedly bet $2 million (R35 million) on Dricus du Plessis to win by submission against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319. However, the AI chatbot's claim is unverified and is void of credible sources. Drake has made no mention of placing a bet on the UFC fight. It wouldn't be the first time Drake was linked to a UFC fight featuring Dricus du Plessis. According to MailOnline, Drake lost $700 000 (R13 million) after betting on Dricus to lose his fight against Sean Strickland last year. The fight – which took place in Drake's home country of Canada in January 2024 – was attended by the Grammy-award-winning star himself. Just hours earlier, Drake shared a look at this betting slip – which had a $700 000 wager on Strickland winning. He captioned the post: ''And, we're going to fight night,' while tagging UFC president Dana White. Dricus beat Strickland via a split vote, winning the UFC Middleweight World Champion belt. Fast forward to August 2024, Drake bet $450 000 (R7,9 million) on Nigerian MMA fighter Israel 'Izzy' Adesanya, who contended the title. Again, Dricus won the fight, this time via submission. The cheeky South African tweeted: 'From the bottom of my heart once again. THANK YOU Drake'. In 2023, Drake lost a substantial amount of cash after he wagered money on Israel Adesanya to beat Sean Strickland, who was the reigning champion at the time. Drake then lost another big payday after backing Adesanya to beat Brazilian Alex Pereira in October. A few months later, Drake lost another bet when his favourite Leon Edwards lost to Colby Covington at UFC 296 in December. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. 'There was Nkota, now there's Sebelebele' – Ex-Pirates striker

Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe has explained what makes new signing Kamogelo Sebelebele a good player. The 23-year-old scored his debut goal for the Buccaneers against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final match at Orlando Stadium. The speedy player scored a late equaliser to earn his side a 1-1 draw in the first leg on Saturday. Manenzhe feels Sebelebele will be a perfect replacement for Mohau Nkota. 'He is a technically gifted player, you know. But what does he bring? He brings aggression, speed, and also the hunger to ask for the ball from behind,' Manenzhe told SuperSport TV . 'So, that is exactly how Orlando Pirates scored the goal [against Sundowns], with Sebelebele asking for the ball from behind. 'He is an out-and-out right winger. In the previous season, they had Mohau Nkota, who is left-footed, playing on the right, but this time they have an out-and-out right-footer on the right-hand side. When he receives the ball, there is no need to turn back to his stronger foot. 'He faced Ronwen Williams and became resourceful, putting the ball in the back of the net,' Manenzhe said. Sebelebele's performance has made him a fan favourite at Orlando Pirates. His energy, runs and aggression have been praised following his solid showing. Will Sebelebele maintain his form? UPDATED Top 10 most-capped Test players list after Eben Etzebeth joins exclusive club

Saturday's opening Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg marked a significant occasion for veteran lock Eben Etzebeth who extended his record as the most capped Springbok of all time to 134 matches. That feat also saw him break out of a tie with former Ireland scrumhalf Conor Murray in joint-11th place in the global pecking order to joint 10th position alongside Welsh prop Gethin Jenkins. Only two players ahead of Etzebeth in the list – James Slipper and Beauden Barrett – are still playing. Etzebeth should get the chance to claim 10th place on his own when the Springboks take on Australia for a second time this coming weekend in Cape Town. At still only 33 years of age, there is plenty of time for Etzebeth to further climb the list before he hangs up his studs.
