Fred Kerley to contest provisional suspension for whereabouts failures

Yahooa day ago
Two-time Olympic 100m medalist Fred Kerley plans to contest a provisional suspension for whereabouts failures, or missing drug tests.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which handles anti-doping for track and field, announced Tuesday that it provisionally suspended Kerley.
Athletes can be provisionally suspended before a hearing to determine the final decision in their case.
A suspension for whereabouts failures, a term that includes missed drug tests, typically ranges from one to two years depending on degree of fault. Suspensions can be backdated to the date of the last missed test.
Olympic-level athletes are required to provide and be present at daily locations for drug testers to find them for no-notice testing.
A press release from lawyer Howard Jacobs' office was posted on Kerley's social media less than a half-hour after the provisional ban was announced.
"Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one of (sic) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location," it read. "Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and he looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel."
Kerley missed the Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships earlier this month, saying at the time that '2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track."
Missing nationals meant that Kerley could not attempt to qualify for September's World Championships.
Kerley, 30, won Olympic 100m silver in Tokyo and bronze in Paris. In between, he won the world 100m title in 2022, running 9.77 and 9.76 seconds in the semifinals and final.
It took three years until another sprinter ran faster -- Jamaican Kishane Thompson's 9.75 in June, the world's best time in a decade.

Mets bringing up pitcher Nolan McLean, who will make his debut Saturday vs. the Mariners, amid latest skid

The New York Mets are bringing up some help for their rotation for the final stretch of the season. The Mets called up right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean on Wednesday. He'll make his Major League Baseball debut officially on Saturday when the Mets host the Seattle Mariners. McLean, who is the No. 3 prospect in the Mets' farm system according to ESPN, has split time with both the franchise's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates so far this season. He holds a 2.45 ERA in 21 games and 18 starts with an 8-5 record. He's struck out 127 batters in just shy of 114 innings, too. The Mets selected him in the third round of the 2023 draft out of Oklahoma State. "We feel good with him going out there and giving us a chance to win baseball games at the big league level," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, via ESPN. "Credit to him that he put himself in this position." The Mets also sent pitcher Justin Hagenman down to their Triple-A affiliate on Wednesday, and replaced him with Paul Blackburn after his rehab assignment. McLean is joining the Mets during a rough stretch. They entered Wednesday's matchup with the Atlanta Braves having lost 11 of their last 13 games, which included being swept by the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians and Milwaukee Brewers. They snapped a seven-game skid with a 13-5 win over the Braves to kick off that three-game series on Tuesday. The Mets' rotation holds a 3.71 ERA as a group, which is seventh in the league, though only one pitcher — David Peterson — has pitched at least six innings in the last month. McLean has hit that mark nine times this year in the minors. The Mets hold a 64-55 record entering Wednesday's contest, which has them five games back from the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East race. Though they still have a ways to go, McLean's presence in their rotation could help provide a significant boost to their hopes for a meaningful postseason run.

A Breeze Airways flight headed to Los Angeles diverted to an airport in Colorado after an unruly passenger waving a skateboard got into an altercation with flight attendants and other passengers and twice broke free of his restraints, according to the airline and local authorities. Breeze Airways Flight 704, which took off from Norfolk, Virginia, at 9:17 a.m. Wednesday, landed in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Grand Junction Police Department said in a statement it responded to the airport there about 11:15 a.m. local time after receiving a report that an "intoxicated male passenger became agitated, yelling racist slurs at airline staff while waving a skateboard.
