Free Penang ferry rides this Wesak Day, says port commission
GEORGE TOWN, May 10 — The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) have announced free ferry services for all Malaysians in conjunction with the Wesak Day celebration on May 12.
SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the free fares involve both directions from Sultan Abdul Halim Pier (PSAH) on the mainland (Butterworth) to Raja Tun Uda Pier (PRTU) on the island and vice-versa.
He said the free fare covers both directions between the two terminals.
'The first trip from PSAH starts at 6.30 am and the last trip is at 11 pm to the island, while from Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda, the first trip begins at 7 am and the last trip is at 11.30 pm to the mainland.
'The public is advised to plan their journey in advance and refer to the latest ferry schedule through the official websites and social media pages of SPPP and PPSB,' he said in a statement tonight.
Yeoh explained that the free ferry service is not only aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Penang but also at encouraging more sustainable and efficient public transportation.
Meanwhile, Yeoh shared statistics from last year's Wesak Day ferry service, which recorded more than 4,391 foot passengers and 1,584 two-wheeled vehicles using the service.
He added that this contributed to the total number of foot passengers in 2024, which reached 2.13 million, along with 747,785 two-wheeled vehicle passengers. — Bernama

She said traffic flow was also congested from Sungkai to Trolak, Bukit Beruntung to Sungai Buaya, and the Rawang rest and recreation (R&R) area towards Rawang. 'Traffic flow from the south on the PLUS highway is congested from Pagoh to Simpang Empat, Pedas Linggi to Seremban, the Seremban R&R area to Nilai, and the Sungai Besi toll plaza to the capital,' she said. For traffic flow from the east to the Klang Valley on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway, congestion was reported at the Karak toll plaza towards Lentang, Bukit Tinggi to the Genting Sempah Tunnel, and the Gombak R&R towards the Gombak toll plaza. In Kelantan, traffic flow increased from Kuala Krai towards Gua Musang this afternoon but was still under control. Gua Musang police chief Sik Choon Foo expects the congestion to continue until late evening.

(LLK pic) PETALING JAYA : Traffic remains heavy on several major highways tonight as more vehicles head out of the capital ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration tomorrow. PLUS Malaysia said traffic at 10.30pm tonight was reported to be slow-moving on both the E2 (North-South Expressway) and the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway. 'On the E2 northbound, congestion was reported in Johor from the Skudai toll plaza to Sedenak, and from Yong Peng to Pagoh. Southbound traffic was slow in Negeri Sembilan from Southville City to the Seremban rest area, and from Bandar Ainsdale to Senawang. 'On the northbound E1, delays are expected from Bukit Lanjan to Rawang (Selangor), Sungkai to Bidor, Bidor to Tapah, Tapah to Gopeng (Perak) and Perai to Bertam (Penang),' the spokesperson told Bernama. The Malaysian highway authority reported that the Kuala Lumpur – Karak expressway was congested eastbound from Gombak to Bukit Tinggi and from Lentang to Bentong. In Kelantan, traffic at Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis and Terengganu-Kelantan via Pasir Puteh was reported to be smooth as of 9.30pm, following minor congestion earlier in the evening.
