Heavy traffic hits highways as Klang Valley sees post-Aidiladha return
A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) said traffic flow from the north towards the Klang Valley on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) was congested at Permatang Pauh towards Juru, Jawi to Bandar Baharu, Kuala Kangsar to the Menora Tunnel and Gopeng to Tapah.
She said traffic flow was also congested from Sungkai to Trolak, Bukit Beruntung to Sungai Buaya and the Rawang Rest and Treatment Area towards Rawang.
'Traffic flow from the south on the PLUS highway is congested from Pagoh to Simpang Empat, Pedas Linggi to Seremban, the Seremban Rest and Treatment Area to Nilai and the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to the capital,' she said when contacted here today.
For traffic flow from the east to the Klang Valley on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK), congestion occurred at the Karak Toll Plaza towards Lentang, Bukit Tinggi to the Genting Sempah Tunnel and the Gombak Rest Area towards the Gombak Toll Plaza.
Meanwhile in Kelantan, traffic flow increased from Kuala Krai towards Gua Musang as of this afternoon, however it is still under control.
Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo when contacted said his party expected congestion to continue until the evening and that traffic conditions were being actively monitored by officers on duty from time to time. — Bernama

A networking session drew interest from Malaysian tour agencies looking to expand outbound packages beyond Taipei and Kaohsiung. There were also Muslim-friendly itineraries and regional Taiwan Pass promotions. Attractions travellers can look forward to include cloud-watching at Zhushan, stargazing at Ciyun Temple, traditional woodcraft villages and visits to tea plantations. Management of Alishan National Scenic Area, Taiwan's tourism administration of the transport ministry director Huang Yi-Ping said the event showcased the area's signature experiences, with partners Tea3Gen, Taiping Suspension Bridge, Long Yun Farm and iWander Travel. 'Malaysia is Taiwan's third-largest South-East Asian market. We aim to position Alishan as a world-class forest tourism brand,' he said. Jaden Teng Ya Yuan from Long Yun Leisure Farm said they held halal certification, making it a welcome option for Muslim travellers. Taiwan tourism administration recreation section chief Kuo Tzu-Yu said Alishan ranked 19th on The New York Times' 2025 list of '52 Places to Go'. It was the only destination in the country to make the list. 'An incentive programme has been launched to attract international tourists, with eligible travellers receiving spending credits until September. 'A post-September policy is in the works,' she added.

Tourist safety in Sabah needs urgent fix, says Tiong King Sing after uncovering serious enforcement lapses
SIBU, Aug 17 — Immediate reforms are needed to safeguard tourist safety in Sabah, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. He advised Sabah authorities to step up the necessary actions to enhance the state's tourism image. 'Following a two-day joint sea and land enforcement operation, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture held a meeting with the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and relevant enforcement agencies to address tourism safety issues, illegal operations and enforcement in Sabah. 'In that meeting, I raised several serious weaknesses regarding tourism safety in Sabah, where the safety of tourists is seen as insufficiently protected,' he said in a statement. According to him, statistics showed between 2023 and July 2025, Sabah recorded several tourism-related accidents that caused multiple deaths and injuries. 'In 2023 alone, there were 14 incidents resulting in six deaths and nine injuries; in 2024, 11 incidents with nine deaths and 28 injuries; while in 2025, up to July, there were 23 incidents with two deaths and two injuries. 'These frequent accidents highlight weak safety management and regulatory oversight, which undermine travellers' confidence and damage Sabah's international tourism reputation,' he said. Tiong said during the two-day operation, he personally led officers from the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division and Immigration Department, police and other agencies on inspections around Tawau. He said the operation revealed widespread illegal practices, including overloaded tour buses without tour guides; foreigners renting local licences and operating behind the scenes; foreign divers working illegally; non-tourism vehicles carrying passengers; and boats operating with approval. Other issues included alleged corruption in the Immigration Department, lax monitoring of resorts and homestays without insurance protection and unauthorised fee collection on certain islands. — The Borneo Post

Pesona Anggerik at Gardens by the Bay marks 60 years of Malaysia-Singapore ties
SINGAPORE (Bernama): More than 600 orchids will be showcased amidst a vibrant tapestry of Malaysian architecture, intricate handicrafts, and traditional attire at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay until Sept 7, in celebration of 60 years of Malaysia-Singapore diplomatic ties. Presented in collaboration with the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore, Pesona Anggerik: Truly Asia Orchids features over 15 genera of orchids, along with authentic crafts and artefacts such as Kelantan's moon kite, Pahang textiles, Sabah's woven baskets and tribal headwear, and Sarawak's traditional Orang Ulu attire. Gardens by the Bay chief executive officer Felix Loh said one of the highlights includes the lady's slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum Maudiae), a hybrid descended from species native to northern Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, known for its distinctive slipper-shaped pouch. "Treasured for its mottled foliage and striking green or burgundy blooms, it reflects the richness of Malaysia's botanical heritage. "Equally precious are the traditional crafts and artefacts sourced by the Malaysian High Commission from across the country, which add cultural depth to this display,' he said at the launch on Friday. High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore, Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, said the event commemorates the strong and enduring relationship between the two neighbouring countries, which have stood side by side through times of change and challenge.
