Three men are finally to be charged over the horror machete attack in which a 14-year-old girl was repeatedly slashed as she shielded her one-year-old nephew's body from the blades of their attackers.
Nearly six years after the video-taped attack in Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, shocked the nation, the Sunday World has learned that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in Northern Ireland has decided on the charges that are to be brought against the Athlone based trio.
A document seen by this newspaper confirms the CPS issued its decision to bring prosecutions against the three men on February 5 this year.
It's understood a European Arrest Warrant may be sought as the men are not resident in Northern Ireland.
The Sunday World is aware of the identities of the trio but, for legal reasons, they cannot be disclosed at this time.

All three are to be charged that on November 16, 2019, each unlawfully and maliciously wounded Geraldine Maughan with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessed offensive weapons namely a machete, and maliciously attempted to cause grievous bodily harm to John Joyce.
In a statement to the Sunday World, issued on Wednesday, a PSNI spokesperson said: 'We are working alongside the Public Prosecution Service on this case and the investigation is ongoing.'
During the horror attack, baby John's aunt Geraldine was sliced open six times as she used her body to shield her godson.
His grandmother Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Joyce was also treated for leg wounds.
Police believe the men who burst into their home were searching for baby John's grandfather David 'Gramsey' Joyce.
Gramsey, who has a fearsome reputation as a bare-knuckle boxer, was in a house nearby and raced to his family's aid after hearing the screams but the attackers had fled.
Horrifically, the attack was taped on a mobile phone by one of the thugs present and later sent to Geraldine as she recovered from her injuries in hospital.
Geraldine later told the Sunday World how she believed she was going to die after her lung was cut open during the vile attack.

But she said: 'He's my godson and I love him. I couldn't let them hurt him even though they were hitting me.'
Geraldine also recalled how, as the blows from the machete rained down on her, she 'looked up over my shoulder and I could see one of the men standing over me'.
'I was screaming for help,' she added. 'And then he started laughing at me, laughing like the devil, and he just wouldn't stop.
'I thought they were going to kill me and then they were going to kill baby John and then my cousin.'

Dublin woman tore out supermarket worker's hair over Facebook post

The victim had posted information about a member of Robyn Barnwell's family who was married to a man who had been sentenced for a serious crime A mother of one pulled a clump of hair out of a woman's head over a Facebook post in a row described by her defence as a 'cautionary tale on the dangers of social media'. Robyn Barnwell (25) went to the woman's workplace in a Dublin supermarket and attacked her after the victim posted an 'inflammatory' message that she believed put a member of her family in danger. Adjourning the case, Judge Treasa Kelly said she would consider applying the Probation Act if Barnwell paid €1,500 in compensation. The judge acknowledged that the accused had got 'carried away in the heat of the moment', but said that it was 'totally unacceptable behaviour in a civilised society'. Barnwell, a commercial painter and 'talented footballer', of Raheen Park, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. Dublin District Court heard the accused went to Aldi, Kylemore Road on August 2 last year, punched the woman in the face several times and pulled a clump of hair from her head. Barnwell had no previous convictions. The court heard the victim had posted information on Facebook about a member of Barnwell's family who was married to a man who had been sentenced for a serious crime. The accused felt this was 'opportunistic' as it was none of the woman's business and it put her relative, who was 'blameless', in danger. 'She appears to have put this post up because she doesn't like the Barnwell family,' defence solicitor Lorraine Stephens said. Robyn Barnwell pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. Photo: Paddy Cummins The accused knew where the woman was working and went to 'have a discussion with her' but emotions were running high, and there was a verbal altercation that turned physical. 'She accepts she should never have gone to [the victim's] place of business, it was the wrong behaviour for the right reason, she deeply regrets it,' Ms Stephens said. There was an 'element of provocation' due to the inflammatory language used on the Facebook post and it was a 'cautionary tale of the dangers of social media', Ms Stephens said. There was 'bad blood' behind the case and the incident was an 'isolated incident provoked by emotional distress'. Robyn Barnwell pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to access the site due to a locked gate. The Sunday World understands the mast failed to ignite fully. Police officers at the scene removed material from the interior of the mast that was used, in an attempt to start the blaze. The 17 previous attacks A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: 'Firefighters used a CO2 extinguisher to extinguish the fire and the scene was handed over to the PSNI. 'The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate ignition and the incident was dealt with by 1.07am.' A PSNI spokesperson said: 'Some damage was caused to electronics in a nearby building and we're treating the fire as deliberate, with our enquiries into the matter ongoing. 'We understand the concerns regarding the recent series of attacks on 5G masts in the west Belfast area and the significant disruption these incidents are causing across the community, impacting both businesses and local residents. "We're also keen to speak with anyone who might have CCTV or other footage that could assist with our enquiries. The overnight incident brings the total number of masts destroyed since January 2023 to 18. Earlier this week the Sunday World reported that a group calling itself 'Anarchy 61' have claimed responsibility for the most recent attacks. The value of each mast ranges between £100k and £200k meaning the cost of the damage to date could be as high as £3.4m. In a statement Mobile UK, the umbrella organisation of the UK's main network providers, said the time for condemnation of such incidents has long passed, with providers now seeking what they say will be 'a crucial intervention' from Stormont to help stop the attacks and ensure seamless network coverage for all, across Northern Ireland.
