'Incredible' period drama 'just like Downton Abbey' you can now stream
The six-part period drama series from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video UK now
Julian Fellowes seemingly can't stay away from the allure of period dramas. The mind behind Downton Abbey, Gosford Park, The English Game, and The Gilded Age now graces us with another historical series - Belgravia.
Belgravia unfurls in the 19th century and takes its initial bow at an event that is engraved in history - the Duchess of Richmond's ball of June 1815, a notable affair just days before the Battle of Waterloo. Centring on the intrigues of the Trenchard and Bellasis families, the show dives headfirst into familiar territory for devotees of period drama, complete with clandestine scandals, high-society relationships, and the intricate dance of class politics.
Under John Alexander's direction and sprung from the imagination of Julian Fellowes, Belgravia is crafted from Julian's own 2016 novel of the same name and reunites the production crew that brought Downton Abbey to life, reports the Mirror US. Regarded by many as the undisputed monarch of the period piece, Julian's work inevitably draws comparisons to his giant success with Downtown Abbey.
Sharing his thoughts with Town and Country, Julian said: "I think [Belgravia] it's darker than Downton. The servants are working people; they're doing their jobs because those are the jobs that were available. It's not sentimental. It's a sharper world."
The limited series initially debuted on ITV in the UK on March 15, 2020, followed by its release in the US on Epix on April 12, 2020. After its release, a sequel, titled Belgravia: The Next Chapter, was promptly commissioned and announced in September 2022, with Helen Edmundson on board as its writer and developer.
The show premiered on ITV in January 2024. A blend of new and returning faces comprised the cast of Belgravia, including Alice Eve, Ella Purnell, Tamsin Greig, Richard Goulding, Emily Reid, Tom Wilkinson, Harriet Walter, Philip Glenister, and Tara Fitzgerald.
Upon its release, reviews were rather mixed. One said: "Belgravia has all the touchstones of a bodice-ripper.
"Great romance and thrilling revenge. And the usual coterie of leaching and sneering in-laws." However, others expressed differing sentiments, such as this critic, who mentioned, "Though billed as a showcase for state-of-the-art costume drama, the six-part bonnet-fest feels more like a one-stop shop for all the worst excesses and boredoms of a genre that has outlived its usefulness."
By contrast, another critic observed: "Belgravia is gorgeously appointed, it's romantic enough, it's grounded in the manners of a far more delicate time when everyone stood six-feet apart lest they bump hands." Additionally, a reviewer shared that while Belgravia veered off course, it remained captivating due to its intricate visuals: "Belgravia errs on the wrong side of that divide, but it is so well-appointed that it is never less than beautiful to watch, just like 'Downton'.
"For some, the finery will win out over refinement." Audience feedback leaned towards the positive, with one viewer writing: "Incredible show!
"Nothing was obvious, it kept the audience in suspense until the very last minute. Loved the complexity of the characters, the authenticity of the costumes and overall atmosphere. Highly recommend!".
Another chimed in with: "Wonderful series! ! The storyline is gripping from the very first episode.
"There is no woke political ideology that spoils so many films and series these days. Brilliant, authentic acting and casting in the excellent period production.
"So many movies and series try and fail to promote female empowerment; however, Belgravia delivers this message superbly."

Comedian Lee Mack returns to present the show but this time he'll be joined by 100 celebrities and sports stars. They will be put to the test in the quiz where 'the questions have nothing to do with remembering facts, but are all about logic and common sense', explains the Radio Times. The aim will be to make it to the end, answering the 1% question correctly to take home up to £100,000 for charity. How does The 1% Club work? ITV said: 'Find out how clever you are as Lee Mack presents the quiz where it doesn't matter how good you are at quizzes and where 100 contestants could win up to 100,000 pounds.' Each player gets one pass which they can use to help them skip a question but once they have used it, an incorrect answer takes them out of the game. If they make it to the 1% question, they will be asked to go down to the stage for the final question where they'll see if they are winners. Who will be on The 1% Club for Soccer Aid? While a full lineup hasn't been revealed by ITV, some promotions for the show have seen a few famous faces preparing for their stint. Among those famous faces are comedian Paddy McGuinness, rapper Aitch and Love Island narrator Iain Stirling. Brother and sister presenting duo Scarlette and Stuart Douglas will go up against each other in the quiz with Stuart saying he hopes to do better than his sister. James Martin announces Saturday Morning break as he makes exciting summer plans
James Martin bid his Saturday Morning viewers a fond farewell as the show is being taken off the air for the summer - and he did not explain exactly when the show will be back James Martin has revealed he is shunning exotic holidays and choosing to relax in the UK as his Saturday Morning TV show is paused for the summer. The 52-year-old TV chef took to the air for a final time this weekend ahead of an extended break. The star has been hosting ITV's James Martin's Saturday Morning since 2017 - but fans will have to go for several weeks without seeing him on screens. On Saturday, the host explained that his show is being put on ice for the summer. He did not give an explicit time or date that the long-running series would return - but did shed light on what he would be doing in the interim. After thanking his guests and co-stars, he engaged in some banter with his crew. When the episode came to an end, James announced: "That is also for the series. Me and the crew are heading off on sunny holidays. Different climates." Turning to his team, he asked: "Where are you going?" A crew member could be heard replying that they would be going to Portugal - leading James to reveal he was looking forward to a staycation rather than jetting off to the sun. He revealed: "Yorkshire for me." Saturday's episode brought to a close the current season of the show - which was forced to be shorter than usual due to a conflicting event. He told fans: "Because of the Derby on ITV1 this afternoon, it is a shorter episode than usual today. But we still have time for one more dish." When the episode ended, he made sure to explain that he was grateful to his guests, crew and viewers for making his show a continued success. He said: "That's all we have got time for today, a massive thank you to all of my guests." He continued: "To my food team, you can sleep better now. Daniel and Sally, and of course, Harry Redknapp and Carly Paoli." James later teased when his show would be back on the air - but did not commit to an exact date. He said: "We will be back here with more top chefs, other brilliant guests, and more delicious recipes later on in the year." And signing off, he told viewers: "Until then, thanks for watching. Have a wonderful, fantastic summer. I'll see you out there wherever you are. Thanks for watching, see you again soon, goodbye for now." ITV has been making headlines in recent weeks over the brutal changes they have been making behind-the-scenes, reportedly leading to staff redundancies and even reports Lorraine Kelly is considering quitting the network after her number of shows per year was cut in half and her time slot hugely reduced. ITV revealed last month: "From January 2026, Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily, and will transfer to be produced by ITV News at ITN at their base at Gray's Inn Road in London. GMB will be made by a dedicated team within ITV News at ITN. "This change will see ITV bring all its national news gathering into one hub, with Good Morning Britain benefitting from the journalistic and production resources already in place for national news bulletins, for the website and for digital platforms including ITVX." It was added: "Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will continue to be produced by ITV Studios and will be broadcast from a new location in central London." Drastic changes have not yet been made for weekend scheduling.
