As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-delayed Yellow Line of Namma Metro on August 10, commuters say the launch appears symbolic, with limited benefits for daily travellers owing to inadequate trains.
The 19.15-km stretch, connecting R.V. Road and Bommasandra in South Bengaluru, will see trains running only every 25 minutes initially, a gap that many say will make the service nearly unusable during peak hours.
'I was hopeful that once the Yellow Line opened, I could stop depending on my bike to commute to Electronics City. But with trains every 25 minutes and the expected crowd, this is going to be a nightmare,' said Murlidhar K.M., a resident of BTM Layout.
Kavya Kumari, who lives near Bommanahalli, said: 'This looks like another case of ribbon-cutting culture. If the full-fledged service won't start until next year, what is the use? Public transport should prioritise public need, not political events.'
On Sunday, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced the opening on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the ₹5,056.99-crore project, with 16 stations, is ready for launch. The line is seen as a critical link for thousands of tech workers and residents along Hosur Road, BTM Layout, Silk Board, and Electronics City.
Shortage of trains
However, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials admitted that the line will not operate at full capacity immediately owing to a shortage of trains. Only three train sets have arrived so far, and a fourth is undergoing trials at Titagarh in West Bengal, and it is expected to arrive in Bengaluru by August 12.
'Ridership is expected to be low in the initial days. We hope to gradually increase the frequency and availability of trains. Once full-fledged operations begin, likely only by next year with 15 trains, we anticipate a ridership of at least 2 lakh passengers daily. The fourth train, once it arrives at the depot, will also have to undergo several tests. After around 15 days, we expect to induct it into service. In the following months, more trains will be added to the Yellow Line, and the current 25-minute gap between trains will be reduced,' a BMRCL official said.
The line has been under construction since 2017 and has suffered multiple delays. Civil works, originally slated for completion by early 2023, were completed only in 2024, largely owing to delays in the delivery of rolling stock.
In 2019, BMRCL awarded a ₹1,578-crore contract to Chinese firm CRRC to supply 216 coaches and build a local manufacturing facility. But CRRC failed to meet its contractual obligations, causing major delays. BMRCL had to consider invoking a ₹372-crore bank guarantee.
To revive the situation, CRRC partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems, which eventually resumed deliveries though far slower than scheduled.

NEW DELHI: The Union government has signaled its unwillingness to allow a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, with Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh invoking a 1988 ruling by former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar to reject the Opposition's demand. On Tuesday, Harivansh cited Jakhar's December 1988 decision, which barred parliamentary discussion on the functioning or decisions of the Election Commission (EC), stating that the autonomous body's actions cannot be scrutinized in the House. 'You know that I cannot comment upon the actions and decisions of the EC, which is an autonomous body. Never before have I done it, nor will I do it now. Unless you amend the Constitution and bring the EC under parliamentary purview, we cannot discuss its decisions,' Harivansh said, quoting Jakhar's ruling. The Deputy Chairman's remarks came as he dismissed 34 notices submitted by Opposition MPs, most seeking the suspension of business under Rule 267 to urgently debate the SIR in Bihar and other states. Harivansh cited procedural flaws, including incorrect formatting, the sub judice nature of some matters, and the absence of precedent for such discussions. He expressed concern over the frequent misuse of Rule 267, meant for 'rarest of rare' cases, noting that most notices lacked proper citations or pertained to issues outside Parliament's jurisdiction. 'Despite clear rules, some members are using Rule 267 casually, disrupting proceedings when their notices are disallowed,' he said. Highlighting historical data, Harivansh pointed out that very few such notices had been accepted—none between 2000–2004, only four from 2004–2009, one out of 491 during 2009–2014, and just six out of 3,152 between 2014 and the 2025 Budget Session.

Going beyond politics, Karnataka and the Union government should work together to improve Bengaluru's infrastructure, urged Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology. He was delivering a virtual keynote address at the opening of SAP Labs' largest campus in India at Devanahalli here on Tuesday. He said the Union government was committed to working with the State government, despite political differences, to improve the infrastructure condition of the city. Rail connectivity The Minister further said that the government was keen to improve the transportation facility within the city and outside the city. 'We are planning to double the rail connectivity within the city and to the city from outside in the next three years,' he said. Earlier, inaugurating SAP Labs India Innovation Park, on 41 acres of land at Devanahalli, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, 'Both Airport Metro line and suburban rail were being fast tracked to be ready by 2029. He said he was committed to balancing, decentralising, and sustainable growth beyond the core of Bengaluru.' He said that his government was happy to partner with SAP Labs in areas like digital governance, smart cities, skilling, and sustainability to empower MSMEs, and enhance government services in the State. The new SAP facility represented the global enterprise's deep trust in Karnataka's capability, the Chief Minister said. Since 1998, SAP Labs India, headquartered in Bengaluru, has grown to become SAP's largest R&D facility outside Germany. 'As we advance in clean energy, sustainable mobility, and eco-conscious growth, investments like this demonstrate how economic progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,' Mr. Siddaramaiah said. On education and skill development, he said, with an ambitious ₹2,500-crore programme supported by the World Bank, his government was strengthening first-grade colleges, establishing a Centre of Excellence, and enhancing R&D capabilities to build a skilled, future-ready workforce aligned with the demands of advanced technologies. Sindhu Gangadharan, managing director, SAP Labs India and head of customer innovation services, SAP said, 'India's rise as a global technology powerhouse is not just a story of scale — it's a story of ingenuity, resilience, and relentless innovation.' In the first ceasefire violation since Operation Sindoor in May, Pakistan army on Tuesday (August 5,. 2025) evening indulged in "unprovoked" firing on forward Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said. The Indian Army strongly retaliated and the exchange of small arms firing between the two sides continued for nearly 15 minutes in the Mankote sector, they said. There was no immediate report of any casualty, the officials said, adding security forces have been put on high alert all along the border in view of the ceasefire violation that coincided with the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to the erstwhile State of J&K, and its bifurcation into two Union territories. The sources said that the firing from across the border started at 7.40 PM on forward posts and the Indian troops retaliated befittingly. Indian and Pakistani militaries engaged in intense clashes between May 7 and 10 after India launched missile strikes targeting terror infrastructure across the border to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack. The border clashes, however, died down after the two countries reached an understanding. At least 28 persons were killed in Pakistani shelling, missile and drone attacks along the LoC in J&K with 13 of these deaths reported in Poonch district alone.
