How a new SIM card connects Chhattisgarh youth to Kohli, de Villiers, Rajat Patidar

Hindustan Times16 hours ago
Raipur: What if a new SIM card suddenly connected you to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and an IPL captain? That's exactly what happened to a young man from a remote Chhattisgarh village, who thought he'd just bought a routine SIM card—only to discover it once belonged to cricketer Rajat Patidar. What followed was a whirlwind of celebrity calls, confusion, and an unexpected brush with fame. At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal.
Manish Bisi, in his twenties, from Madagaon village in Gariaband district, purchased a SIM card on June 28 from a shop in Deobhog, around 8 kilometres from his village. His friend Khemraj, while helping him set up WhatsApp, noticed the display picture was of India cricketer Patidar, who had captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 IPL season.
At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal.
Thinking it to be a prank by friends, they even played along—until Patidar called him on July 15, requesting to return his SIM. In no time, a police team arrived at his doorstep.
Gariaband deputy superintendent of police Neha Sinha explained that the SIM had been deactivated after 90 days of inactivity and reassigned to a new customer, in line with telecom policy. 'Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back,' she said.
The Madhya Pradesh cyber cell contacted Gariaband police, who spoke with Manish and his family. With their consent, the SIM was recently returned to Patidar. 'There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part—it was simply a result of standard telecom procedures,' Sinha added.
For Manish, Khemraj, and their families, the incident has been nothing short of 'a dream.' Khemraj, an ardent Kohli fan, recalled Manish passing the phone to him. 'The callers, who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal, asked why we were using Patidar's number. We explained that we had bought a new SIM and this was our number.'
'Talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something we can't describe. Even if it happened because of a mix-up, we were lucky. People just dream of seeing them, but we got to speak to them,' said Manish's brother, Deshbandhu Bisi.

Cubbon Park Association moves HC over damages

Bengaluru: The Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) historic IPL trophy win was celebrated in grand style on the steps of Vidhana Soudha, where the state government felicitated the players. Thousands of fans thronged the venue, with many even climbing trees in Cubbon Park to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes. However, the celebrations have now led to legal trouble. The Cubbon Park Association has alleged that the massive crowd caused significant damage to the park's plants, trees, and landscaped lawns, resulting in losses worth crores of rupees. The association claims that the lawns, laid at huge expense by the Horticulture Department, were trampled during the event. According to the association, the state government and event organisers had been warned beforehand that RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) would be held responsible for any damage to the park. Now, following the reported destruction, the association has approached the Karnataka High Court with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking full compensation from RCB and KSCA for the losses. The PIL marks yet another setback for RCB and KSCA, who are already facing criticism and scrutiny over crowd mismanagement. The association's move adds to the growing list of issues arising from the IPL victory celebrations. The controversy comes in the wake of the tragic June 4 incident near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, when a stampede during RCB's celebrations claimed 11 lives. That tragedy prompted an inquiry led by retired judge Michael D. Cunha, whose report has already highlighted serious lapses in crowd control. Now, with the Cubbon Park Association's demand for damages, both RCB and KSCA will have to respond to mounting legal and public pressure.

Virat Kohli Said "Why Are You...": Chhattisgarh Villager On Rajat Patidar SIM Mishap

For Manish Bisi, a young man from Madagaon village in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district, the simple act of buying a SIM card from a local mobile phone shop let loose a whirlwind of disbelief, celebrity, and a bizarre series of events that felt more like a movie script than reality. The SIM card once belonged to rising cricket star Rajat Patidar, and soon an awestruck Bisi was fielding calls from legends like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. What Manish and his friend, Khemraj, thought was a system glitch when they saw the profile picture of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Patidar after they installed WhatsApp soon turned as real as voices on the other end of the phone line. The tryst with instant fame for Manish, son of farmer Gajendra Bisi, began on June 28 when he purchased a new Jio SIM from a mobile shop in Deobhog, around 8 kilometres from his village. Manish and Khemraj were soon sucked into a world of disbelief as callers identified themselves as Kohli, de Villiers and Yash Dayal, though the two tried to remain grounded in reality thinking these were all part of some elaborate prank by friends. In fact, the duo even played along, Khemraj claimed. The story turned on its head when, on July 15, Patidar himself called up with a fervent "brother, please return my SIM". Manish and Khemraj still believed it was a prank before realising the seriousness in Patidar's tone when he spoke about sending police to solve the matter. A police team arrived some minutes later, putting a lid on any assumptions that it was a prank. Gariaband Deputy Superintendent of Police Neha Sinha said the SIM had been deactivated as per telecom policy after 90 days of inactivity and was reassigned to a new customer, which in this case happened to be Manish. "Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back," she said. The MP Cyber Cell contacted Gariaband police, who spoke with Manish and his family and with their consent, the SIM was recently returned to Patidar, the Deputy SP informed. "There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part. This was simply a result of standard telecom procedures," Sinha added. For Manish, Khemraj, and their families, meanwhile, the experience has been like "something out of a film". Khemraj, an ardent Kohli fan, excitedly said, "I never imagined I would speak to Virat Kohli one day, and that too from our village. When AB de Villiers called, he spoke in English. We couldn't understand a word, but we were so thrilled." "When Manish used to get calls, he would hand over the phone to me. The callers who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal asked us why we were using Patidar's number. We explained to them we had bought a new SIM and this is our number," Khemraj added. The villagers are overjoyed because most people here are RCB fans and talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something that cannot be described and even now seems like a dream, said Manish's brother Deshbandhu Bisi. "Even if it was all due to a mix-up, these conversations happened out of sheer luck. People just dream of seeing them, we got to speak to them," Deshbandhu gushed.

Fake IAS officer held for jobs scam in Gurgaon; police seize forged ID cards, arms licence, car with govt marking

The Gurgaon police Friday arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly posing as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and extorting money by promising jobs and facilitating transfers. On Friday, acting on a tip-off, a team from the Palam Vihar police station raided a rented house where Pathak was staying. As the police approached, Pathak attempted to flee to the rooftop, but the police nabbed him. 'A search led to the recovery of incriminating items, including two ID cards, one ID card lanyard marked 'Ministry of Home Affairs', an envelope related to a fake transfer order, a forged arms licence, six mobile phones, a laptop, a walkie-talkie set, an Ayushman card, three Aadhaar cards, an ATM card, a PAN card, a passport, two stamps, a red and blue beacon light, Rs 2.5 lakh in cash, and a car with 'Government of India' written on it,' a police spokesperson said Sunday evening. The police Saturday produced Pathak before a court which remanded him in two days of police custody for further interrogation. 'During questioning, Pathak confessed to posing as an IAS officer from the Ministry of Home Affairs, deceiving people by promising government jobs and employee transfers to extort money, which he used to fund his and his family's expenses,' the spokesperson added. The police said a background check revealed that Pathak has a prior criminal record, with a case registered against him in Uttar Pradesh for similar fraudulent activities. 'The investigation is ongoing, with police probing other potential crimes linked to the accused,' said the spokesperson. In May, the cybercrime police in Haryana's Nuh arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Army officer and duped people. Interrogations in that case had revealed that the accused allegedly used WhatsApp, posing as an Army officer with fake profiles, to deceive victims.
